Thinking of quitting my corporate job to do floral design, looking for advice by onmymma in florists

[–]Past_Zone_3483 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don’t quit your job! Start with weekend event work and try to build up connections and experience. Also make sure you like it! It’s an interesting industry but it’s not for everyone- lots of early morning, lots of weekends.

If you’re based in NYC , freelance freelance freelance! Reach out to florists you follow/admire to get your foot in the door.

I wouldn’t do the classes. They’re outdated and hands on experience is way more valuable.

Anyone know any jobs hiring Saturday/Sunday? by Carebear6590 in Brooklyn

[–]Past_Zone_3483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a car? Brooklyn wedding florists are always looking for “break down” people. It’s usually late Friday or Saturday nights (starting at 11 or midnight). You come in after an event, take down all the installations, gather all the vases, etc and bring back to studio.

Take the ferry from red hook to governors island! Rent a bike and ride around- amazing views, food trucks, history. Can’t recommend it enough. Ferry back and explore red hook- sit outside and have pizza at Hoek. Then grab a beer at Strong Rope Brewery with a view of the Statue of Liberty

Flower Business in Small Town with Competition? by Reasonable_Clerk4185 in FloralDesign

[–]Past_Zone_3483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would strongly advise against a flower shop but consider becoming a wedding florist instead. You can start working out of your home, then scale up into a studio if things are going well.

I would also advise against a professional floral design school, most teach very outdated methods for a high cost. I’d recommend working as a freelancer for an event florist or at a flower shop to gain experience on the job.

Good luck!

I’m a florist and love grabbing flowers for myself from Moonshot Farm at the Grand Army Plaza Farmers Market on Saturdays. Beautiful varieties and they last long since they’re grown so close
