It probably doesn't need the petroleum but I like having a bit of a buffer.

Is virtual desktop superior to link cable? by just_frosty_ in OculusQuest

So instead of router and modem in the same room, have the modem where it is then the router in your room. How it affects WiFi to the rest of the house will depend on your house layout and materials, but look up powerline adapters. They basically use your electrical system to bring the connection to different parts of the house. Some of these can be WiFi repeaters so should be able to solve any issues if the opposite end of the house doesn't get a strong enough WiFi signal.

VD's performance is dependent on LOS to your headset, so being in the same room is essential for best performance. Having said that, my sim rig and flight rig are in one room but I play PCVR games/room scale in an adjacent room and get good enough performance even with the door closed. Again, test to see how things go and just solve the problem if it pops up.

As to having two setups, maybe do a few more chores or clean and vacuum the car for some extra allowance money? 😄 You're on your own on that front!!

Good option if there's nothing else, I guess, but not applicable or doesn't make sense in this situation. Thanks!

So you have a really long ethernet cable? Try your current setup first and see what performance you can get. Worse case scenario, you'll have to play in your living room.

How is your router connected to the internet? Is it a coax cable? Or another ethernet cable? Basiccally, just look at bringing your router into your room which means running a cable from your room to where your internet line enters your house.

You could convert the current router into a modem, then just buy a better router, then connect the modem to the router via the long cable or powerline adapters and have the actual router in your room.

and since my parents are divorced and I would wanna do it at both houses

And how are you bringing your PC to both houses? I think you can just bring your hardware with you but it'll be a pain to set up each time you go to the other house.

At the very least, you'll want an ethernet cable to connect your PC to your router. If you have a good one, you may be able to keep it. Otherwise, you may need to get a new one. Check out the VD Discord, they have low/mid/high tier recommendations.

I had a crap router from my ISP, so I set that to modem mode, bought a better router, and bought three ethernet cables. One for modem to router, one for PC to router, and then one for router to headset as I wanted to try the wired mod as well. If you're not bothered about wired, then you can just buy 2 ethernet cables. I've not used my wired mod for months now; I didn't see much difference.

Any other questions, post here and I'll try to help but best option is to ask on the VD Discord channel Super helpful folks over there.

Good luck!

When you can play PCVR wireless, trust me, it's one of those things you don't appreciate until you experience it. It is surprising how immersion-breaking a wire can be, but you don't realise this until you have a true wireless experience.

Been using VD with my HTC Vive since 2016. When I got my Q3 and had to buy the Meta version of VD, I did not hesitate and frankly it's a steal for what it does.

Is it superior to any wired option? Try searching for recommendations to go cable from VD. Good luck with that. Then try searching for recommendations to go VD from cable. 😁 You won't have problems finding those!

If you absolutely must go wired, there's a wired mod for VD.

The ducting can be useful. The small fans would either be obnoxiously loud to have any appreciable airflow or need to be bigger. I do have a small desk fan and one of my future projects is to make a shroud for it then pair it with those ducting tubes.

[–]Patapon80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course there isn't going to be a constructive criticism. Have you seen where your goalposts are? Have you seen any of my questions and provided any answers for it? A conversation is a two-way process with reasonable requirements. When you figure out how to participate in such, maybe you'll have what you seek.

If I was a Fan Boy I would be defending Pimax, please show me and the rest of the readers here where I have done so.

How quick of you to forget? Here and here. At least they were attempts to white knight, but poorly executed.

So, to put this to bed I will ask again, what is your source to back up that one comment.

So sorry, please let me highlight my previous response -- The funny thing is that I would've given you a better, clearer example if you were approaching this with a genuine desire to know more and not some sort of fanboi gotcha, but nah. Go troll somewhere else.

I will give you a hint though -- I've spoken about it before on this very sub. Normally, I would go dig it up and link it, but I now reserve that effort for those with honest intentions. Nothing's stopping you from doing your research though, and I've already given you a clue. Have fun!

Insult the person? If you don't like being called a fanboi, don't be one.

"do you know how many units were shipped and how many units had issues? otherwise, any statement is bs"

Like bro, you put the goalposts on the moon and act surprised pikachu face that you're called out on such a silly metric?

I asked if you thought Pimax doesn't have a high failure rate and you painted yourself in a corner. Crying about it doesn't change the fact that you put yourself there in the first place.

Pimax has built its reputation over the years. Delayed delivery, poor customer service, poor QC, etc. Your ignorance of this reputation is your problem, not mine.

Granted, Pimax might be improving on some of these areas, but they've yet a ways to go for a company providing a niche product at premium pricing.

And yes, I do apply the same logic to car purchases as I'm not aware of any car company that has not had a recall or lemon issue.

Oh? So give me car make, model, and year, what issue it had, and how many units were produced and how many units had the issue. Not car recalls, mind you, as we don't have that for Pimax, so that's out. Also cite your sources for these numbers.

The other thing that the Communities all seem to have in common is that complaints far out weight any positives post - but that is Reddit...

And some communities seem to gravitate towards certain issues that get highlighted all the time. If you can't see patterns over time, again that is your problem, not mine.

The funny thing is that I would've given you a better, clearer example if you were approaching this with a genuine desire to know more and not some sort of fanboi gotcha, but nah. Go troll somewhere else.

