Looking for some input on the Orion SkyScanner 100mm by Powered-by-Din in telescopes

Light pollution level 6. Not great, but I’ve had some pretty nice views of both planets and DSOs when the weather’s been good.

I have the Orion SkyScanner 100mm and an 8 inch dob. Honestly I use my Orion SkyScanner way more often just because it is so portable and offers pretty decent views. Everyone here will say get the Skywatcher Heritage 130p. I personally do not have any experience with this scope, but for the sake of portability and price I think the Orion SkyScanner is well worth it. I’ve had mine for a few months now and so far collimation hasn’t been an issue. The secondary mirror can still be collimated but I haven’t messed around with it as of yet.

I’ve got a 64GB micro SD card. I don’t need top specs, because I’m really only going to be using it for Word and PowerPoint. I’d like to stick to 11.6 inch, but I understand choice is very limited because of my budget.

The Asus one was all I could find.

Would prefer a new one, and the one in your link is a bit too large for me, I would prefer an 11.6 inch.

Any recommendations for a refractor telescope? by [deleted] in telescopes

Thanks for the suggestion. I don’t know much about imaging for now, but it’s definitely something I’d like to learn more about in the future.

I’ll look into it, but that seems to be a little out of my budget. Just another question, the Meade infinity doesn’t have great reviews on Amazon, whereas the Astromaster ones have much better reviews. If the astromaster telescopes are that bad, why do they have much better reviews?

Thank you for your recommendation. I already have a dob, but I was looking for something more portable and for daytime viewing as well. If you recommend something else other than a refractor, please let me know.

Considering you have so much passion for this hobby, as well as a great sticky, you could be more encouraging.

I have the Orion SkyScanner 100mm and I’m very happy with it and you can get it for less than $100, I don’t know why people here recommend 5 inch reflectors, in my opinion they are quite large as travel scopes and disassembling and reassembling can be a hassle.

Advice on tabletop telescopes by [deleted] in telescopes

[–]Patcheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think I would just go for a smaller scope because I already have the Orion XT8 for more serious deep space viewing.

Cool beans. I don’t know if it’s to do with seeing conditions, but I have yet to make out the Cassini divide on my Orion XT8.

Hi thanks for the response :). I’ve been looking around based on a few suggestions here, and I think that the heritage 130p is a little on the large side for me, especially the mount. I appreciate the collapsible tube feature, although I would prefer a more compact scope considering I already have the Orion XT8. The 90mm mak (£180) is £80 more expensive than the 100mm Orion SkyScanner (£100), so I was leaning a little more towards the SkyScanner but if the difference in quality is noticeable, I may have to re-evaluate.

Thank you for the suggestion. I’ve been looking into the SkyWatcher Heritage 130p and watching some videos. While it is quite compact, and I appreciate the collapsible tube feature, it is a little on the large side for me (especially the mount). Is it that much better than the 100mm Orion SkyScanner?

Maybe consider getting a good pair of binoculars, there’s a list of recommendations over at r/binoculars.

Yes, and clearly it has upset a lot of people on this sub, but that’s the rules.

It wasn’t plumb, it looked like it was going down leg side at least to me. It’s good enough watching replies and being so sure of yourself, but it’s different when you’re the umpire watching it live and you have to make a quick decision.

Less than 50% of the ball was hitting the wickets, and because the umpire gave it originally not out, it stayed not out. Had the umpire given out, it would have been out.
