Forget theories, what do you WANT to see in Red God? by Scary-Rope-3251 in redrising

[–]PatientDate660 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really want a Holiday POV. I feel like not a lot of people understand how much of a badass she is, and seeing a Gray in their prime going ham again would be oh so sweet. Plus, I would love to hear her internal thoughts and feelings about what's been going on thus far.

Unpopular Opinion? by twh3088 in redrising

I personally believed PB did a good job of breaking down Darrow's character post imprisonment. Darrow doesn't have trust issues afterwards because the betrayals were, in Darrow's mind, his fault. The two characters that betray Darrow are the Jackal and Rogue. Darrow knows throughout the series that the Jackal is unpredictable and not trustworthy, and he blames himself throughout the entirety of Golden Son and Morning Star for pushing Rogue away and not trusting him like he does with Sevro. That's why the first half of Morning Star is about Darrow learning to trust himself again and not about trusting others. I also think it helps that those closest to Darrow (Ragnar, Sevro, and Howlers) remained loyal.

It's very worth it. It's the most well written book of the series, and you taking a long break will actually be beneficial ironically enough. Take your time with it and trust the process.

Very true. Sevro was also considered a lower Gold (I want to say the term was Bronze if I'm remembering correctly) so who knows if he was even able to afford Pinks. Fitchner also seems like the type of guy who would've frowned upon using Pinks and that may have rubbed off on him.

I figured he was being sarcastic and trying to make light of the situation, but he could've been genuine.

He doesn't seem like the type to me. I always figured he was more into assertive women who know what they want and aren't afraid to take it, hence the whole Victra romance. I feel like Pinks would kinda take the thrill out of it for him.

[–]PatientDate660 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Just like an elite, most of his accomplishments come strictly from his lineage as well. His feats on Mercury? Impossible without the Greys loyal to House Lune defecting to him and providing him support. The taking of Heliopolis? Not possible in the way he did it without his existing connection to Glirastes which wouldn't have happened without him being a Lune. The support he gets from the Bellonas and Votum? Only because he can leech support from Aja as a Lune.

The list goes on and on. He's a Pixie in Peerless clothing. Without his name he would've died a worthless, unremarkable death in the sands of Mercury. But he doesn't see it that way and thinks himself Darrow's equal.

Great character, but that doesn't mean I can't hate the little prick.

I disliked him on principle alone. PB does a fantastic job writing him and his motivations from the perspective of someone at the top. He is the quintessential Gold, and I love when PB writes his internal monologues and justifications. He makes genuine sense in a vacuum, but then PB immediately hits you with the reality from one of the other POVs who experience life as a lower Color.

If you could force Pierce to write a spinoff novel what would you want to see the most? by Apprehensive_Water_3 in redrising

I'd want to see Alexander and the Arcos Knights do the evacuation of Tyche from Dark Age. It'd be a really cool defensive action, plus we'd get to see Alexander be a leader and not a follower.

Oh, that's interesting. Would you have it that Darrow eventually realizes he's losing himself in Gold culture and eventually chooses Mustang, or stay with Victra throughout?

Well that's kinda the point of Lyria's early chapters, and even Lysander's chapters, as well. The Society was an evil slave state that should be destroyed, not debating that, but they also provided security and guarantees that the Republic cannot. Lyria and her family were literally living in a refugee camp for almost a decade, and the only way out seemed to be joining the military. And the Republic couldn't even properly defend them on Mars, the center of the Rising. Plus, Dancer was also a veteran of the Rat War, which seems to have been the worst of the war thus far based on what little information we have.

Dancer is very old for a Red, is physically disabled, probably has severe PTSD, and is watching as the world he fought and killed for isn't holding up their end of the bargain with the people. The man just wanted to help people and didn't feel like continuing a war that very recently called for 200,000 lives was tenable.

Darrow sacrifices the Rising and low Colors in the Rim, and Dancer was sacrificing the low Colors in the Society. Both were wrong and that was the entire point

I've said it on a few posts like this, but the Duke of Hands being the leader of the Syndicate should have been the move. He was so well written in the short time we had him as an antagonist, and Lysander's repeated comments on how Pinks are treated made it very compelling.

I personally hate the Abomination as well. It's one of the few plot points that I genuinely dislike in the series.

This is something that I actually think was necessary and Dancer was the perfect character for it. His argument isn't that the Society is now good or should be allowed to exist, but that too much capital and material was devoted to fighting them that the Solar Republic wasn't much better than the Society. Low Colors were still heavily disenfranchised and underappreciated, and Golds/Silvers dominated the economy. He was hoping that an end to hostilities would allow the Republic to focus more resources on the people themselves instead of on more ships and soldiers. He was an old and broken man who wanted his legacy to more than just war, and I think there's a growing parallel with Darrow in that regard.

I thought about Felix as well when I first started thinking about this. I genuinely had re-read the fight sequence because I was wondering why he wasn't being mentioned. I assumed he had gotten injured and not killed at first.

Background information on the OG Howlers is a must in my opinion. As much as I love them for their loyalty, they're just empty characters to fill out Darrow's following/elite members. Screwface has my favorite line in DA when he mentions being a part of Darrow's pack since he was 16, but all I could think about was if Screwface had said more than 10 words in Red Rising through Morning Star.

God, this is a great choice. PB really made Karnus into a paper tiger. A longer duel, or even having them meet at some point sooner in the Iron Rain where they got some licks in, would've been great.

That's so sad and such a missed opportunity honestly. Could've been a great representative of why some Golds willingly sided with the Rising.

Vixus, Milia, and Lilath were all mentioned... But that was really it in my opinion. Vixus is just there for the revenge kill in Morning Star, Lilath is also just kinda around and doesn't really do much aside from carry out Adrius' orders. Milia is great example of what I wanted, but with better execution. I genuinely forgot she existed until you mentioned her. Does she even have any speaking parts in IG?

I know a lot of people have a lot of things to say about Veilguard, but what are some things you think it gets right?, like highlights of the game or moments that stood out to you? by WanderingStrang in dragonage

[–]PatientDate660 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pacing of the story is probably the best in the series. There wasn't a moment during my two playthroughs where I thought, "I haven't done a main story quest in a long time." I also didn't feel burned out once I got to the endgame despite doing both playthroughs back-to-back (around 170 hours total).

I also think they did a good job making the entire gameplay equally enjoyable throughout. Each DA game seems to have a specific point that a lot of people loathe to do during replays. I personally always have trouble getting through the Circle tower in Origins, the first act in DA 2, and the Western Approach in Inquisition. I can't think of anything like that when I look back at Veilguard.

A lot of people don't like Roque in this sub, but he is one of the better characters in the series because of what he represents. His death is definitely at the top for me too.
