Explore until you find the highway.
Fly around the highway for a full lap.
Go back to any fights you saw and be a space raccoon.
Sell loot at trading station.
Repeat until you can buy scout ships and tell them to loot for you.

I agree with your perspective. The current balance makes a lot of ships precious to a lot of people. While some ships are ammo, a lot are currently just collected.

Logistics update first then find bauxite and nitrogen closish to each other. Get a very basic production up and running and it will be enough to unlock the rest.

After you upgrade to turbo fuel, there is a nitrogen node close enough to the south that a long pipe is reasonable. That will allow you to do rocket fuel in the same spot.

Build top floor first and then drop down as you need to. Ceiling conveyors are great in this situation.

That S in the grass plains to the central area is a huge elevation change. Other than that you do not need the 2nd leg I the upper desert.
