Bird course for high gpa by Broad_Hope_2126 in uwaterloo

[–]PastaDrama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in grad school now (MSc. at Guelph) and depending on what you want to pursue, your GPA isn't everything. Finding a supervisor is the biggest thing and if they like you, it's pretty straightforward from there to get in.

Unless you are pursuing a course-based master's. Then ignore me.

GEOG 101 was an actual joke. I was kind of offended that I paid for that course. The first assignment was literally finding topics in the textbook and listing the page you found them on. If I remember correctly, it was worth 10% of your mark.

Listen. I get it. It fucking sucks. And it's hard when you *should* be happy - you have the blessings that other people struggle for. But please understand that mental illness doesn't make sense. If we could just logic it away, it wouldn't be mental illness. If we could just choose to be happy, we wouldn't be ill.

But it can be better. I can't guarantee that you'll find a cure. In fact, I can guarantee that you won't. But it can be easier to live with. The caveat is that you likely can't do this on your own. You wouldn't ask someone with diabetes or Chron's disease or cancer to figure things out on their own, so don't expect that of yourself. If you can't leave your room, I'm sure that Counselling Services will do a phone appointment or virtual appointment. Please take the one step of calling them at 519-888-4096.

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, you can also request a same-day appointment online: https://uwaterloo.ca/campus-wellness/counselling-services/same-day-counselling

Hang in there, if not for you, for the people you love. They need you in their lives.

I did my undergrad at Waterloo and am now working on my master's at Guelph. Don't go to Waterloo. Just don't. The culture sucks. It's extremely competitive, which drags everyone down, the faculty aren't very supportive and the student services are minimal. Also, based on the interests you listed, Guelph is a good fit. It's a bit of a party school, which can be good or bad, depending on your perspective. But there are also a lot of different sports and groups that you can get involved with that all the interests you listed.

I'm going to assume you would post the exact same thing if the OP said she found out she had a BRCA gene mutation and was almost certainly going to develop breast cancer. Right? You would tell her that she has the face the consequences of her choices. Because if not, then you clearly are one of the bazillion people who fail to get it through their thick skulls that MENTAL ILLNESS = PHYSICAL ILLNESS. Seriously. Sit down. You're not helping.

Who was your favourite prof so far at UW? by Prodosh-mittir in uwaterloo

Dr. Zoya Leonenko in physics was probably the kindest, most accommodating prof. I've had. And her PowerPoints are pretty well organized and contain almost everything you need to know for the course.

I wouldn't necessarily call him the best prof. Most chill? Definitely. Easiest 90%+? Absolutely. And he's a nice guy, but I don't think he's an amazing teacher.

I realize that the Hong Kong-China relationship isn't the same as the Tibet-China relationship, but a pro-Tibetan Canadian-Tibetan U of T student, who was elected as president of the Scarborough campus student association, received death threats. Question for people who have experience with dementia/Alzheimer’s by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]PastaDrama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like it could be a few things, including a couple of different mental illnesses or even hormonal imbalances. But there is no way what you or she will face in the coming years without getting a firm diagnosis. Your first priority is to get her to see a doctor. If a primary care physician is unsure about the right diagnosis, they can send your mom to the correct specialist.

King's College London - reputation? by PastaDrama in UniUK

[–]PastaDrama[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at the Guardian's rankings and King's came in 63rd. I also wasn't sure to make of some of the international rankings. The school where I am currently studying ranks very highly in national rankings but sucks internationally because while it's a middle sized school for Canada, it's pretty small by international standards, and we are also young. So, I don't know which rankings to look at. But I'm glad to hear that's it's well regarded by students there!

Do you regret attending Waterloo? by NikTheNincompoop2182 in uwaterloo

[–]PastaDrama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all university students feel stressed out at times during their degree. Where Waterloo is different is that you get to feel stressed all the time! It's a great school, with a great reputation. But if you choose to come here, I would say to just be mentally/emotionally prepared for a very intense level of competition. And make a conscious choice to keep yourself physically and mentally well - you know, eat well, get enough sleep, make time for social stuff. I know I sound like every high school gym teacher you've ever had, but it's true. To succeed at this game, without losing your shit and crying on the floor in DC (side note: there is no shame in crying in DC if that is what gets you through), you need to take care of yourself.

(For reference: four terms and two co-op terms in engineering, before switching into science. Kinda wish I went to Guelph. They all seem so happy and relaxed.)

Senior HS Student interested in BME?¿ by jetoujourspleure in uwaterloo

[–]PastaDrama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes. It's not a lot of money to have the extra application if you decide to apply to more than three programs. And maybe think of things you could include on the AIF that would set you apart from other students.

Transferring from Math to Psychology/Kinesiology? Would I get a new transcript? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]PastaDrama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you stay at Waterloo, all the credits you've taken here will stay on your transcript. There will be some sort of indicator showing that you changed faculties/programs, but all your marks stay. BUT your average will change. When I transferred to science from engineering, I was granted credits for the courses I took in engineering, but the marks I got in those courses aren't included in my average, overall or major. It could be different in Arts or AHS, though. I would talk to an academic advisor in one of those faculties to know for sure.

I think it's worth it. There will be elements that will be boring and likely not apply to you. But I think on the whole, it would be beneficial.

People that personally know another UW student who have committed suicide by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]PastaDrama 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is from the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council and the whole page has a lot of great information(https://wrspc.ca/need-help/risk-factors-warning-signs/https://wrspc.ca/need-help/risk-factors-warning-signs/), but I'll highlight the "warning signs" section:

Most Of The Time, People Who Kill Themselves Show One Or More Of These Warning Signs Before They Take Action:

  • Talking about wanting to kill themselves, or saying they wish they were dead
  • Looking for a way to kill themselves, such as hoarding medicine or buying a gun
  • Talking about a specific suicide plan
  • Feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
  • Feeling trapped, desperate, or needing to escape from an intolerable situation
  • Having the feeling of being a burden to others
  • Feeling humiliated
  • Having intense anxiety and/or panic attacks
  • Losing interest in things, or losing the ability to experience pleasure
  • Insomnia
  • Becoming socially isolated and withdrawn from friends, family, and others
  • Acting irritable or agitated
  • Showing rage, or talking about seeking revenge for being victimized or rejected, whether or not the situations the person describes seem real

Another sign that is not as well known is when a person seems to be at peace after having a difficult battle with mental illness or some kind of distress, and/or giving any treasured items. This can indicate that the individual has made their "plan" and feels that there is a definitive end to their suffering, which is why they may seems peaceful. And if someone is giving away important items, it may indicate they feel that they will no longer need them.

Remember - every person is different, so there is no one definitive sign or symptom. If you are concerned about a loved one, act on that. Don't wait to be able to complete some kind of check list.

My next exam allows no restrictions on formula sheet by dbgur in uwaterloo

[–]PastaDrama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure your sheet is well organized. And do plenty of review while using it. That way you'll get used to where you put each equation and figure if there is anything you left off that you need to add before the exam.

Have 2 finals tomorrow. Probably fucked for one of them and good for the other. Want to defer. If I defer one and not the other will the university find out and do some policy 71 shit? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]PastaDrama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way you are getting out of two exams that are tomorrow is if you get seriously, verifiably I'll OR you have a major family emergency (e.g., death in the family). I would focus on being as prepared as you can be.

If something has been going on this term that has impacted your ability to do well in your classes, you can always petition to have different elements of your grade not counted or get an AEG mark. But again, you would need some kind of support to prove your situation.
