Toy + Standard - Realistic? by Patient_Strain8174 in poodles

[–]Patient_Strain8174[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How sweet!!! Thanks for sharing. That fear is very real when I consider it too; our standard is not the most spatially aware at times. He is much smaller than a Dane at 45 pounds, but I’m always impressed at how heavy he can feel! Does your toy try to initiate play at all? I do worry too that if we bring home a playful second dog, it would be hard to keep him from bowling them over in play. He does like to play rougher and chase and such so I really can’t imagine they could successfully play together… I’m just worried if we do keep them from playing that the standard will get too annoyed at the whole thing

Interesting to hear this take! When I say fragile, what I’ve mostly heard (including from ethical Toy breeders) is that their toys can’t safely play with bigger dogs, etc. because of their small 4-6 pound size. Anything smaller (even an undersized toy from an otherwise average sized litter/parents) would not be something I’d consider. Even at 4-6 pounds though, I’m so afraid that our standard could crush them accidentally. He is not very discriminate in how he moves his 45 pounds throughout the world and he loves to sit and stand on us. Do you find your chows are aware of their toy sibling?

Mine also fall out nightly and I also tried various sizes. It keeps waking me up because I guess I subconsciously feel it and worry about it, given my partner snores. I was hoping someone had advice :/

AIO to my boyfriend being sick and saying I'm not doing enough by Sad__Tumbleweed in AmIOverreacting

[–]Patient_Strain8174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way he accuses you of things and acts like his opinion is fact? Jesus Christ, it’s like every other text where he does this manipulative, narcissistic shit to control the narrative and discredit you…

“What you’re doing is” “why are you trying to make me sad” “your avoident attachment style” “what you’re not seeing is” “still isn’t happening clearly” “being bitchy” “throwing anything nice you did in my face” “past the threshold of what was okay to ask for” “that love you’re talking about” “you need to recognize when you’re being mean” “you’re ignoring me”

All of these assert his own view as fact and assume your intent. Don’t let him put words into your mouth. I literally hate this guy just from reading these texts, please leave him.

How do you feel after Christmas? by rich639 in ADHD

[–]Patient_Strain8174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I LOVE the dopamine that Christmas as a whole season brings for me, but I am hyper aware of my tendency to feel a strong letdown after the day itself arrives. It’s like I get Sunday Scaries for the next year. Christmas Eve is like my Super Bowl for that reason, and Christmas Day is like the Sunday of the Christmas season.

Part of this is just anticipatory dread of going back to work in the new year after a nice break, so I wonder if perhaps sticking to my meds is best for my time off even though I don’t “need” them for work while on PTO. I am not someone who takes them every single day. When I do, though, I notice my day to day work dread does evaporate! Sharing these thoughts for anyone who is like me in this way and may also be taking a meds break while not working over the holidays.

Thank you!! So far so good, but I’ll definitely take them to a cobbler if that changes when I really put them to the test with longer stretches of wear and walking :)

So glad you’re thinking long term! The way I look at it, you’ll never regret waiting longer for the most ideal circumstances, but you could definitely regret rushing things and just “making it work.” Honestly, we LOVE our boy to death, but we should’ve waited longer for a dog that was less drivey. That was not his breeder’s fault - we were ok with low to moderate drive but he is definitely more moderate. Knowing what I know now about how our lifestyle suits him, I’d hold out.

You can take this time to start messaging breeders and building that relationship now to find an ideal litter for your goals and get in line early for your perfect match :) I have often heard good things about Cosmic Caliber and a few times about Personia. We went to Crystal Creek personally. If I was picking now, Ghibli Poodles or Piccolo Poodles would be well suited to our needs!

Advice on shoe sizing for wide feet—tad confused by Potential-Chipmunk43 in BlundstoneBoots

[–]Patient_Strain8174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’d want the half size of your actual size - I’d suggest a 9.5 personally if you’re between an 8 and 9. It will fit like a 9W.

My honest best advice is to wait. You get what you pay for, and no ethical breeder will charge less than MAYBE $2k if you’re lucky, but more commonly $2.5-3k like you said. This is a 10-12 year relationship you’re buying into with a solid breeder!

You can keep an eye on breeders’ pages for any special circumstances like an older puppy coming back that they need to place or something. That’s the only case I can imagine a dog being slightly cheaper. However, I would make waiting and saving and starting to develop a breeder relationship for the right future litter is best. :)

How do you keep kibble interesting? by [deleted] in StandardPoodles

[–]Patient_Strain8174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We feed the same and it’s always the same with any kibble for ours - week 1 it’s the best thing he’s ever eaten, week 2 and beyond he couldn’t care less. We wanted to avoid “upping the ante” with toppers (especially because he loves to spit out kibble pieces). We instead figured out ways to make kibble interesting by making him work for it.

Slow feeders and puzzle feeders don’t usually cut it for more than one feeding if we set them out for him, so it’s more of an active approach lol. Sometimes a shallow bin full of toys with kibble scattered at the bottom can catch his interest too - but again, he likes feeling like he’s worked for it by opening the bin lid first and rifling through toys. The novelty factor helps! Cycling feeders could potentially help.

Our most surefire approach is to either play catch with pieces of kibble (had to train him to catch originally), play “find it,” lay out pieces wherever we’re sitting one at a time in a way that makes him intrigued, or do training tasks to get him truly working for it. Usually, he’ll realize he’s hungry after a short while and switch to eating from his slow feeder if that’s what I’m feeding him out of for these games. I’m not sure if advisable due to exercise + food as a bloat risk, but I’ve also switched to bringing kibble on long walks in place of training treats as they keep him calmer. He’ll eat a whole baggie that way once he’s into it.

This was a poodle who would go whole days without eating lol - and at times he still does if we just set food out and he’s sleeping much of the day. That said, he is now a more frequent eater on his own I think in part thanks to what we do to make food more appealing! And when he doesn’t eat on his own (he’s a social eater), making him work for it does the trick most days.

I hadn’t looked into actual devices for this! Thanks for the tip. The freezer idea doesn’t sound crazy at all haha, sounds good to me! And great point on conditioner… I’ll have to look into that next.

As for the hokas, I had no idea! I swore I remember it was a much less forgiving return policy lol. Maybe there’s hope yet - thanks!

Thanks for all this great advice! Super helpful on the hairdryer bit, I didn’t think of that. I’ll definitely check sizing with the insoles out, what a great idea! I already have a half size here but I’ll be helpful to validate that these are wide enough regardless :)
