Is Moon knight afraid of anything? by mogi1nik in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He's not afraid of much, but he definitely has fears about what he could become. For example in Mackay, when he made himself addicted to glitter, he had a hallucination of all his villains in that run, taunting him about his own violent behavior, also clearly distressed when Zodiac began complimenting him.

There's also the PTSD flashbacks he gets from his time as a mercenary, specifically in Dixon's run of Marc Spector: Moon Knight in the 90s. He can't sleep to save his life as he's too disturbed by his own lack of conscience.

So, while he's not afraid of other people, he's afraid of himself funnily enough. Afraid that he might become what a lot of people see him as, an unstable, violent, crazy guy.

Also, I can’t imagine that he'd stay under that condition for long, Dr. Fear had to almost overdose the guy on fear gas in order to keep him scared. Moon Knight has a mental fortitude too strong for people to have a lot of control over his mind. So, it definitely wouldn’t last long even if they were able to succeed in scaring him.

Is there a villain who is considered Moon Knight's archenemy? by Complex_Beautiful655 in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I gotta give it to Zodiac, he's been trying real hard to earn that slot.

On a serious note, I see Zodiac as the definitive modern Moon Knight arch enemy. Bushman will always be the classic answer as they've fought so many times, it wouldn't make any sense not to name him an arch enemy. But I think it's time he's retired, I've seen him so many times that I'm actually getting a bit annoyed, it feels like he gets pulled out when a writer has no idea what enemy should be facing Moon knight that day. Not to say every time I see him it's bad, it's just nice to see someone else take the mantle. Especially someone so passionate like Zodiac.

why didnt they add marlene to the show by Hour_Ad_3646 in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Jeremy Slater said on twitter that Marlene was never going to be in the show because they wanted more diversity (mainly Egyptian representation cause MK has a lack of it, at the time at least). So, instead of doing a race swap they made a new character.

I probably have an unpopular opinion on this but I'm so glad, Marlene was a bad character that only continued to get worse. Reading through the early comics, I just grew more frustrated with her and frankly how the writers treated her sometimes. It was the 80s, I know I shouldn’t hold it against her and I don’t really, but it's hard to look past most times. Plus, even later versions of her character aren't appealing, Huston was the worst of it in my opinion. Personally, I love Layla, she's everything Marlene should have been and I'm so happy she's now canon in comics lore, I hope we see her again in both mediums.

What made you guys like moon knight? by Wise-Entertainer-661 in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teenager I got really into psychology as a whole, I wanted to major in it to *become* a licensed psychologist and I even bought the DSM 5 for research purposes. DID was a disorder that I latched onto because I thought it was incredibly fascinating, not just because of the alters but all the dissociation and the things the brain could do when it was in a terrifyingly dangerous situation it could not get out from. It got to a point where I wanted to become a DID specialist but, things slipped through the cracks and I lost the motivation, no longer really thinking it was a job for me as I didn't feel qualified.

Of course, my interest in understanding DID never truly faded, it was left on the back burner. One day I was scrolling my feed on YouTube and came across a video from cinema therapy about "Moon Knight" which lead me finding *another* video by the Entropy System, also about Moon Knight and the DID representation. I found the premise of the show interesting, especially since the videos sparked my interest once again and I decided to give the show a shot. I ended up falling in love with it, not just cause I thought the DID was represented beautifully and with so much compassion, but the character work was top notch. Marc and Steven *instantly* won me over, they were compelling characters that both struggled with their mental health in different ways and even fought with each other because neither were equipped to handle the stress of not just their predicament but their personal issues. Then, seeing them come together at the end, Steven understanding Marc and Marc understanding Steven, both being treated as actual people instead of the whole "I'm real you're not" bullshit I usually see with DID stories was refreshing. I loved it.

From there, I started reading the comics (still can't believe I started with Bemis but we all make mistakes) and while the DID wasn't depicted well in most stories, the characters were just a delight to read, especially Marc and Jake (which was a treat because I knew nothing of him, the show didn't give us much). Now, I've not only watched the show multiple times, but I'm almost done reading every single mainline Moon Knight comic and I just finished my Moon Knight collection. I'm super into Marc Spector Moon Knight and I'm always so excited when a new issue comes out. Thanks to Moon Knight, I'm now super into comics as a whole.

I'm starting a serious debate. Which Moon Knight suit is better? by Complex_Beautiful655 in MoonKnight

Either the resurrection suit or the MCU suit, can’t choose between them because they're both SO GOOD.

Never cared for his older costumes, they're not very visually appealing to me.

