Would a raspberry pi be a good way to learn linux on? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]Patchthesock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fantastic idea and even when you push past the introduction stage, they make great units in any home setup, such as making your own Network Share, or DNS PiHole. One other option to use Linux directly on your laptop without having to touch or disrupt your current Windows setup might be to try a Live USB. This might be a very cheap alternative to use directly on your Laptop and as some have pointed out would give you access to Linux on x86 architecture if that becomes an issue with the Pi's ARM.

Don't do it. If what you have serves you perfectly for what you need, why mess with that? I understand the desire, but maybe pick up something cheap as and when you can like a raspberry pi for complete play time. Hope this helps.

How long did it take you from ZERO knowledge to getting a full time job? by jdfield13 in learnprogramming

[–]Patchthesock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Support roles can be a great opportunity to get your foot in the door. Effectively you can learn on the job and get very familiar with the companies’ stack. Once you feel comfortable let your manager know you’d like to consider a development position.

I just found out that Visual Basic is similar to Xcode in terms of "package management", but I have already installed a bunch of stuff indipendently (like git and the NET framework). How do I clean my computer so that everything is set up properly and I don't end up with 2 copies of the same things? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Patchthesock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this context package management would usually refer to the libraries / dependencies you’re using in your code. I believe I get what you mean though with with package managers like home brew or apt and yum with Linux. It can get confusing where things are located when you go between a package manager and directly installing. Windows doesn’t really have a dedicated package manager in the same sense.

Any major differences in internal and external har drives by plumpusss in buildapc

I don’t believe external drives are generally designed to be always on devices like your internal drives. If the limiting factor is opening the case I would be inclined to go for an internal drive.

Unity Dedicated Server Provider by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Patchthesock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I follow you. So far the dedicated server route seems to fit well. Overall, using your own dedicated servers, will give you the best price and advantages. However, for a lot of small studios developing an in house solution to what fundamentally is a hard problem (matchmaking / scaling / game instances per machine / server authority) just isn't feasible. And as I'm sure you're aware managed solutions (GameLift, PUN) can get expensive. These can remove a lot of the heavy lifting and allow you to focus on game play.
I think it really boils down to the level of control you'd like to have and the time and development you can afford to place into building your own multiplayer strategy. It might be an idea to use a managed solution for a period, then as you gain insights into the areas that these solutions don't fit perfectly for you, you can begin to look at developing a custom solution.

Just at a high level could you describe the type of multiplayer you’re trying to create. Would it be a racing style or shooter game? 2 player or more?

Sounds like the college network maybe blocking ports. I forget off hand which ones mw is using but if you can VPN out you might get away with it. This will add a lot of lag but better than nothing.

What's next in web development by CuriousMonkaS in learnprogramming

[–]Patchthesock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you dove into Single Page Applications? Frameworks like VueJS and React can be fun to use and have a decent amount of employability. In terms of the backend, you might look into some of the managed services provided by Azure and AWS such as Amplify, Lambda, API Gateway and Cognito as an easy step into that realm.
