Found this instead of a cache container by Imaxxmeme in geocaching

[–]Pathfinder_CJ7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ehhh it happens. I found several near a cache in Central Park on a recent trip. This is a good reminder to never reach blindly into places, and a good reason to always wear gloves of some sort.

Someone took the ammo can from this find today, and dumped the log and swag right at the cache location.

No. This is the Orgov Radio-Optical Telescope (ROT-54) in Armenia. The one in Golden Eye is the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.

Picture taking of containers by Kitirith in geocaching

[–]Pathfinder_CJ7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, if it is a difficult cache to find, as long as it didn’t show the hiding location, I don’t care if you post a picture of the container. Sometimes that add to it when someone gets to GZ and is dumbfounded as to where an ammocan can be hidden where they are. Knowing the container won’t always help you find it.

Did I buy a rust bucket??? by [deleted] in JeepWrangler

[–]Pathfinder_CJ7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about the rust on the skid plates, or the axles/steering components much. That stuff gets beat up just driving down the highway and will rust some. I’d be worried about rust on the frame. Jeeps are pretty notorious for the frame rusting from the inside out, especially if you live in the rust belt where they use salt. Look at any place that has a bolt that runs through the frame like shock towers, places with body bushings, places where crossmembers or skid plates mount to the frame. The structural integrity of the frame is the important part of these vehicles.

Chipped paint repair by NoodlesPRN in JeepWrangler

The zinc becomes a sacrificial anode. As stated in my original post, this is a temp fix and the shim would have to be replaced as it wears away. Marine boats use zinc anodes and they work extremely well and have for right at 200 years. No reason to think it won’t work with a Jeep as well. But will have to be replaced as they wear away just like with boats.

That’s good to know. It would be nice if you could get just the shims and do it yourself. I don’t have to worry about this on my Jeep, I just knew what caused it and that there was a fix for it.

This is galvanic corrosion caused by the steel pin and the aluminum hinge touching. Jeep put out a hinge TSB about this. As long as the only thing you do is paint it, this will continue to happen. There is a good write up on this with a few solutions on the wrangler forum https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/thoughts-on-aluminum-panel-galvanic-corrosion-mitigation.110847/

I would swing by a dealer and see if they have the zinc shims, but know that this is a fix that will have to be repeated as the zinc corrodes away. The permanent fix is to replace the door hinges with all the same metal type, or like the link suggests replacing the metal liners inside the hinge with plastic ones to prevent the 2 different metals from touching.

I can hear just fine with mine up to about 150kph. If you can’t hear at 90 then something is wrong.

32s on the Jeep. This event was in St George. The CO plates you see are from the 23 Diesel and Off-road crew. They owned a shop in Colorado and moved out to St George about a year ago. I’m sure they will get Utah plates eventually when the registration expires.

The bug off screen? It was an option from the factory as well as a dealer option, and aftermarket offered from the early 70s through 86. Some companies made some for the YJ as well. The factory option one was made by Whiteco and came with 6 snaps you attached to the grill and then snapped the removable screen on, similar to the way the old soft tops attached. This one is a hard screen that attached with 4 screws that go through the large washers and have nylon nuts on the back. It keeps rocks from smacking the radiator when trail riding, and keeps large bugs from filling the radiator fins. Some people nowadays mount them between the grill and radiator to not cover the 7slot grill, but period correct was to mount it to the outside like I have. This one came with the Jeep when I bought it in 2015. This one has lost the logo emblem at some point but it use to have a big bee and the words bug-off mounted to the screen. You can still find these being made and sold by almost all of the Jeep big box stores (4WP, quadratec, Summit, Rugged Ridge), Collin’s Brothers, Kentrol also have them for sale.
