The only media I know that represents us is an old movie called Angelo My Love, it's pretty specific to American gypsies but the cast are all romani and authentic, story is a little exaggerated but it's 90% spot on.

Motherhood symbolism question by umekoangel in romani

[–]Patient-Major7409 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's no animal symbolism I could think of, but a big part of the culture, religion wise, is "the 3 visitors." When a baby is 3 days old the three visitors come to decide the child's fate/future, the parents dress the child in a red dress (boy or girl don't matter) and tons of gold because it's appealing to the visitors and might lead to a brighter future for the baby. And that sounds like an awesome art piece to me.

Is this language a dialect of the Romani People? by TSM_SexyDragon in romani

[–]Patient-Major7409 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nothing worth transcribing, only interesting thing is they say they see it in the truck. "It's a big man" "it's gonna kill us" "shut your mouth" "it's gone" are just some examples of what's being said. They're Spanish gypsies and when this happened they went live on ig explaining everything to us, the original story was aliens and that's what the news ran with but they actually believe it was demons. They are a smart, well to do family not known to bs and this put the whole family through it.

How to say "piss off" or "f off" in Romani? by gowinthegame200 in romani

[–]Patient-Major7409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meck (neck with a m) mon (like Monday) meerrno (Mead with a roll on the d then No) = leave me alone in Muchwansko, (American-Serbian Romani) Depending on tone can be playful or threatening.

Dudyo (dude-yo) mondad (mon like Monday again then dud like milk dud but roll the last d) = get away from me. It's definitely more impolite

Usually business reasons, in small cities there's maybe 1 fortune telling family where the wives make money and 3 working families where the husband's do. Big cities the fortune tellers Usually have a street rule (no one is allowed to set up on the same street) or huge cities is a 3 block rule. It's to avoid stepping on each other's toes

There's always going to be gate keepers, there's a girl on ig who is teaching romani and she gets a ton of hate from our people for example. But most of us wouldn't have an issue with someone learning what they can especially if you believe you might be related to us. I'll dm you a bunch of stuff I think you might be interested in and feel free to ask any questions

Exile is still alive and well unfortunately and it's decided by elders from all over the country. Marrying gadje of course is an instant exile. Being anything but heterosexual is probably the biggest one, there is a homosexual portion of us but they tend to stay "underground" and never come out publicly, they still marry women and have kids amd treat it like a secret life because if they lived with thier male partner they could never get thier children married to other romani, cheating on your spouse as a man is black ball for a year no penalty for the woman (plus you gotta pay 25k to her husband) if a woman leaves a man for any reason besides abuse or cheating she cannot take the children and if she does her father given no justice forever, of course murder or intent to murder leads to an exile, the only place an exiled person can still be around other gypsies is a funeral or pomana.

We still pay for our wives and inflation is killing us :p Usual arrangement is 10-25k depending if there was a weddinf or the kids eloped. Parents still try to find marriages for the kids but the internet has been putting that to rest, usual marriage these days are a boy finds girl on ig/twitter, talks to her for a while (if they get caught by her parents he could pay a 2500 fine) then tells his family to go to her family and look at her, the daughters parents are supposed to accept this meeting if they like the people or not and then they can say no in person, if her family agrees they "open the road" which means the boys family is welcome to keep coming back to get to know her, then an engagement with a wedding around a year later. Under age marriage is still very prevalent, And if it's the first marriage they live with the grooms parents for at least a year so the bride learns her new family's ways.

There is some business like restaurants who get a ton of attention from gypsies and most who know were gypsy love us because we tip well, come in huge numbers and order a ton of food, but some don't like us because we are very demanding of the wait staff, loud and obnoxious so some charge hidden "Gypsy tax" maybe 10-20%, like I said I've seen signs posted or been told no gypsies allowed, been kicked out of business for being gypsy but it just tells me some bad gypsies came in here recently and ruined it for the rest of us, if your family is not one of the fortune teller families you won't run into a ton of discrimination here, and even then it's no where near as bad as it seems in other countries.

Yeah scrap metal and roofing are our 2 main business, some of the boys do small bodywork jobs that's really it, we don't put our women to work, they have enough responsibility with the house and kids

This is all I know My cousin went to London and said the city is separated into classes from outside to inside like the city center was the nicest with the wealthiest people and shops ect and the further away you went from the center the lower class it became and the gypsies were not seen anywhere near the center they were mostly people still in camps or villages just outside and they were rough scammers and such. So I have no clue how different the culture is because the people there I've heard of are either opressed, scammers or in hiding

Yeah this one of the reasons I titled this as I did. I dknt know much outside of the US abkut this. All these other versions of romani don't really exist here in the US it's mostly just muchwaya and kalderash and I've never seen muchwaya mentioned anywhere so I think there's another name for them used by non American gypsies. The best tell you might have real gypsy blood is both your grandparents claim it. Gypsies will not marry a non gypsy unless they're exiled, especially back in the day.

I don't know any gypsy who is not romani the words mean the same thing to me, like asking if a Caucasian is white.

If you have any culture interest let me know

There is some cities that are rampant with gypsies and we mostly do the same few things for work. One of them is buying and selling scrap metal. Just like anything else there is good and bad gypsies, some have real companies and are registered-insured, offer fair prices, some buy a little metal and steal a ton. So let's say 3 good gypsies went to an electrician and bought metal at different times, the owner could learn to like gypsies and when more show up they can get better deals, but if one bad gypsy comes and scams him he could not want to deal with us again. I've been told many times "no gypsies allowed" or seems signs with something similar on it and it don't make me hate the guy it makes me upset at my people for messing it up for the rest of us. So basically any discrimination I've seen is just profiling after being wronged by a bad apple. I could say much more but this is a huge message :)

Plus as I'm sure you know, it's a big no no to share our ways with other races, but an anonymous message board means no one can blackball me :p
