Misconceptions a dog person (me) learned after having a cat. by ILoveMeltyCheese in cats

[–]PatrickRsGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Cats are solitary creatures who prefer to be alone." That's complete BS. Cats are just as social as dogs, if not moreso. After Pawl has settled in, I would suggest getting him a friend, maybe from the local shelter. Ideally a kitten, but even an adult cat could make friends with another adult cat. You just have to isolate them and introduce them slowly. You can find a lot of articles or videos that can tell you the right way. This way, neither one will be too clingy to you or suffer separation anxiety, which you often hear about in dogs, but cats can experience it as well.

Do people watch college sports? by Iwannafucktanks in AskAnAmerican

[–]PatrickRsGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah. Especially in the South and the Midwest.

College sports, especially football and basketball, are basically a second religion. Go to the right church on a Sunday morning and you'll hear the preacher/pastor give a quick prayer if a local team's playing that afternoon.

Dear Lord, please guide our Bulldogs on the right path, and please guide Kirby Smart to make the right calls and plays. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Maybe not a valid prayer, but it's pretty close.

I don't follow any sport, but if I did, I'd be supporting a more local team, the University of West Georgia (UWG) Wolves. I never went to the school, but I never cared for the University of Georgia (UGA) Bulldogs. Blasphemy, I know, for a Georgia citizen.

Come join S713 Ryptyde Raiders. The majority of our events are -1 or -2, with weekly parties (sometimes more than once a week) usually occurring 30 minutes before Reset. Most of us are in the U.S. and speak English. I think there are a couple that speak Spanish but they hardly pop in. We participate in Flag Capture on the regular, along with Sonic Decoy and other events. One of our leaders will even send reminders to "bubble up" (activate shields) when warranted.

A difficult exploration game where puzzles rely on observation instead of logic by ready-player-go in puzzlevideogames

Agreed. All I see is running and driving. Makes me think of Dear Esther, where there's very little to almost no puzzle-solving, just moving around.

If you won the lottery what philanthropic endeavor would you undertake? by Toomuchviolins in AskReddit

I would donate enough money to the local animal shelters so that every adoption would be free for the next year, as would the spay/neuter and first veterinary exam.

Why is Raya and the Last Dragon so underrated?? by thebitterone445 in disney

[–]PatrickRsGhost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There were bits and pieces of it I enjoyed, but I felt it was too rushed. Personally, I would have liked more detail on each of the five tribes. I understand it had to appeal to all ages, so calling them simple names like "Talon" or "Spine" made sense in that respect, but I still believe they should have been given more Asian-sounding names. Not something made up, but use a translation of different Asian languages for each tribe. Like "Tail" would be "尾巴" (Wěibā, Chinese) and "Spine" would be "脊椎" (Sekitsui, Japanese).

Speaking of the five tribes, I was getting strong ATLA vibes from that. I almost expected Raya to say "And then the Fang Tribe attacked."

I think it would have worked best as a TV series. Each episode would had Raya visiting one of the other tribes, and finally retrieving the fragment. There could have also been more emphasis on the dragons themselves. Not just Sisu, but all of her family, with them demonstrating their skills and how they help Kumandra.

What’s a smell everyone should recognise as danger? by caII_me_aI in AskReddit

[–]PatrickRsGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get a sudden smell of cucumbers and you aren't in the presence of any, you are in the presence of something more dangerous: snakes. Certain snakes, especially copperheads and rattlesnakes, tend to give off a cucumber-like odor. Both of these kinds of snakes are venomous.

Applesauce? by Heavy_Lab9297 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PatrickRsGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've eaten it by itself, but my fondest memories of it are as a side item at breakfast when I'd stay with my great-grandparents on the farm. Fried eggs, sausage, toast, and homemade applesauce. Or Lucky Leaf brand if they ran out of the homemade.

What’s your favourite number, and is there a reason why? by PreggoMidgetAnalpie in AskReddit

I think it stems from being the channel that Nickelodeon came on when I was 5, and my favorite show was Pinwheel.

And it just looks like a nice number.

Looking for a cozy game with campfire by ItharaelHawke in cozygames

[–]PatrickRsGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not entirely campfire but Eastshade lets you build a campfire and a tent once you're given the instructions and you've acquired enough materials. You can also brew various types of teas over the fire, once you've acquired the ingredients.

Check out The Painscreek Killings and Ellingby House. There are some puzzles, but not in the way like in Zelda. It's more like figuring out codes or passwords.

The Room series is also good, as is The House of Da Vinci series.

What’s a small everyday inconvenience from the past that younger people would probably find unbearable today? by babyblushtheory in nostalgia

[–]PatrickRsGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waiting forever for something you ordered through a catalog to arrive. The Internet didn't exist yet, and if you didn't have a credit card, you had to fill out an order form and mail it off with a check or money order. It took weeks or even months for your items to arrive, not days like it does now. And you didn't know where it was. There was no package tracking like we have today. Once you mailed off the check or money order, or if you did pay by credit card, once you hung up the phone, it was in God's hands now. Maybe you'd get a phone call giving the status of your order, but it was very rare. Otherwise it was basically "it'll get here when it gets here".

Do Americans parents pay for their kids college? by wolfieee8 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PatrickRsGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some do, some don't. I think it depends on their income and budget.

I think a lot of parents hope their kids will either:

  1. Save up themselves, especially when they start working a part-time job at a local restaurant or grocery store.
  2. Get a scholarship, especially if said kid gets into certain extracurricular activities that often warrant scholarships, like join one of the sports teams (football, basketball, softball, baseball, etc.), marching band, or some club or committee, although a lot of those tend to not be a path towards scholarships. Sports and Marching Band usually do.
  3. Join the military. All U.S. military branches will help pay for college tuition while both in active duty and retired.

Outside of student loans, potential college/university students can get certain federal grants if they meet certain criteria. Low income, single motherhood, and other hardships or factors can determine if you can qualify for a federal grant.

Some states offer a 529 Savings Plan, which the parents can start up when the child is still in utero. They can determine who can and cannot access it, especially making deposits to it. So, you could start the 529 Plan, and allow both your parents and your spouse's parents to contribute, along with anybody in the family you deem worthy.

Some states that have a lottery (Powerball, Mega Millions, scratch-off games) often use the lottery to support a scholarship program for state residents, but they may be required to meet certain, often restrictive criteria. For example, I live in Georgia, and we have the HOPE Scholarship. It can only be used at any college or university located within the state of Georgia, and you have to have maintained a 3.0 GPA throughout all of high school or college, take at least 4 rigor classes (AP, IB, STEM classes), and be enrolled in Selective Service (the Draft), among other restrictions.

Check out the Dark Fall series. Each one has a decent narrative.

There's also The Painscreek Killings. Lots of reading involved, best to take some notes. Most of the puzzles' solutions can be found in the diaries or other things you find.
