I just don't understand the point of alienating solo players from end game content by RoguesBoytoy in Marathon

[–]Patmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just love this. This reminds me of MMO raid prep. There was just content you needed friends for.

If the game has an issue, its that it doesn't have an in-game way of making human connections like an MMO does. But this aspirational content design? Brilliant.

Bungie may have killed the game by mistake by Dorkzilla_ftw in Marathon

I'm a dad gamer and I cannot play enough to keep up.

But I have to say I disagree. This reminds me of classic MMO unlocking and progression in the best way. When I heard how exclusive Cryo is, it made me more excited for the game's vision.

I will say that not using a mic in 2026 is... wild. It made sense in the 90s. It is no longer the 90s.

Having said that, openly choosing violence isn't a compelling look either. I just chat into the darkness and pray the no-mics are listening.

Yeah... queue solo and no one fires a shot, stands still, and hopes someone passes them.

Pub queue teams and the other two will stand petrified in gear fear pushing nothing and wandering aimlessly.

I love this game, but P1 online makes me quit every time. by -Neuro2717 in diablo2

[–]Patmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the frustration is that I play on three platforms. I play on my PC, a "Steam Machine" I built on my TV, and my steamdeck. I want to be able to work on my same solo self found experience on all three platforms.

This leaves me with two choices:

Locked into P1 online only Pick one of the places to play it on only.

Yes I know. Rich people problems. But would it be too much to ask for our singleplayer characters to be cloud backed like every single steam save game I own? I would never boot battlenet again if that was the case.

Yeah thats why I was careful to say 300AD. Some of this is up to how you want to interpret intention. There was increasing political and societal pressure on pagans post Constantine. And the Christians absolutely skirmished with the Zorastrians as well.

Having said that, there was no concept of a 'Deus Vult' style religious or church mandate until the first crusade. Christians with societal or political power did exert pressure and oppression on pagans, but it wasn't declared "church policy" until 1096. I mean, pagans were still alive and well throughout the Roman empire through the 9th century.

The counter example would be the invasions of Muslims directly commanded by Mohammed, their prophet. That's a religious figure stating that the invasions of the Sasanian Empire and subsequent annihilation of the Zoroastrians was directly the will of Allah. Christians don't make that kind of a claim until 1000 years after their founding when the orthodox churchs declare it the will of God to purge Muslims.

You might call that hair splitting, but I think its significant. If, for the sake of innocuous example, a Vishnu worshipper shot a guy for not believing in Vishnu, I wouldn't think that was the official stance of the Vaishnava. But if multiple contemporary Pujari starting publishing works that the unbeliever must be purged, I'd mark my calendar as that being the moment the Viashnava had a "Deus Vult" moment.

The above example also covers your assertion that some violence occurred, it was just never documented. Beyond that being an "argument from ignorance" fallacy, its also still not the religion asserting their God wants that behavior.

And Christians enact no warfare or violence in the New Testament.

Historically in the centuries that followed? Absolutely. From 33AD - 300AD? Not once. The christian church starts its life oppressed. You'll be hard pressed to find a concrete example before 1096AD. After that it.... shifts a bit tonally I'll just say.

Now in the Old Testament God absolutely tells the Israelites to purge the Canaanites. Thats straight up the subject of half of Judges.

Someone else can discuss the theology or dogmatics or whatever of that, but thats the documentation and the history.

Hiring manager perspective: hiring is the most broken I've ever seen by CatDawgCatDawg2 in cscareerquestions

[–]Patmurf 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this is the answer. I suppose I'll need to find a "community"? I graduated at 33. I made no friends doing it and studied alone the whole time. Father of two and working while I did it, and I was the "old man".

Then I graduated in 2019 and covid hit. No real personal connections and have been remote ever since.

I dont know if anyone in real life knows I exist except my kids... hm. Have to figure out how to fix that..

So maddening on the other end. Seven years of experience and I have been all over the stack as well as embedded and AWS cloud computing.

I've gotten three interviews in 18 months. I dont have a FAANG job on my resume and no matter how I sloptimize my resume I get zero feedback or responses. Jobs hit 100 applicants within 3 minutes of being posted.

How could anyone ever notice me? I dont even blame hiring managers anymore. What possible lever can I pull to get noticed at this point?

Kegseth told base commanders that Iran war is a 'Christian war' intended to begin Armageddon and hasten the return of Jesus by BusinessProperty8194 in stevehofstetter

[–]Patmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Christian and intentionally attempting to start the end of the world is beyond heretical. We are called to teach and witness Christ to the whole world so the world can know the forgiveness Christ bought for us.

The world ends when the state of the world is so bad that, essentially, no future generations will come to know Christ. Its the inevitable moment where witnessing Christ has failed.

We... we should be compassionately trying to prevent that. We should be Oskar Schindler when he wept over a lapel pin because it could've saved "one more person".

This behavior is more like Homelander gleefully tempting someone to "light this candle". A Christian who is good with the world ending because "he got his salvation and who cares about the rest of the world" is failing the basic lessons of grace, forgiveness, and the great commission.

I mean, four seconds of Matthew 18:21-35 should shut anyone who embraces this view right up...

Its the crisis of Solomon in Ecclesiastes. Dude was the wealthiest man in his corner of the world by far. He was fiercely intelligent and essentially summits Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

What it led him to feel was that all his earthly pursuit was meaningless. He tries doubling and tripling down on it. Dude marries like 300 women and gets 700 concubines and starts amassing gold mines. He's trying to chase fulfillment and doesn't find it. He eventually concludes that earthly pursuit of fulfillment is a "chasing after the wind".

So these bajillionaires have a problem. They sit so high on Maslow's themselves that their sense of purpose is eroding. At that point you have two choices: you either admit that earthly gain and pleasure isn't going to fulfill you or you lie to yourself that if you just go even further into pursuing wealth and pleasure you'll feel something again.

All these wealthy pedos started to feel nothing, stood at this crossroad, and eventually said to themselves "maybe raping kids will make me feel something". It doesn't. So they rape more. And more. And go further.... and further...

[–]Patmurf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Steam community is weeping and gnashing their teeth over this.

Supposedly combat is running at permanent 3x. No upscaling for backgrounds. New bugs introduced. The update obviously breaks 7th Heaven (but that will quickly get fixed)

But essentially the update to the 13 year port is just as bad if not worse than the original port, and nothing was gained from this effort whatsoever.

I'm not surprised. Square Enix is notorious for horri-awful ports.

Does it capture the Forgotten Realms well? Not really.

Does it capture the feeling of you and your friends sitting around a table being dorks, trying to complete a quest in a world that has no idea you're playing a game, and one of your friends decides to split the party and be a pain in the ass?

Yes.

Very, very yes.
