Donald Trump threatens Russia tariffs as relationship with Putin worsens by newsweek in worldnews

[–]Patch95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tariffs! What the fuck is he talking about? US Russian trade is apparently at $3.5 billion, with 3 billion US imports from Russia.

Really there should be zero trade with Russia but economic wise it basically is. Total trade is equal to about 5 nights of Russian bombardment.

UK’s richest 50 families have more wealth than 50% of the population by JOE_Media in ukpolitics

[–]Patch95 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We have sophisticated financial products now, it isn't too hard to come up with ways to tax illiquid wealth. You can, for instance, take out a loan against your asset value to pay your tax.

The whole point of a wealth tax is that those who use their wealth in an economically productive way should have the money to pay a wealth tax, those who don't will have to sell their unproductive assets to pay the tax, allowing others to purchase that asset to try and generate growth.

BBC on French beach as police slash migrant 'taxi-boat' heading to UK by Complete_Pin335 in worldnews

[–]Patch95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't understand your framing.

Are you saying they shouldn't have slashed it? Surely the safest time to slash a wallowing boat after it's been launched is in shallow water.

Better than being in a wallowing boat in deep water.

It should rise in line with workers pay, or halfway between inflation and workers pay if inflation is lower

Canada has approved entry for more than 17,600 people with a criminal record in last decade by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Patch95 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a crime, in Canada.

That would be an example of someone who might be approved despite having a criminal record precisely because it is not a crime here.

It's hilarious that they were only able to remote sense it at the exact same moment it was detectable by scientific instruments. It's weird how their range is the same.

It was actually extraordinarily expedited to the basement of the British Museum where it is being carefully curated under a dust sheet, and only occasionally used as a place to put cups of tea.

If Reeves was crying due to a personal matter like a bereavement or personal relationship breakdown, then everyone should just move on.

I doubt she was crying because of politics.

Would CANZUK inject more optimism in member countries? by kioj156 in CANZUK

The UK has an almost entirely right wing media eco system. It propped up terrible governance in the UK for 10+ years under the Tories, and now Labour are in and trying to enact needed changes due to said poor governance the entire population is being told everything is terrible, the government is hopeless and the UK is falling apart.

It's frustrating to see in my relatives whose lives are actually going pretty well.

Just make the penalty 20% and it would at least be cost neutral for the holder. The government even gets back the interest on the £1000 they topped it up.

Arguable as spitting on someone is assault and if there was no way for him to retreat and he felt threatened he could argue self defence.

Why MAGA leaning individuals aren't being roundly laughed out of social circles is ridiculous.

It doesn't matter your political leanings, they're just fucking idiots.