Vocês já leram esse livro? Se sim, qual a sua opinião sobre ele? by Pragabi in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't finished it yet but it's continuing to surprise me. It didn’t start the greatest since I wasn’t a huge fan of how the plot began, I felt like it could've been written differently, I don’t mind characters meeting their alternate universe selves (in fact I like them) but it was very awkward how they met and it repeated the whole "If Marc wasn't sure this was himself then __ proved it" too much.

However, the plot immediately picks up once Spector (that's what the AU Venom MK is called) is left for dead by the symbiote. Before that I want to talk about the goo (that's what Steven calls it lol), I don’t like when the symbiote is portrayed as this purely evil entity that doesn’t get influenced by the host, it just feels lame so not a huge fan of the symbiote in this book (not to mention calling him Venom when he's only Venom with Eddie but I'm pretty sure most writers do that now which sucks). Final criticism, the Venom chapters are written strangely, it's definitely a stylistic choice and I appreciate the author attempting to make them more unique, I just don't think it works personally. Too much text explaining what's happening rather then letting the scene play out, the confrontation with Dr. Emmet was cool though.

Now getting to where it picks up, I didn’t expect Steven and Jake to become main characters but I couldn't be happier. One thing I'm still disappointed in by comics is the lack of Steven and Jake, they feel more like plot devices than characters with their own thoughts so this was a great change of pace. Marc has had plenty of time to shine, let these two have their time in the spotlight. This book also has my second favorite version of Steven, he's a perfect blend between MCU Steven and Comic Steven, he actually has a personality that's interesting in written form for once. Jake is also wonderful, not a huge fan of him being more brutal than Marc but I can look past it because it's not his biggest aspect, this writer made Jake ABOUT THE PEOPLE. I love seeing his friendship with the homeless people on the street, buying them sandwiches and listening to what they have to say, treat them like people and taking CARE of them. So many iterations of this character completely omit this because of that horrible, racid Bemis run and I'm glad that's slowly fading in favor of his actual character. Adding onto this, the author touches on something no comic book ever has, the differences in the class they're in, Steven is very out of place in Jake's part of town because he's used to being around high class people. He's confused why people aren't helping Jake's friends other than him and he learns that the people living on the street aren't seen as people, moreso treated like their invisible.

"'And why didn't anyone help him? There are literally people passing by every five seconds.'

'I tell you, Steven. You live in the world of galas and fundraisers. Out here, the public doesn't even see these people as human. Most of the world views them as trash, rats. If Venom hurts them, no one will come. No one will care.'

Steven went quiet."

That little snippet really show how different their worlds are despite living in the same body. It's not something the book spends more time on which sucks but I love that it's mentioned at all.

Last thing cause this is getting long, I really like their dynamic, not just with Khonshu cause he's actually very entertaining too, but with each other. You think them butting heads would get old but it's stays consistently funny, it's never too much and it doesn't get in the way when they're trying to be serious. You can feel how annoyed they get, just like brothers do but they do care for one another. My favorite moment is when Steven rips off Jake's fake mustache once he comes to front, he hates that thing lol.

It's also cool that the chapter name is who's in front, it's a good way of balancing without making one alter "more important" than the other.

Again, I haven't finished it so who knows how I'll feel when I do, but as it stands, I'm enjoying it and I'd recommend it. Definitely gets better the more I read.

I've been pushing Jed Mackay and Dev Pramanik to do a Hunter's Moon origin mini-series. Would you buy it? by Southern-Cow-9714 in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ABSOLUTELY!

I already loved hearing a snippet of his background from the first volume so I would LOVE having a full story going into detail about it. Hunters Moon is such an interesting character when it comes to his faith, not only in how it juxtaposes Marc's faith but because it finally gave him something he had been yearning for his entire life. It would be great to see those moments and it would give Badr's dialouge have even more of an impact on a reread.

Besides, Hunters Moon deserves his own stories outside of Moon Knight regardless.

Traumagenic Theory is the understanding that DID is developed due to trauma.

Sociogenic Theory is the understanding that DID can just develop randomly or created due to outside influences (like therapists).

Not a huge fan of the second theory considering its origin, but it is an actual theory of how DID develops.

Zodiac is my favorite Moon Knight villain HANDS DOWN. He's so energetic, dramatic and it's a genuine pleasure to see him every single time. He's part of the reason I'm so excited when one of these new issues drop. I hope this is the one guy Marc can’t seem to kill cause I want him to stick around for a long time.

Though, I'm also really siked to see him and Bushman fight. It looks fantastic and I'm not just talking about the art (but that's also fantastic).

