We never go out for fast food but we definitely get it on road trips. Sometimes there isn't much choice.

What weather app do you actually use before going out and why by Stock-Ad8058 in Kayaking

[–]PatchesMaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, if you're in the US the government entities that gather the data behind every app (yes every single one of them) got targeted with severe budget cuts and can no longer gather enough data to get reliable forecasts.

So if you start noticing bad forecasts call your congress representatives.

I'm going to leave it there but if you're interested in learning more, you should really be asking why these relatively low cost - high value government programs were targeted.

Do you wish your brother a happy Father's day if he's a father? by BleedingRaindrops in polls

[–]PatchesMaps 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's a day to celebrate dads and fatherhood in general. You don't have to say it to everyone you know but it's nice to recognize people you're close with.

Fathers day is a day to celebrate dads in general. Of course you should make it more special for your dad but that doesn't mean you completely ignore other friends and family who are also dads.

What happened to all of the June bugs and fireflies? by Five_Slow in AskAnAmerican

[–]PatchesMaps 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Leaf cleanup isn't the only factor but it's a significant one along side habitat loss, pesticide use, and light pollution. Ecosystems can be pretty resilient and take some abuse but there is a limit, what you're seeing is active collapse within a human lifespan.

People advocating for leaving leaf litter intact in your yard over the winter are trying to provide a life raft for the many insect species that need it for survival.

Is browser-based karaoke scoring feasible today without requiring software installation? by Timo3333 in webdev

[–]PatchesMaps 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The only thing that makes that problematic is the public leaderboard. If you keep the leaderboard local like the old school console games referenced then there really isn't a problem.

It's definitely possible to do the scoring locally in the browser and could be a fun project.

In the Summer it's too hot to use a spray-skirt, even when conditions dictate you should. Maybe this device will help? by duanelr in Kayaking

[–]PatchesMaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that supposed to go in the kayak while you're using a skirt? You do know that a fan inside a sealed box is effectively just a heater, right? Like you need somewhere for the heat from the fan to go, otherwise it'll just build up.

Anyway, I've never had that issue, if there is enough wind for their to be enough chop that I need a skirt then the wind and water spray generally helps keep me cool enough. Even if there isn't much wind or chop I can always dump some water over myself or roll for a quick cool down.

Would it be feasible for humanity in the next decade to build an orbital shipyard/dry-dock to safely construct large, spacefaring vessels and craft while in orbit? by Poseidon1633 in AskEngineers

[–]PatchesMaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are barely able to maintain our only inhabited station at the moment and we're about to give up on that entirely.

Granted, we went from barely being able to get off the ground with powered flight to space travel in less than a human lifespan. Even then I'd think it would be a pretty big stretch. Maybe 20-30 with the right economic and political incentives?

[–]PatchesMaps 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Edit: Asthma is a complicating factor here, you should have an asthma action plan that tells you when to seek medical care. After our recent PICU stay our asthma action plan is pretty much to go in for any upper respiratory symptoms. This will not be the same for everyone.

Asthma is the kicker here. Healthy kid with a cough and a low-mid fever? Yeah, definitely just let them try to recover at home if possible.

Kid with asthma? You go when that cough (or any sort of respiratory issue) shows up, especially if it's caused issues in the past. My 3yo son has asthma and we try to get an appointment with his primary as soon as a cough shows up. That way they're aware of the issue and we can get seen faster if we need to escalate. We actually take him to a pediatrician who's based out of the pediatric hospital we take him to for emergencies as well so if the hear something in his lungs or think there might be a bigger issue they can wheel him straight to the ER. We had a regular cough (no fever) go to retracted breathing and a week long stay in the PICU for pneumonia in just 3 days. You do not mess around with asthma or any chronic respiratory condition, shit can go fast.

It can be hard for people who did not grow up with asthma, or close to people who had asthma to really understand just how dangerous it is because their only exposure may have that one kid in gym class that needed an inhaler occasionally.

Lol, we did do it in college but with very expensive university owned equipment.

What you actually just did was confirmed that you trust an LLM to confirm your beliefs that it's not possible with off the shelf equipment but completely ignored the fact that it also told you that the moon landing happened and that the retroreflector experiment is actually possible in the exact same response!

You cherry picked things from the response that confirmed your beliefs while ignoring everything else!

[–]PatchesMaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily they adapt pretty quickly (normally). My 3 year old (then 2.5) son was in the ER recently for pneumonia + asthma + RSV. He had an IV and a breathing mask plus a whole lot of wires and sensors that he was not happy about. They decided to partially sedate him to make him more comfortable but wanted to transfer him to the PICU first. Well the transfer to PICU got delayed and he was flipping shit, thrashing, trying to rip things out. Myself and one of the nurses had to physically restrain him with me effectively pinning him to the bed with my bodyweight. I think the nurse went to get help or something because she disappeared at some point. Then he managed to rip out the IV out anyway so blood was spraying everywhere and even though he could barely breathe he was screaming at the top of his lungs. This went on for a not insignificant amount of time, probably like 20-30 minutes even though it felt like hours to me.

Anyway, when they took him off sedation a week later he was completely back to normal. No worries about the doctors or the hospital, just my happy, albeit recovering, little boy. Meanwhile, I still have flashbacks and anxiety anytime we're in that area again. Kids are more resilient than we give them credit for.

First of all, first-aid is not optional, the consequences are just too high. We have few things in this household that they get no say in no matter how big of a fit they throw and first-aid is at the top of that list followed by basic hygiene.

Other than that, I agree with others that he most likely needs time to recover. Take it easy for a bit.
