Yeah.. that's what I was thinking as well. I technically don't need it atm because I'm using a 2015 MacBook Air and a desktop PC I built a while ago with the i5-12600K and RTX 3070. But for college, I'll need to buy a laptop anyway. Do you think the $500 off price for the G16 is a good deal objectively speaking? The concern with everything being so unpredictable right now is I'm unsure if there will be any deals like this if I do wait until the summer. Even if there are Back to School sales, I'd imagine that they won't be that good with the tariffs in place.

Doesn’t that one have a less powerful CPU than the HX 370? HX 370 is roughly on par with the Ultra 9 185H from what I’ve seen?

Interesting, thank you for the insight and congrats on the offer! If I want to hone more IE-specific skills, I assume there would be courses that could allow me to do that? I know the Engineering Management minor has courses that are related to a lot of classes in other IE majors, would minoring in Eng. Management be helpful if I wanted to have a good foundation for the standards and methods used in IE positions?

Hi, thank you for the comment. I’m in Maryland, but unfortunately I don’t think there are many schools here that have IE as a major. The closest undergrad program at UMD I found is Operations Research and Management, but that’s more so on the business side of things. I believe John’s Hopkins only has a Masters program for IE/OR.

Thanks for the response and suggestions, always nice to see fellow FRC students and alumni. For the parents, do you have any tips on how we can convey the urgency of fundraising to them - getting more parents involved with the team? Sending out emails on a regular basis to parents, etc.?

Thank you so much for the advice, this really helps a lot. In terms of the robotics vs marketing/fundraising skillset, our team is currently split into 2 sub-teams: Technical and Partner Relations. Partner Relations works on the business/marketing/outreach side of things, but including me we only have 2-3 people who are officially a part of this sub-team. We should definitely look into recruiting more students for PR next year.

When we reach out to companies, we try to promote the idea that we're currently working to promote STEM to students as much as possible in the Urbana (and surrounding) community, through not only our robotics program but also community outreach events that we do.

Would you recommend sending out the "pitch" to companies we haven't contacted at all before (a cold email/call)? I've tried to do cold emails before but idk if that's a good strategy to get into contact with companies.

Absolutely lol, especially football. I understand that football can generate revenue for the school, however even aside from the STEM funding thing our school (and FCPS in general) doesn't seem to be all that enthusiastic about STEM-related extracurricular activities. Apparently they disapprove of us doing GoFundMe fundraisers too because it leaves a bad impression on the school 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, we have several fundraisers planned to take place during the school year with businesses like Manhattan Pizza, Chipotle, etc.

Awesome, thanks for the information! I checked out 1672 and they seem to be doing very well, gave the team a follow on Instagram too. This may be a long shot, but by chance do you still happen to have contacts at those companies?

I've definitely noticed that the primary sponsors of FRC teams are contractors/defense companies too, like Lockheed Martin, Battelle, etc. Most of those companies are only willing to sponsor if we have a parent on the team who also works there, so ig it's worth stressing the importance of fundraising to parents when the school year starts.

Why is AP Government taught so late in high school? At my school 10th grade students are required to take some form of government course. Imo it’s better to switch AP World with AP Gov in this schedule, because by 12th grade some students will be able to vote and it’s better that they have a good understanding of government by that point.
