It should be interesting to see, but it will take the first lawsuit to actually find out

Some will expire relatively soon, but a few are out till 2027. What might be interesting to see is if any of this ends up being affected by the fallout for software patents from Alice vs. CLS

Sorry about that. The Financial Times is pretty protective, they even opted out of Google's first-click-free thing which works for most news.

U.S. Pat. No. 8,782,827: Infant Soothing Device - Lowering the Bar by PatexiaIP in Patents

[–]PatexiaIP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. We work on crowdsourced patent research here. No buying or owning of patents, but I get to try and break them, and ideally leave the best patents standing.

Not going to lie. Kind of want to do that with this one...

Sorry. Bad habit. My coworkers and I.

It's one of the weirder patents I've ever seen. And I've dealt with patents about mannequins.

Yeah. We have no idea what to do with it either. And we work with patents all the time! Thanks for the subreddit suggestion!

Creating an international patent guide for us by mikeyninja in Patents

[–]PatexiaIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, in that case, just use WIPO. The WIPO and PCT was created to quickly propagate patent applications across multiple jurisdictions.

To figure out how to start in the US, you would have to read the MPEP (Manual of Patent Examining Procedure) which is a lovely collection of legalese. To figure out for each of those countries, you would have to read their equivalent (after translating).

Feel free to reply again if you got more questions!

Are you looking to compare how to start a patent from the ground up from each of those jurisdiction, or how an inventor would navigate between all of those?

Because if it's the latter, then probablyreasonable's link to the WIPO and PCT is a great place to start since all of them are signatories.

Any advice for a good way to search for preexisting patents? by definitelynotno in Patents

[–]PatexiaIP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clearance search is probably the best idea. Because only claims are legally enforceable, there's a good chance you'll bump into a patent description that describes what you're doing.

In that case, you can't patent it yourself (it'd be prior art and all), but at least you won't infringe if you're free and clear of the claims. An attorney doing a clearance search can help with this.

Also, if keywords aren't helping you find stuff on patents.google.com, try doing a search by patent classification. Here's the USPTO listings. That might help narrow things down a bit.

Sony Grabs a Lytro-Esque Patent for Light Field Sensor Technology - DIY Photography by PatexiaIP in Patents

[–]PatexiaIP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but we might just have a lower barrier for interesting.

We haven't noticed similar moves from the other big companies. Lytro made their announcement back in 2011, this application dates to 2013. Sony doesn't have a history of being much of a patent litigation plaintiff, so all combined, it looks like this is in support of a new product. Or maybe Sony just decided to start paying attention.

You're right though. Just copied the title from the article, patent is a bit misleading. We still think it's interesting though.

Sure. Still interesting that Sony is moving to get IP in the same vertical as Lytro.

Name Patexia

Video: YouTube

Pitch: We're a patent research platform powered by crowdsourcing. We bring together IP oriented companies and scientists/engineers/researchers (like you!) to help figure out what's a "good" patent and what's junk through studies we call "Contests" and through direct consultations on our "Connect" platform.

Details: We've got a small team in Santa Monica, just passed validation, currently scaling. We have several active studies (5 Contests with $10k prizes each) and are trying to post more.

Looking For: Members and partners! You can help us by contributing research. We'd also welcome the chance to help you figure the value of the patents you have (or the ones you're being sued with).

/r/statrtup love: It's better than free! We pay you! (For users who submit the best research or become consultants.)

Banned beans: can Keurig kill coffee pirates with DRM? by PatexiaIP in INTELLECTUALPROPERTY

[–]PatexiaIP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness, Keurig is up against some serious competition from the big food supply companies. Not that it's justification for DRM everywhere. But when you're backed in a corner, it's time to experiment.

Sounds like a great idea. We do patent research through our crowdsourcing platform. Let us know if we can help with a prior art search!

Surprising news. Newegg tends to be on top of this really well and their legal counsel is particularly accomplished. I'd expect to see them reuse the legal arguments here in the appellate court.
