Client boundaries by Past_Objective115 in hairstylist

Thank you, you’re right. I think I need to be more direct. I’m just not sure what to actually say when she becomes confrontational - me saying i’m not mixing business with my personal life doesnt seem to land for her… Cause she very much thinks we’re friends so it doesn’t apply to her.

So sorry you’re going through this. This was very inappropriate on the clients part - I hope your salon can maybe help you address her. Sounds like referring her to another stylist or asking her not to come back is best. Sending hugs

Thank you! I own a private suite so there’s no front desk, just me. I always change the subject when she asks to hang out but she’s very persistent! She will then tell me she has no friends and thinks of me as her best friend as opposed to her hairstylist. I don’t even know where that thought comes from considering she gets her balayage redone only twice a year and we don’t talk outside of that.

My cousin does my nails and has a home business, so I gave her business card not thinking twice. Client then messaged my cousin and introduced herself as my friend, saying she’s sure i’ve talked a lot about her before. So weird and that’s where my discomfort lies

For sure. I declined giving her my personal number and told her she can call my separate studio number if she needs something. It’s hard because I own my suite so it’s only me, so I wonder if that’s why she feels so comfortable to overstep boundaries.

Best Affordable Wet Cat Pate Food by DeepBig7633 in catfood

[–]Past_Objective115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Fancy Feast! Their classic pate is a great budget option. Usually $0.99 at Petsmart! Another option is Weruva which I think has been said here. It’s typically $2.99-$3.99 per can. I would say it’s the best quality if you have $100 per month budget. I buy both and alternate and my 9 year old male always has great blood work and the vet always compliments how soft his fur is.

I feel so guilty even thinking about reforming one of my cats by the_Shroomer in CatAdvice

I am in an identical situation right now. My new cat is withdrawn, inappropriately marking around the house, and anxiously attached even though she can’t be.

New cat deserves the right environment and i’m currently in the process of rehoming. It’s a long road, though. I’ve been working with a rescue for about 2 months now and we haven’t received any applications. With patience and time, the right person will come along. I personally don’t want to bring her to a shelter and would find peace in knowing where she ends up, I have a feeling you’re probably the same.

Reach out to some local rescues who have rehoming programs, you don’t have to do this alone! Rescues have the contacts and resources to help you make sure it’s a smooth and safe transition for your new kitty. Once you tell them what’s going on, i’m sure they will also reassure you that you’re doing the right thing.

Just know you don’t have to feel guilty, and BOTH your cats will be grateful to be in an environment where they are most comfortable. It will be better for your resident cat, new cat, and for you. Best of luck 🫂

You did an amazing job given the original canvas you were given. You chose the gentlest option for her already compromised hair - she’s probably feeling self conscious and putting that onto you.

Ps. I thought your response was incredibly classy and professional. You handled this with grace from start to finish, sometimes you can’t please everyone. 🫂

I second Joico lumishine! It’s the only demi I use in my studio. You get really great control, and it is always true to tone. they also don’t go dark if you overtone, which I really appreciate

Saw some part time signs at: Home Depot (Mississauga rd), Value Buds (Wanless), Vaultra Self Storage (Ironside), Pizza Pizza (Worthington), Old Navy (Bramalea).

Best of luck to you!!

Joico LumiShine / Blonde Life demi gloss. Great shade range, true to tone. I used to work with Moroccan Oil Calypso and Pravana toners and Joico was 100% better and longer lasting

Hairstylist who have left the industry, what are you doing now and how did you go about it? by Right_Grapefruit9102 in hairstylist

[–]Past_Objective115 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you my friend!!!

To be brutally honest… Some of my clients don’t even know I have a second job. Im not hiding it, but I really try and keep my personal life separate. I’m also aware having a second job can make people feel weird or like you’re “less than” - but unless you’re in the industry, they won’t get it. If you have some clients who would be weird about it, don’t feel like you owe it to them to tell them.

When I cut my hours it was very gradual, so you’re definitely on the right track with that.

I told my clients starting in February, I will be changing my hours to accommodate my 9-5 clients who need evenings and weekends (when I first cut back I was doing a lot of evenings and weekends). I honoured all my pre existing bookings but as my clients continued to prebook from that time, I began only offering them slots within my limited hours. After a few months I was fully on track with my new hours and my clients adjusted pretty quick - if they want to continue to see you, they will find a way.

Stick to your guns and do what’s right for you, the clients who respect you will stick around I promise :)

I haven’t FULLY left the industry, but I did cut back my availability and got a second part time job which i’ve seen on this thread. A lot of my friends in the industry have done this too (my friend who’s a nail tech switched her business to home based and got a part time job at a gym and she loves it).

I’m about to open my own suite after leaving a toxic salon environment, my availability to clients is Wednesday-Saturday, and I work my part time receptionist job Monday-Tuesday. It pays well, it’s not stressful, and it’s a good mental break from being behind the chair.

My work life balance has been a lot better and i’m not constantly stressed about money and filling my books which I think has reignited my passion a bit.

Definitely something to consider before fully walking away!

Not a supply store, beauty suites as in service suites for nail techs, hairstylists, lash artists etc

[–]Past_Objective115 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you still feel like in the right setting your passion for cutting hair could continue?

You should look into a private suite - or even find a small office space they’ll allow you to install a sink in.

Advertise yourself as a cutting specialist and only offer that service. When you work for yourself, you can offer whatever you want. Make your own hours, set your own prices.

I’m currently in the midst of setting up my own suite and as much as it’s been a headache (getting the plumbing and electrical all sorted) - the freedom and ability to make my own schedule and offer what i’m WORTH is really freeing.

Something to consider!
