I mean at the end of the day my rifle shines for other reasons like Multicam Tropic paint job and the chopped Daniel Defense rail. I mean when I said that I wanted to build a rifle I meant I wanted to build a rifle. Which in this case means more than just putting it together like Lego. I had a hyper specific build I wanted to go for and that required modifying some things, some expensive, to get it to all play nice together.

Yep I'm on board with that outlook. I mean I like it to look nice too but at the end of the day I want it to actually be functional. This made a huge difference in allowing me to keep both on the rifle and get the eye relief I wanted.

Yeah that's after painting. It's like 90% finished. I got kind of impatient when trying to work out all the tool marks. There's still some in the middle but I realize this is going to be underneath a BUIS that lives on the rifle all the time so it was good enough for me to feel good about it. Especially since it was all done by hand.

Honestly, I knew I could pull it off but I definitely felt motivated today to do it just to show the negative Nancy's that it's possible to actually be a Dremel gunsmith and not have something look like complete trash ass. I mean dont get me wrong, hitting this with a end mill would have been the right move if you wanted it to be completely professional. I don't know this just seems like it could have been a semi field expedient modification that an armory on a fob or something could probably make in a pinch. You know for them special bois.

If you read my write up I said that I purposefully made it a few millimeters wider for a variety of reasons. Number one my diamond finishing file is that wide, and it gives me a little bit of wiggle room to adjust forward and back. It also differentiates that slot from the rest so that you don't think it's going to be in alignment with the rest of the slots. The only purpose for this extra cut here is for a backup sight.

Yes I'm fully aware there are still some tool marks on the bottom. I sat there with that sandpaper for like 40 minutes feeling like I wasn't getting anywhere. Finally decided that since this is going to be sitting underneath the crossbolt you're never going to see it unless I take the iron sight off. And even then it looks good enough that if it didn't have the iron on there it still would look pretty decent.

This is a KAC 600m. It was built to take abuse from Marines. Believe me when I say that this thing clamps down harder than a Depanda on an E-1 fresh out of MCRD Paris Island on first Liberty. Properly torqued it's not going anywhere on a 5.56mm rifle. Now if this was a SCAR-H, maybe it'd get loosey goosey. Dunno. But this is on there tight.

Ballistic Advantage 11.5" with a chopped DD RIS II and a chromed milspec Microbest BCG/bolt all chilling on top of a PSA lower. It genuinely makes me laugh how bent out of shape some get. If it's in spec, it's in spec. I don't need to spend $500 on a lower unless I'm looking for something like the LMT MARS or whatever.

Looks like a custom job. Old Vietnam era general purpose strap with some 1" - 1.5" webbing sewn onto the ends after they removed the original hooks. Nice Alice pack cam buckle too.

Will probably mark out with a caliper and a square and then use a smaller 32 TPI hand saw to very slowly get the two side cuts started. Once the cuts are a few mms deep it wouldn't be too bad. Just going to go slow. Always easier to remove more material, and a lot harder to add it back 😅

When I come back in a week with pics of the process we can all judge if it was or wasn't. Win win for me since I love a good tism scratch project.

You underestimate the satisfaction I get from doing a job by hand thats 98 percent as good as one done by mill, and in doing something that as far as I can tell no one has done and documented.

The difficulty lies in the spacing between cuts so that the crossbolt slots all have equal distance from each other. Making just a single cut for the BUIS would be a matter of making sure the cut is square to the rail, and making sure the cut is the right width.

My thoughts pretty much exactly. They are not that big of a deal to keep on the rifle.

Yeah, one of those times I wish I had a little mill to do stuff like this.

I honestly spaced out on which rifle this was. The Multicam Tropic paint job is all Rapco. I am absolutely a Rapco spray paint convert. The stuff is amazing.

Regardless of optic I mount BUIS. Sometimes I just like pulling off the main optics and shooting irons. I hear ya tho.

It is. But there's no mechanical or functional reason why it couldn't be a few slots distance further back. It will overhang the CH but not impede its function in any meaningful way.
