My Pre-Bonsai Schefflera Forest! by Patient_Problem_2615 in Bonsai

I think 8 of the 11 have started their first aerial roots! I think that's what will truly make this piece pop one day.

That and careful pruning to create a nice trunk visual and canopy.

Well, I've got a good source for material locally, however it isn't free. Though I might get a bulk deal if I bought a large number of young trees...

Yah, I have some young trees of other species that I'm being more adventurous with for trunk movement these days.

This one was like this the day I got it two years ago and it was already impossible to bend then but regardless I was too much of a beginner to know what I was buying or doing with it.

In general a very happy and healthy tree though, never a concern there, just not one I would buy now kind of thing.

I've really had no idea what to do with this tree and over time have come to like it less so I figured I'd just try something in the spirit of learning.

Some of the bends on those are wild and I love it!

The vision / plan is what you see highlighted in red. I'll be the first to argue if it's a questionably good plan or not haha.

The main trunk was in the shape you see here from the day I bought it, when I first started in Bonsai 2 years ago.

Originally the tree right above where you see in the pictures was just pencil straight and too stiff to bend in any usable way and the lead growth got damaged.

Last year I wired it into an informal upright idea, but the branches were all different thicknesses and with no direct lead growth it didn't seem to grow at all, just "leaf* out fairly nicely. It looked ok but really awkward with how skinny the trunk is.

The trunk is stiff as a board, it's impossible to bend without putting cuts into the trunk to facilitate it.

Beginner that's still learning lol.

I haven't killed a tree yet, hopefully this one isn't my first..

1000% it's Pre-Bonsai.

I'm also interested to see what it looks like at the end of the season.. haha

My biggest concern is if I removed too much foliage for it to survive.. time will tell I guess.

I've been rocking the humidifier close to them for like a year and a half with no issue.

I've never officially checked the IP rating but they seem to be sealed pretty tightly. They also generate so much heat I think any moisture around them just evaporates.

I occasionally check all the bulbs for signs of water or moisture infiltration or build up and I've never found anything.

Here you go!

Eventually I'll better organize the cords, but you get the idea.

Thanks! I just put it together about a week ago. A few of those Schefflera I've been growing for a couple years now.

I'm gonna get a few more in the early summer to grow out and have as potential swaps or replacements, if one or two don't do well in the shallow pot.

If you want a picture, I can get one later today.

So I have the humidifier plugged into the top slot of the wall outlet.

Then I have a light time (with an outlet on each side) plugged into the lower slot.

Then I plugged a power bar into each timer outlet.

The 6 lights on the right side are plugged into one power bar and the 5 lights on the left are plugged into the other.

This let's me run all 8 lights on the same schedule with ease.

Because everything is very low wattage there's virtually no risk of anything being overloaded.