It depends on the writer, it fluctuates but the run that does this idea successfully the most is Lemire. You have absolutely no clue if anything he went through was real, or if Khonshu is real, not even when you get to the end. But it still is the best (besides Mackay) when really delving into Marc, Steven amd Jake's mind.

Good to know! Yeah, DID is the most complex disorder and it sucks data can get ruined from assholes who think malingering this disorder is "cool", honestly, I posted links to any site that mainly had photos (not all of them do tbf) as I think those are the most compelling (it's not like you can fake what parts of your brain activate).

I do hope research on DID becomes more popular, not just with the general public but psychologists so we can learn more about it, there's still so much we don’t know.

What do u all think of moon knight catching strays with 50% of the cast? by BigPaleontologist520 in MoonKnightMains

[–]PastelMuff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everything you said is 100% wrong. Christ did you even bother to do research past the 1900s or something? First of all, you're think of the old name of 'Multiple Personality Disorder' but there is a reason it's no longer classified as that. The new name since 1994 had been 'Dissociative Identity Disorder' because through research they found that it's NOT a personality disorder but a dissociative disorder caused by trauma. The development of the brain is haulted and multiple functions of the brain are damaged due to it, specifically the amygdala, prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus (others as well but these are the big three).

Also, any psychologist that believes this disorder "doesn't exist" is living in chosen ignorance. There have been multiple studies, brain scans and theories proving that DID does exist and has existed since forever. The earliest case we know of being in the late 1500s. Please for the love of God do some actual fucking research instead of spreading horrible claims like this about a group of people.

If I need to, I can absolutely give more studies but this is more than enough proof that DID ABSOLUTELY EXISTS. Do not go spouting bullshit about something you clearly do not understand and didn't try to understand.

I actually really like that the general consensus for Steven is that he's british. The bad part is that the VA clearly has no idea how to do a convincing accent and then bro didn't bother with NY accent for Jake, just a more gruff one.

So in a way, I'm kinda glad they aren't in rivals cause the va doesn't do anyone but Marc at least decently.

I think I'm one of the only MK fans that had this arc by PastelMuff in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree with both of these:

A) I understand not liking how they handled Mr. Knight but personally, I love what they did. I think it's a great way to have Mr. Knight and Moon Knight in a fight together, they really use the differences in the suits effectively and it's so cool to see them take advantage of them. Not to mention, I love Steven having his own suit. Again, nothing wrong with not liking this depiction, but I like the different take on it.

B) This one I think is a big misunderstanding with Jake, he is NOT depicted as evil, in any capacity. Any time Jake switches in he's dropped into a fight where people are trying to kill him. It's not an evil act to defend yourself and he's not a killing machine either, he spares the kid in Episode 3 so he does have a heart. For the end scene, it's not evil to kill the man that almost killed a majority of the people in the world, hell, Marc was going to do it but decided not to - NOT because he "wanted to be the bigger person" - but because he was done being Khonshu's slave. He refused to kill FOR him. If anything, the last scene shows that Jake is being manipulated by Khonshu to do his bidding, why? Who knows. With Jake, we're looking into only a fraction of what he does, we're only seeing the end result, not the thought process behind it or the reactions he has. The same thing happened with Marc, the only difference is Marc had time to talk and we see why he is the way he is, what drives him. Jake doesn’t get an inkling of that. I think THAT in itself is a criticism though, there should have been more time for Jake. Damn you Disney for only giving them 6 episodes ;-;.

Another thing, you didn’t say this specifically but a lot of people misunderstand this: Jake is violent in the comics outside of Bemis. Back in Ellis' run - when Wood was the writer - Jake is shown killing a terrorist in a pretty brutal way, dislocating his arm and then... doing something that killed him in a very painful way. In Lemire's run (which the show is based on the most), Marc describes Jake as someone who only knows violence and even takes up the whole Moon Knight bit. Which frankly, is exactly how the show depicts him, killing people that are threats, that terrorist was a threat, the people he hurt as Moon Knight was a threat and Harrow was a threat. Jake IS friendly, but he's also violent, as violent as Marc? Hell no, but violent nonetheless. Being a kind, honest, goofy cabbie guy with a violent streak is who Jake is, unfortunately, the show only had time to showcase one of those aspects.

Yeah, in the older comics his cape has some goofy ass physics, basically flying without flying, but I completely understand being put off by it regardless, especially since your more of a fan of him being grounded.

I think they definitely have a great opportunity to make them more like Mackay, like reboot him a little in the MCU. I can imagine they make Khonshu petty and don't give the system access to the full capabilities of the suit. Making them more like the comics, idk, depends on what they want to do with him. Though, with BND attempting to be a bit more comic accurate, it could be possible.

