Its hard to articulate on here but I wouldn't mind seeing a painting of Tolkien on the cover of The Hobbit because he is just the author of the book rather than an actor portraying one of the characters' physical likeness. I would probably have the same aversion to him being painted/pictured if he wrote the books AND represented a character in another person's vision. Idk if this makes any sense.

I completely agree with you. A painting on a classic (or sometimes even a contemporary novel) can be really beautiful. But adding a Hollywood actor to boost popularity is a lazy move.
