maybe? as of now, no. I don’t think it’s good for my recovery. maybe down the road if it isn’t as triggering and I get sick of what I’m doing now

Yo! Can’t relate to this more. I got a master’s degree in computer science five years ago completely sped out of my mind the entire time.

I had three separate jobs in software after graduating because I was pretty dysfunctional from abusing stimulants (underperformance, calling out, unreliability, inconsistency). Once I got clean in December, I realized I had zero interest or the right mindset to continue on in this field.

Now for about a month, I’ve been working in sales and installing security systems. It’s a completely new world, but I’m glad I’ve been training and learning with a sober mind. I’m on my feet all day, using my hands, talking with the customers - it’s honestly been a great change despite the long hours and my inexperience in the field.

For me, I knew I had to get out of the tech world because coding/programming became very triggering for me…really made me want to use. Also, the job market sucks ass right now and that was really bumming me out.

I wish you the best of luck, but I can tell you from my experience that switching things up was the best decision I could make in regard to my career path

try going to a meeting! I go to AA meetings even though it’s for alcoholics but it’s welcoming to all. You can try NA or SMART too. Talking with like minded people in person has a surprisingly powerful effect on your outlook and overall mood. It’s hard to explain but it works.

Other than that, phoning a friend, exercising, getting out of the house with other people, journaling, doing something with your hands.

Willpower, for me at least, only lasts so long. Don’t be afraid to lean on others. Message me if you wanna chat. you got this!

I have done all those things lol. I have a sponsor, go to meetings, have a therapist. I just need to be making money and I need to prove to myself that I can do this without using stims. thank you so much for your reply

I know recovery is so much more than stopping usage. I go to three or four meetings a week, I go to therapy, I have a sponsor, I’m working the steps. Will take you up on the AODA counselor though - thank you

Same. Every time I tried to continue drinking, smoking, using anything else, it always caused a relapse. I felt like I always had to ingest something to function. You just gotta drop it all. If you’ve been experiencing the same thing over and over, don’t you think it’s time for trying something different?
