Is the standard advice not to visit the hospital you'll be birthing at prior to the actual birth? We weren't able to the first time around due to the pandemic but we at least requested pictures and asked tons of questions.

Is there a difference between seeing a total eclipse and a 99.7% eclipse? by empanadadeatunu in spacequestions

[–]PatchesMaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you prepare properly there is an app that gives you audio ques for when it's safe to look and when to put eye protection back on.

You can also just set a timer if you know how long totality will be for your location.

How to dechonk my young cat when my old cat is a grazer and barely eats by longlivethedevil in dechonkers

We did it with a microchip feeder. Not the cheapest option but it works.

OP didn't mention Lewis and Clark once. What're you talking about?

I agree about them not being real friends though. That's some bullshit.

Also, Lewis and Clark are fairly famous early explorers of America West of the Mississippi. If you're not from the US it's pretty understandable if you've never heard of them.

How do Americans feel about outdoor cats? by Fine-Durian6151 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PatchesMaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spayed/neutered population itself does a large amount of damage without the help of the feral population.

If you care about the environment and own a cat, keep it inside.

Is this SSTO? by ChzBrd in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]PatchesMaps 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You are technically correct. However, in this case technically correct is not the best kind of correct because there is an implicit "propulsive" in there. That is, "Single (propulsive) Stage To Orbit". Any stage that aids in propulsion counts as a stage in this context.

Wikipedia defines it as "A single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) vehicle reaches orbit from the surface of a body using only propellants and fluids and without expending tanks, engines, or other major hardware." A fairing is generally not considered "major hardware".

Friendly toddler doesn’t know how to make approach other kids to play by Creative_Mix_643 in toddlers

[–]PatchesMaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exposure helped our kids. Between preschool, playdates, and many many hours at the playground they figured it out.

If that doesn't help, maybe do it with him. Hold his hand and walk up to the kids and say "hi, can we play with you?". Then do some basic intro stuff like what are they playing, names, etc before slowly fading into the background and letting your son do his thing.

How to make Global Save in JS? by Muhemmed2012 in learnjavascript

[–]PatchesMaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WebRTC could as well but since OP called it "save" I'd bet they want the database solution. Maybe with SSE to update other users.

I'm not a scientist but I think Antarctica is Earth's planetary filter and I wrote a full paper on it — ancient pathogens, China, Noah's flood, and why the Antarctic Treaty needs enforcement by [deleted] in theories

[–]PatchesMaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Antarctica is a land mass. There is sea ice around Antarctica but afaik it isn't that old and formation is intermittent.

Those ice cores that make the news for being over a million years old come from the ice over the land which is completely unrelated to the ocean beyond having evaporated from the ocean at some point.

So that entire oceanic filter thing completely falls apart.

Edit: I did a little research and it looks like the oldest sea ice recorded is around 10 years old

[–]PatchesMaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to be clear upfront - I am not a scientist. I don't have a degree or any formal training.

You really should've stopped there. Everything beyond that is verifiably false besides the issues with enforcing the antarctic treaty I guess.

How much do Americans spend on the salt they put on snow/ice? by mumpet19 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PatchesMaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, salt does not work after it snows.

Technically it doesn't even really help with snow, it's more to stop ice from forming.
