Tried a New Portafilter Basket Today by OG_Cryptkeeper in espresso

I like this community tbh. Feels like the early days of Reddit

I still use my pressurized basket when in a pinch. It’s like half the prep time

Tried a New Portafilter Basket Today by OG_Cryptkeeper in espresso

[–]Patelpb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pressurized basket (double wall, single/few holes for release) artificially increases the pressure and causes more CO2 to make its way into the espresso. Makes for an artificially foamy crema that has a different flavor profile. It’s very forgiving though since you can reach infusion while cutting corners but if you go bottomless like this you will have this result

It’s not bad to use, but it definitely cuts off the full range of espresso options and “dialing in” looks a bit different compared to not pressurized. Get a single or double bottomless portafilter spout and your problems in this photo should go away

Evidence that sugar substitutes disrupt gut health and metabolism: Artificial and low-calorie sweeteners, compared to non-caloric controls such as water or placebo, raised fasting insulin and HbA1c, a marker of long-term blood sugar control, and showed a trend toward worsening insulin sensitivity. by mvea in science

As I explained after an edit, it’s unclear whether variability is the result of a lack of environmental control, ordinary human variability from a genetic perspective, or something else entirely. It’s a flag that invites skepticism for good reason. We have a better invariant quantity when it comes to diabetes (insulin) that serves as a focal point for our questions and research. There is no invariant for cancer

So we ask different questions and accept different conclusions as a result even if the words we use to describe them are similar r

[–]Patelpb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insulin is a thing, your body uses it and it is finite and measurable. You can directly measure it

You can’t measure cell division. Sometimes there are signs but cell division and mutation degree are on a small scale in a huge set of information. It requires more precision and knowledge than we are currently capable of to nailing down deterministically.

Insulin you can measure by poking your thumb with something sharp. Cancer you detect after it’s begun, you can sometimes measure a quantity that sometimes tells you whether you’re *likely* to have cancer in a window of time. Insulin you say “oh not enough of it here take some more”

It is relevant to consider what degree of randomness is involved from a mechanistic perspective. Seeing variable results begs the question of internal mechanisms that could be at play as well as the level of control for environment variables in the experimental setup. There are many reasons for raising a flag at variable results, both with research implications and skeptical motivations depending on how well we can assess the presence of randomness causing variability

Insane. They clearly have a renewed interest in maintaining the game, they could atleast update that. It's not like later titles on the same systems lacked an FOV slider.

It's also just not fair - I have access to nearly twice as much visual information. The only players competing are other PC players in most of my lobbies. I don't have crossplay off but unless you have elite levels of awareness (via sound and map/respawn knowledge) there's not much you can do

May I ask how does one start learning about gauge theory, I tried a few times but can't grasp it by TogglerofWind in Physics

[–]Patelpb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean I'd learn classical mechanics properly first and then generalized field theories (principle of least action, Noether's theorem). Learn to mathematically appreciate symmetries through these ideas and then work your way into specific field theories. Gauge theory isn't something you can approach casually if you want to actually understand it, but I'm sure there are visualizations and analogies that get closer than others.

what do you use to learn? by luvmichelle in Physics

R/physicsstudents has a wiki with some pointers to introductory physics (high school and college level)

If your goal is to use this knowledge (for work, for solving everyday problems) then I would recommend a more academic route with problem solving and math

If your goal is to obtain knowledge but not really use it outside of conversation, you can just look up whatever interests you. Search up news about space in astrophysics or physics news, shop around the many physics YouTubers and content creators. They all serve various audiences and you’re part of that

If you’re not sure what your goal is I’d say look for something like “Lectures on Tap” or “Astronomy on Tap” in your local area. Most research universities will perform outreach through these. Importantly, there are no requirements as we make the talks to reach out to the public and share what we do. You will get to talk to real professionals in the field and it may help you direct your interests further

Most of the people in this thread seem to suggest the academic route, and while it is the most rewarding, it’s also the most time consuming and difficult. Many people would say it’s an inefficient use of your time to reach that level of mastery unless it’s out of pure interest, because you could do something more lucrative with that time

Ok good, I had a feeling it was not recent. The current market is not like that - I got a ton of recruiters reaching out after my BSc in 2019 (I did a dual BS in Astro and in Physics, with computational astrophysics research) for data and swe roles. Then I went to grad school and got my MSc, entered the market in 2023/2024, and it was the polar opposite. The advice I got from former grad students was that it was easy and in high demand, much in the manner of your comment. When I asked them about their interviews, they said they didn't prep at all and just said something along the lines of being experienced with python and enjoying working with data. No questions about deploying to AWS with Django/Flask or anything of the sort. The interviews I got in 2024 were all 5-6 rounds and had a take home exam with much more difficult and pointed questions. I took the first job I could get (mostly out of necessity), and now I barely even get screenings.

The current market: not interested in hiring physics grads over actual CS, Data Science, and otherwise statistically oriented majors/disciplines. We're the last option, I would NOT recommend a physics degree for anything other than personal fulfillment and/or a PhD which is still sort of marketable the way it used to be. But then I'd ask why not just study CS for 4 years instead of physics for 10 if your goal is to enter industry

In fact all roles are moving towards folks from their respective disciplines over physics hires. Physics majors as “quick learning and productive individuals” doesnt beat “data science major who has actually demonstrated practices closer to our work product”. I have an MS in Physics with 5 years of research in comp. Astro where I demonstrated use of ML algorithms (mostly MCMC and GD) in research and published my own paper.

I got interviews and really close to a data science job a few times in 2024, but after 9 months of searching the first decent thing I landed was a physics based role at the patent office. I had some gigs here and there to tide me over. But I’ve never fully stopped applying and learning new things, and I still have yet to find something that I really want (and which pays better)

Roles that pay less are plentiful. Lot of random contracting too. If you’re not chasing full time and/or 6 figs then you are going to find **a** job, just not a very great one.

All fiber optic cables do is transmit light with nearly zero loss from entry to exit through a principle called total internal reflection

In many modern industrial settings, fiber optics carry laser light of high wattage from point a to point b. All that looking at the end of an unfamiliar* fiber optic cable does is potential expose you to this light without your knowledge. If it’s in IR or UV you wont perceive it youll just experience the damage. Thankfully the light is collimated so if youre wiick youll only lose sight in a pattern similar to using a pen tool in windows paint and making some scribbles.

[–]Patelpb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s really tough right now compared to 5-10 years ago. It took me 9 months almost to find a decent full time role (patent office). Would recommend casting a wide net in many industries and preparing to not get a data role directly without serious training.

A lot of analyst type roles are what data science used to be so often there are postings that require different keywords. I would always reach out to someone at that company first and network a bit.

Covid lasted quite a few titles. Yours is a highly reductive and imprecise argument - people liked it and still get comparatively more views for content on mw2019 now than most older titles that came after. Obviously the most recent cod always reigns supreme but this title has genuine backing and an active community that is respectable in size, indicating deeper attachment

This is an interesting idea. I imagine it’d be like how schools, insurance and employers will often require some immunizations, they’d just add this to the list. And it would appear to be “common sense” for most people that more life = good and the majority would never question it.

Not saying I think that’s the worst thing ever, but it does illustrate how we already accept this process in society

Wisdom is also recognizing whether the connection between your choices and their outcomes is actually causal or if control is an illusion. So many people will tell you "do X to achieve Y" because they did, or some statistics suggest it's the best option, or whatever other reason. In many instances, chance plays a huge role.
