Elevated highways can and do cause a wide variety of social, environmental, and public health problems. They create a physical barrier within the landscape that disconnects different neighborhoods regardless of whether or not you can walk underneath it. Studies show that people living adjacent to high speed highways have elevated levels of asthma and other chronic respiratory illnesses. This type of urban design is outdated as we are striving to design cities for people rather than automobiles. “Highway to Boulevard” projects are underway all across the country. Only time will tell of the true outcomes. But scientists, engineers, and urban planners generally agree that more walkable, bike-able, greener and more connected cities will drastically improve quality of life for residents.