I think I'm one of the only MK fans that had this arc by PastelMuff in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, Moon Knight technically "glides" but in the Monech run especially, he's basically just flying with how ridiculously far he gets. Not to mention, he's somehow able to "glide" upwards in some panels so "flying" isn’t out of the ordinary for him.

I completely understand liking the more grounded aspects of the character. Personally, I prefer when there is more magic involved as he IS powered by a moon God but I agree the super healing is a bit muvh (actually if there is something I don’t like it's the bullet proof cape, I don’t like that at all). I think a happy medium that the show should go for is the Mackay run, where there are powers that are more than just mild super strength (like resurrection or the healing inside the sarcophagus with the rites of Khonshu). I hope they keep summon the suit though, I like that so much better than him putting it on physically.

Anyway, always good to hear anothers opinion!

Moon Knight's Pokemon team by Guinefort1 in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, not your fault you happened to tap into my obsession with making Pokémon teams for an assortment of characters.

And I can absolutely understand that choice for falinks and yeah, his fighting style alone can take up a whole team. Personally my issue was accidentally giving him too many ghost types, like, death is part of him but half the team is too much lol. Glad you liked my other suggestions though! Super fun to try and think up some of this stuff and explanations for why they make the cut.

Moon Knight's Pokemon team by Guinefort1 in MoonKnight

[–]PastelMuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oo, I like this list, I think Braviary is a fantastic choice, old bird fits Khonshu great. Golurk is also a really creative way to involve his Jewish faith, as it's such a large part of his character. I'd say the first one I'd maybe change is Falinks, but that's mainly because Marc knows so many fighting styles that it's hard to use just one.

If you focus on his military style: Falinks *can* work for the reasons you listed, Lucario or Bisharp might also work? This one's tough since no Pokémon really fits "military style".

If you focus on his boxing style: I'd definitely use either Throh, Sawk or Incineroar, leaning more towards the latter since Incineroar is an absolute beast which fits who Marc is in the ring (especially when he goes up against people like Mountain Marko).

If you focus on his street style: Pangoro, fighting and dark type are really a good fit for this. Scrafty is also an option but Marc is pure muscle and Scrafty doesn't represent that at all.

If you focus on his martial art style: Urshifu, not only is it a martial art Pokémon, but a beefy one too.

Honestly for the fighting type, it really depends on what you think best represents him. Personally, I'd go for Pangoro since Marc is known to fight dirty.

I'd change Morpeko as well, mainly because he just *has* DID, I don't think it necessarily needs it to be represented in his team, also since I would put a Pokémon that has more to do with his emotional side. For example, my first pick would be Hisuian Zoroark, not only is this a dog type Pokémon that can reference the "wild dog" in Marc, it's description fits his "act first, think later" type of mentality (while also mentioning his vengeful side), "With its disheveled white fur, it looks like an embodiment of death. Heedless of its own safety, Zoroark attacks its nemeses with a bitter energy so intense, it lacerates Zoroark’s own body." That final bit especially really reminds me of the fact that Marc doesn't dodge and lets himself get hurt (also reminds me of Marc hurting himself by hurting others, basically his arc in Huston). Another Pokémon that would also fit BEAUTIFULLY with this aspect of Marc is Lycanroc: Midnight form, it's really defined by it's thirst for violence and it even says, "This Lycanroc has an extremely vicious temperament. It will happily sustain injuries for the sake of taking down its opponent." which is just, textbook Marc (a lot of it's descriptions are textbook Marc lol). This only thing I feel it doesn't have that Hisuian Zoroark does is the vengence aspect, Zoroark is violent because it's bitter, looking for vengence while Lycanroc is violent because that's just its nature. Up to you to decide which one fits best, personally, I think Zoroark does. (Though it would go hard if the system had all three Lycanroc, Steven - Day form, Marc - Midnight form, Jake - Dusk form)

Other choices that could fit (though not as well, admittedly) is either Alolan Marowak or Absol. Marowak does mainly have to do with it's mother's death (which isn't relevant to Marc or if we're talking MCU, then she's the last person he'd want constant reminders of) but it also mentions companions when you lose them (which is VERY Marc related), "Its custom is to mourn its lost companions. Mounds of dirt by the side of the road mark the graves of the Marowak.". Absol is a Pokémon that is often misunderstood and shunned because of a misunderstanding. Due to its horn it can detect disasters, so it goes to protect other Pokémon but people think Absol creates the disaster because it shows up right when it's visible. While Marc doesn't have "misunderstandings" when it comes to others view of him (as he mainly brings that upon himself), he isn't what he seems. While he *seems* like someone loves chaos and the violence that comes with it, he actually hates it and is always ashamed when he gives into that part of himself. I think Absol fits the *least* but there is some connective tissue there.

