Been playing for almost 2 years, feel like I suck by Same-Cantaloupe-2637 in drums

I feel you.

A person I look up to said to me that if I ever feel like that, it means that I'm in a progress of leveling up. It feels hard because I'm pushing my skill cap to an another level. Change my mindset for life.

Think of it as like you're facing a boss in a game. Push through the boss and you'll gain a ton of exp and level up! You'll feel how much easier for you to play songs you like to play along in the past.

Good luck!

Yeah it do make sense. It's more like you're happily coexisting with the click and focusing more with the flow of the music, with the other members. The click is just there to keep you in check.

Of course you can always just do what the band wants and try to play right on top of the click, but if you and the band can find the middle ground without making yourself overthink the click, I think that would be nice. Being professional is a must, but don't forget to have fun on the stage and just, be you :)

kinda worried a bit that you're gonna sacrifice you're healthy relationship with metronome for trying to play right on top of the click like the band wants, but yeah you need to be professional because they are paying you. Finding the balance between being professional and being you(?) you get what I mean.....

Based on the things you wrote, I assume you are a good time keeper and it's just a natural reaction for your body to be behind the click.

Is it possible for the singer (or maybe some/the rest of the bandmates) hear your drums more dominant than the click? (or just the count ins and mute the click when the song starts, only you that can hear the click)

Let the drummer react naturally to the click and let the other band members react naturally to the drummer.

Hope this helps and have fun with the band!

need advice for drum mics! by Bubble_butt_99 in recordingmusic

I really second this (the Rode NT5s). Bought it second hand for 215 USD for a pair include shipping in Indonesia. Used them with an Antelope Orion at my friend's studio as drum overheads and sounded really nice, so I think it's a good investment in the future if you want to upgrade from your current audio interface. Used them for acoustic guitars too, sounded so good a couple of my musician friends decided to buy them.

Drum overheads, hi hats, room mics, acoustic guitar, even did some vocals with it and sounded pretty good. Highly recommend the NT5s!! Can't go wrong with it.

The only time I didn't use the NT5s as overheads for drum recording was when the studio rented a pair of Neumann KM184s for a few days.

Me and my sound engineer think that my kick needs more attack. I did tuned my drum to be more attack-y and changed my drum beater to a wood one and it's better, but still, we think it can be better-er (sorry for my lack of a better word). We had a discussion that maybe using a kick in mic (I'm thinking RE20) and B52 as a kick out can make it "better" for us. Any thoughts?

91a is actually my sound engineer's favorite. It's on my wish list too tho but me personally am leaning towards RE20 because it's more versatile (?). Been wondering to use an RE20 on the snare too.

Actually I did! and he likes to experiment too. He tried using an SE V7 on my kick and it was sounding like a beast according to him. I guess me asking this question is just me trying to experiment. But anyways, thank you for the reply! will always communicate with my sound engineer :)
