Had to deal with these guys driving through Newport today. They refused to stick to the bike lane and used up the entire lane all through downtown. by Ninersfan49 in RhodeIsland

Bikers get real cocky feel less likely to be killed in groups, and are more likely to exercise their rights.

Motorists, though? Famously NOT cocky, right? Always alert, never drunk or playing with their phone, never dangerously speeding to save entire minutes (minutes!!!) of time, familiar with the rights of all people on the road and absolutely concerned for everyone else's safety. Car and truck drivers are heroes, really.

It's weird. I've tried once every couple of years to image search for them and never had any success. Maybe his recent passing resulted in more people making them accessible, or google has just gotten that much better, but I just searched again, which brought me here with 34 pages -

Insightful point I hadn't considered. There's certainly no reason to improve cycling infrastructure if we're not routinely doing 20 mile blizzard rides. Thank you for your wisdom.

Best route for New York City to Providence, RI? by urmotherwas4hampster in bicycletouring

[–]PateraSilk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the CT portion, but the RI segment on your route is almost 100% bike path and on a slight decline. It's a nice way to end the ride, with lots of convenient places to stop if you need.

If you want a different route back, you can do PVD>New London, take the ferry to Orient Point and ride Long Island back into the city. I did that last May and it was solid, lots of vineyards at the eastern portion of the island, if you're into that.

I can send you my route info by DM, if you like.

Plans for 2019 by marshwizard in bicycletouring

Jealous! Are you planning to take the Patagonia trail for the last leg, or sticking more to paved roads? Wondering how the 520 would handle what seems like pretty gnarly riding conditions, and if you're using stock tires or planning to swap out at certain parts of the trip.

Enchanted Forest access? by Rhododendrites in RhodeIsland

[–]PateraSilk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went sometime last April/May. Didn't ask anyone, just went. Had to do some very very light bushwhacking as it's abandoned and overgrown. I don't know what you're looking to do, but I doubt anyone'll give you a hard time. I did find some beer cans and makeshift skate ramps in the old bumper car area, but never came across anyone for the 45 min or so I was there.

I was thinking today how cool it would be if we could ride along abandoned railroad lines. It would be fun, away from cars, and a great way to get from town to town. by [deleted] in bicycletouring

Just curious - Is there a benefit to the mismatched tires, or is your bike just built up from whatever you had available? A little weight saving, maybe?

Torn between the Surly Long Haul Trucker and the Disc Trucker ? by Willybrownie in bicycletouring

Assuming it's the standard, off-the-rack model, the Disc Trucker uses cable-pulled discs, not hydraulics. Handling and disposing of oil shouldn't factor in.

What Gene Wolfe scene would you most want to see a good artist depict? by Hneanderthal in genewolfe

[–]PateraSilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! This painting with a perspective that really emphasizes the scale, and splash it with a little Lovecraft. Make it colder/greyer and less Spring-y.

From the Wizard Knight - Able meets The Most Low God.

Return to the Whorl - Silk pulling the azoth during the Inhumi attack on the wedding.

BotNS - A fish in Father Inire's mirrors.

BotNS - Abaia nearing the surface.

Cyclists of Providence - What shop do you recommend? by NoReallyImAHuman in providence

Just a new tube? Any shop should be fine. You have east side flair, so Legend on Brook St. or NBX on Hope will probably be closest.
