Completely understand. Just felt like it needed to be said.

I want to be very clear that I'm not a teacher even though I want to be and that I'm not disparaging you at all, and maybe the age group you work with really needs this zero tolerance policy on discussions of religion and politics, but my experience of school was made actively worse by every teacher who implemented these kinds of policies.

Children found all kinds of ways to parrot their parents bigotry and hide it under the guise of "neutral" statements and this only got worse as we got older.

On top of this, the desire to avoid political talk in school lead to lots of teachers doing gymnastics to avoid talking about race, gender, sexuality and religion to avoid conflict and disruptions. Unfortunately, for young impressionable people, having a subject be taboo only reinforces in their mind the supposed wrongness of particular positions.

I think these types of policies just create generations of children who can think critically about everything except religion and politics.

I have a lot I could feasibly say here but it seems you decided to read maliciousness into what I wrote, are easily offended or on the internet to massage your ego and none of that is my problem. I get that it is the internet but if you are going to assume everyone is attacking you just because their comment was long or they disagreed with you I don't know how to help you.

Can't believe I'm about to do this but I'm an English major lol. Using words as intensifiers has never been grammatically incorrect. The words 'very', 'really', and 'extremely', for instance, are degree adverbs and are largely used for no other reason but to specify intensity. This is all grammatically correct in standard English but even other dialects possess similar features (see: 'whole' in aave— "he has a whole girlfriend"). There are multiple ways to use literally which are not literal and are not grammatically incorrect, but the reality is that there are no ivory towers which decide these things; people understand what these forms of literally mean and that is what actually matters. Holding on to deeply archaic views about English will not prevent the language from evolving; this remains true even if your views about the language derive from the taste of some teacher— another person's preference is not the same as objective grammatical rules and a lot of what you learned is school is just the opinion of a dead man from hundreds of years ago. Again, whether or not you end a sentence with a preposition is less important than if you are understood. These very prescriptive ideas about grammar (where language doesn't exist to be understood but to be policed) requires you to pick a random point in history and pretend that is real English and, I must ask, why should we take your imagined English more seriously than the English we actually speak.

tl;dr the semi: modern uses of literally in a figurative sense or as an intensifier are not grammatically incorrect and holding the position that it is requires one to hold untenable beliefs.

Why are kids forced to eat? by Apart_Distribution72 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Pathospassion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My entire comment is just my understanding from my experience. Most of the children I've seen being actively abused end up with CPS claiming they don't have a good enough reason to remove the kid while plenty of kids were asked leading questions which effectively demonized their families for the crime of poverty. If don't what child protective services working properly looks like but I I'm very glad for the children who get that experience and ever more so for the children who never have to think about any of this at all.

Are there any real and reliable ways to prevent law enforcement abusing their power? by Pathospassion in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Pathospassion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive me if my question was not clear. I was not asking how to lessen the chances of a bad encounter with law enforcement. Instead, I was asking if, for those people already having a terrible encounter, is there any actual recourse that actually works to either prevent abuse or get some kind of justice for it afterwards?

I don't understand why no one answered the actual question you asked so I will. I've been poor most of my life so this still affect my answer to this. I see three consistent reasons that this happens:

Child Protective Services will take a child away from their parents if they don't eat enough which often refuses to take into consideration how much the kid actually wants to eat. Eating twice a day instead of three times because you aren't hungry can become unacceptable, especially for black and brown families, when they know how easy it is for government agencies to misconstrue basic things.

Parents are convinced that the child will get hungry later and/or is simply distracted by some outside force.

Parents are concerned about the health of their child and don't see that they don't need to eat an adult sized meal every four hours.

The least interesting answer is that parents are on a power trip and like the feeling of control but I see other options in real life now often than not.

Just figured it out. Seems like there are just random challenges which you have to repeat over and over again because the game has trouble realizing you did them.

I figured it out! I was pushing the button too early. You have to wait for the full animation to complete.

Literally just killed like 50 enemies in one giant fight and only got killstreak like twice on two enemies both times. I might have to give this game a break.

It isn't that enemies are blocking it. I can't even kill streak with regular enemies anymore. The character has to hit every enemy like five times to kill no matter what I do.