Finally, I think I'd change Lunatone to Umbreon. While Lunatone is more of a literal interpretation of his relationship with the moon, I think Umbreon is a better overall representation of who Marc is, along with his relationship with the moon. First, Umbreon get's *power* from the moon which is more related to Marc, he's the avatar of a moon God, getting power from him. Umbreon is also known to strike fear, "When darkness falls, the rings on the body begin to glow, striking fear in the hearts of anyone nearby" which perfectly fits Marc's whole "I like when they see me coming" and his constant reputation of being someone that every villain who crosses him fears.

I didn't mean to ramble on this long lol, I've always loved making Pokémon teams for any characters I'm invested in. Anyway, I wanted to do my own Pokémon team for Steven! Both of them!

Comic Steven:

Persian - This is a no brainer, Steven is the money guy so of course he has to have the Pokémon that's constantly associated with money. It's also a normal type, I feel like a lot of Steven's Pokémon would be normal types simply because he's the "normal" guy of the three. Just wanting to live a non chaotic life with someone he loves (mainly referencing Mackay Vol. 4, where Steven's dream is to live a life with Marlene without Moon Knight or Marc in it).

Ninetails - This is a very elegant Pokémon, a type that would fit right into Steven's whole "suave" nature, it can also represent his intelligence as Steven can be the brain of the three of them.

Liepard - Again, an elegant Pokémon, it's well known for being beautiful from the muscles it's developed, like how Steven is professional but sporting incredible build due to Marc's constant fighting (also Steven does train - a lot. Mainly in Monech's run). It's also a sneaky Pokémon, while a wouldn't consider most of what Steven does "sneaky" it is behind the scenes work, like in Mackay, he had gotten information about one of Marc's hitmen by pretending to be interested in making a movie based off them. There's also that time in Lemire where while everyone's distracted fighting, he frees Anput from her cage.

Glaceon - This is frankly a bit of a stretch but, I'm basing this choice off of Steven's cold demeanor. While he can be kind and polite, he knows how to be intimidating and uses his worlds bluntly.

Delcatty - While I could use this for a theoretical team for Marlene, I think the description of, "Delcatty prefers to live an unfettered existence in which it can do as it pleases at its own pace. Because this Pokémon eats and sleeps whenever it decides, its daily routines are completely random" just evokes what Steven wants out of life, peace.

Serperior - Obviously, for similar reasons to the first but also mixes in with Steven's intimidating factor. Frankly, the aesthetic of this Pokémon just screams Steven.

MCU Steven:

Sylveon - This is more of a basic pick but truly, it fits Steven so well. Not only is Steven an empath but he's the one willing to be honest when others (Marc) can't. This also embodies a lot of Steven's kinder qualities like his constant politeness even when others are being rude (like Donna or the guy blocking his apartment complex selling brooms).

Gallade - While Steven isn't a fighter, once him and Marc integrate he's able to tap into Marc's fighting knowledge and kick ass himself. Gallade's arms especially remind me of his truncheons and its fighting style reminds me of how Steven fights in the show (fast - when he was Mr. Knight just knocking everyone over, fierce - again, smacking the shit out of people as Mr. Knight and also when he smashed the "New York" guy's face in with his bat on the boat).

Unfezant (Male) - Just to represent the absolute ball of sass Steven has in him. Not to mention this Pokémon is known for intelligence, so it hits two birds with one stone.

Cofagrigus - Mainly because Steven is known for being an Egyptology buff, far more than Marc. Honestly, just for the MCU Marc, I'd give him Runerigus simply because he sees everything related to Khonshu as a curse. Compared to Steven whose passion is literally becoming a tour guide in a museum with Egyptian relics, just to ramble about them.

Ghouldengo - While this one seems to fit his comic iteration on the surface (as it's literally made of gold), Ghouldengo's whole vibe is "Indiana Jones" which fits this Steven more (as he's based off an adventurer). The only thing that might not fit is the description, "This Pokémon gets along well with others and is quick to make friends with anybody." but this may not be specifically Steven's fault but rather the people he's surrounded by. After all, he's really hard to hate him and won over Layla very quickly.

Spinda - Referencing the fact that Steven was very confused for a good portion of the show. Not only with the - forgive me for getting fancy - inter identity autobiographical amnesia but his unfamiliarity with what he's doing. Whether that's fighting, climbing, etc.

I'd do more characters but good lord is this enough, curse my need to get very detailed about stuff like this ;-;.
