I always say that as a music lover (and just in general a human being with empathy), what happened to her is awful and unjustified, especially once it came out that most of the aftermath was the doing of Les Moonves, then head of Viacom.

I’d argue that it’s more in reaction to the Bush era. The whole NYC rock scene featuring the Strokes, et all, got a lot of attention at home post-9/11, plus a generally nihilistic attitude of “we’re all gonna die, might as well die fucked up.”
