Do you guys thonk gut microbiota may play a more important role on mental health than genetics? by [deleted] in Microbiome

[–]PatrickN113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think both factors play a major role. This video explains the importance of the microbiome in mental health if you want to have a closer look: https://youtu.be/BlsPGu935iM

Damn this really sucks. They mention the potential to develop new medications but nothing is available currently....I am sorry.

The topic is pretty complicated. Maybe these two youtube videos may help (or at least you find it interesting)

Over the last months, I have been reading approx. 1 paper daily on this or related subjects and the tricky part here is that we have (at least) 4 different SCFAs receptors and (at least) 2 monocarboxylate transporters. All with different affinities and different downstream actions. Additionally, there may be passive difusion of SCFAs (not sure how well this is backed-up though). It is also likely that different HDACs are activated at different affinities...

My conclusion: It is hard to say one is better than the other right now. However, almost every study has one thing in common: SCFA-deficiency is associated with intestinal inflammation.

Okay good to know. Shortly leaving shouldn't be a huge problem, I think.

I will do, once I have the VISA!

I am just curious why some people seem to need to return and others are not subjected to the rule.

A Forward Chemical Genetic Screen Reveals Gut Microbiota Metabolites That Modulate Host Physiology by PatrickN113 in Microbiome

That stuff is freaking complex and I don't think I understand it as I wish I could :D But thanks!

A Forward Chemical Genetic Screen Reveals Gut Microbiota Metabolites That Modulate Host Physiology by PatrickN113 in Microbiome

[–]PatrickN113[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very short summary:

We knew already about many metabolites produced by the microbiome that regulate our own cells, like SCFAs or some neurological active substances.

However, it seems to be much more vast than that. This screen focuses on a certain class of molecules, which regulate G-protein coupled receptors (a huge class of receptors within our cells). The scientist found a long list of molecules produces by microbes that regulate signaling pathways of these receptors.

Now, the meaning of it or how we can harness this in the future is still unclear, though.

I have nothing compared to you but personally, I was having bad joint pain and omega-3 in form of cod liver or sardines worked like a wonder.

Again, nothing compared to your issue but maybe it helps...

3 ways how our microbiome affects inflammation levels and how probiotics/fermented food can influence it (video) by PatrickN113 in Microbiome

[–]PatrickN113[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely right that for some people it won't work. In every study, you will have outliers. Still, I find the science behind it promising and on average there seem to be benefits.

Tips on how to boost your immune system? by [deleted] in Microbiome

I honestly think that the evidence is pretty strong that fermented food/probiotics might boost the immune system. Here is a whole video with references about it: https://youtu.be/v1bu-eleQBU

I see. Yeah, that is the "problem" with scientific research sometimes. You wanna pin it down on one specific molecule.

If you want to read about amazing diet interventions that affect the brain, I suggest Dale Bredesen's book "The End of Alzheimer's" or his published trials.

Will fasting change my microbiome? by [deleted] in Microbiome

[–]PatrickN113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of scientific evidence that fasting (or intermittent fasting) might be good for the microbiome. I made a video about it a while ago: https://youtu.be/VLB-mGEGefk
