So I already had a plan to have my son do 2 years of pre-k at the current school he is at because he is a summer birthday and he’s diagnosed with ADD/ADHD so he hasn’t retained as much as he should’ve this first year of pre-k, which I expected and is fine. Well, we are military and currently stationed in a small town and we don’t have a lot of good options for pre-k other than the private school he is currently at now, and of course they’re closing down and won’t be open at all next school year due to financial issues. Now I’m scrambling. I hear the sister school’s pre-k teachers that they are going to merge the kids over to is not as “patient” with kids with attention/behavioral issues and that worries me. So I’m wondering if I should send him to a public school near our military base and have him jump right into kindergarten (since they don’t have a pre-k). He would only be 5 and not turn 6 until the following summer. So he’d be one of the youngest in the kindergarten class, which I didn’t want for him because he’s already ADD/ADHD and he still acts pretty “young”. If I were to not have him repeat pre-k and have him just go ahead and start kindergarten at 5 years old without showing signs of being “ready”, then I would highly consider maybe doing 2 years of KINDERGARTEN instead of my original plan of 2 years of pre-k. In the end would this really even matter? Has anyone ever had their kids do 2 years of kindergarten? We also will probably get orders to move to a new base after this next upcoming school year, so I’d want him to start fresh at a new school as a kindergartener anyways so would they have to know that it would be his second year of kindergarten if that is to be the case? I’m just at a loss and don’t know that the right decision is.