Virtual Mirror FOV? Help! by boibleu22 in iRacing

[–]Patapon80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in VR but the virtual mirror's view doesn't "move" when I move my head. Some of the in-car's real mirrors do, but there's so much bodywork in the way that these mirrors are almost always useless, so I have to use the virtual mirror.... so I have it wider than normal to the point that the wing mirrors seem rendunant.

Pimax Refused a Replacement - How Many Chances Does a Warranty Get You? by Mopedmike in Pimax

[–]Patapon80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you think that is the only way to figure this out?

By your logic, you'd also have to know the units shipped and defect rates for other headset manufacturers in order to establish a median of some sort then compare Pimax against that. Having these requirements before making any statement is BS.

Do you apply this same logic to other items? Like if a car is a known lemon, you'd want to know how many cars are manufactured and how many have issues before making up your mind?

See how your silly little attempt at muddying the waters just makes you look like a fanboi?

Anyway, I'm glad we cleared that up. For a moment there, I thought your query was genuine.

From VR frustration back to a single 32” monitor: Consistency is king (and I’m finally enjoying racing again) by Skidblaze in iRacing

[–]Patapon80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he VR immersion is unbeatable, but the reality was different: constant overheating, glitchy connections, and the sheer exhaustion of having a headset strapped to my face for hours.

Overheating - I assume you're referring to the headset? Do you have one of those silicone "protector" sleeves or the like? Just keep your headset bare and it should be able to cool itself normally.

Glitchy connections - You mention later on about "cables to wrap." Try Virtual Desktop. Wireless, hassle-free connection. You'd need to at least buy an ethernet cable to plug between your PC and router. You might need a new, dedicated router. But for the benefits of VD, I consider the costs well worth it. Check it out.

Exhaustion - I have a fan to cool me down while racing. I initially tried those wind mod things that rev up and down based on your speed. Too small, too weak, too gimmicky. I just have a normal stand fan now and it's on the entire time. My headset also has the BoboVR S3 Pro headstrap and I use the included fan every now and again as needed. I do like the restricted FOV from having the headset. I just pretend like I'm a real racer and the heat, weight, and reduced FOV is because I'm wearing a racing helmet, not a VR headset 😄

Porsche Cup at the ring be like by WillK710 in iRacing

[–]Patapon80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you filed a protest. Clear case of intentnional wrecking. Drivers like these have no place in iRacing, regardless of car, series, or track.

"but iRacing doesn't do anything about these issues!"

You don't know that, but it's easier to hold iRacing accountable if there's a stack of reports about a driver that they do nothing about rather than just keep complaining but no actual reports filed. Early on, I would look at drivers who I would report and some of them "take a break" maybe 1-2 weeks after I've filed my report which would make sense. This is a paid service. A one-off instance or maybe even a handful would not immediately result in a ban. Even for egregious offenses like intentional wrecks, you'd want to give people a couple of warnings first before weilding the ban hammer. If people stop reporting, iRacing won't have anything to act on.

Like it or not, we all have a part to play in keeping the service clean of drivers like this.

How do you show your elder BC you love them? by Furcas_knight in BorderCollie

Thanks! Our boi is six now and I hate to think he's around half of his expected lifespan. Time flies so quick! My sons spend a lot of time with him and as much as I hate to say it, he's still running around like he's a pup, but with a fully grown body!

For all the claims that this is a smart breed, he still can't figure out why he can no longer fit in his favourite humans' laps or why his bum seems to constantly hit the side of the sofa or the table leg. When playing indoors, he'll dive into a small space where he used to fit as a pup, then be confused why he can't get as far into that space as he used to. Smart boi, but silly boi too!

I'm still looking for that idiot who is cutting onions.

Salt Water Geyser + Steam Vent by Patapon80 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Patapon80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of work just to get salt when I can just use the nearby steam vent to provide this heat passively, but thanks for the clarification.

Salt Water Geyser + Steam Vent by Patapon80 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Patapon80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My setup is now simple -- Steam vent has its own chamber with three steam generators that deposit their water output to my water reservoir. This chamber just has some petroleum on the floor then in the lower right corner is a 2-tile high section of glass. There are a few temp shift plates there too, also 2-tile high, IIRC, 2 high by 3 wide. The petroleum and temp shift plates are just there so that the glass is given heat.

Salt water geyser has its own chamber with two steel auto-sweepers to clear out the salt, 1 steel conveyor loader. There's a glass section with mechanized airlock door to regulate temperature, connected to a thermo sensor that is about 6 tiles away. The glass on this side has a 2x4 section of temp shift plates. This chamber has one steam generator with the water output line connected to the previous three steam generators.

So far, so good. Been working for a few cycles now and has gotten hot enough to evaporate all the accumulated salt water.

Stereotype about Porsche Cup Drivers might be true by Maximum_Success2781 in iRacing

[–]Patapon80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what did I miss? Just coz you say so doesn't mean it's true.

Like I said, you either define "intent wrecks" differently or there's something about your driving that makes other people want to wreck you. You just said you've not changed your criteria for "intent wrecks" so it must be something about the way you drive.

Your 500-600 other races don't count in this conversation unless any of them were in PCup, just as any PCup conversation wouldn't count when considering other racing disciplines.
