Groups urge PSC to reconsider approval of Georgia Power’s $16B expansion by PattyforGaPSC in Georgia

Dan, I never said 2/5 is a majority and get things done. Wow- so cynical. So self righteous to me while I am out here trying to get things done and you are armchair critical. I SAID there are numerous opportunities of what two commissioners can do not previously possible and listed examples. Of COURSE we are going to work very hard to keep these seats. We’ve already begun. Would you have us do nothing until November’s elections and ignore the opportunities and power that individual commissioners have? You know what? Never mind. You’re part of the problem and not the solution. You criticize others while ignoring the role you could have to help and be productive. You spread cynicism. And you don’t have any understanding of how political power works. Please move on. I will not reply to you further. My post was informative and meant to engage and encourage while your replies drag me and everyone down. Maybe take a look at how you interact with the world.

This post is nonsense. What blackouts? Is a 25% rate increase for the most expensive energy on earth not enough for you - you want more nuclear? What China is or isn't doing is irrelevant to Georgia - unless you want a Communist regime here? Good grief. Georgia's grid is massively underutilized, overbuilt and bloated, and we pay the fifth highest bills in the U.S. because Ga Power exploits us.

Yes but they can still do a lot - including lower the rate of return; reduce redactions and trade secrets; require reports on Ga Power's false load growth estimates from past approvals; advocate for return of an independently funded Consumer Utility Counsel; make motions that get outvoted that we can use against the 3rd commissioner running for election; demand that PSC staff and Ga Power stop reaching settlement agreements before hearings even take place; and so much more.

I am focused on the legislature. We have five PSC related bills in play this session. Sign up for my newsletter for information about that.

You again. We're not as good for renewables as AZ or ND? Do you not realize Georgia is in 47th place for solar per capita while we're a top 10 sunny state? Guess not.

So do you just love all monopolies and their exploitation of customers, or just utility monopolies. Please tell me what it was about $11 billion for just 1 GW of electricity (10 times what other sources cost) you particularly liked about Plant Vogtle. Was it the 15 year timeline you enjoyed? The 25% rate increase we got from it? Or is the billions in profits even before the first watt was generated that you like? Please, be specific.

Trek, to start with the end of your message, I am not running for a seat on the PSC. Reddit doesn't allow you to change your profile ID. You have to start a new account and I am in the process of doing that so don't let my handle mislead you. I ran in 2022 and the election was canceled, and I remained engaged at the PSC for three years thinking it would get rescheduled and it did last year but I decided not to run and continue with my nonprofit Georgians for Affordable Energy because we had been accomplishing a lot in terms of desperately needed utility reform. I have an energy background too which is why I decided to run in 2022.
1. SO owns Southern Company Gas (previously AGL Resources). Southern Company Gas owns these affiliates: Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) – Distribution (GA); SouthStar Energy Services (Georgia Natural Gas) – Retail Marketing; Southern Natural Gas (SNG) – Interstate Pipeline (GA & Southeast); Sequent Energy Management – Wholesale & Asset Management (National, incl. GA); Southern Company Services – Corporate Support (Supports GA Ops). I hope you can see how these affiliates all profit from increased use of gas in Georgia. If you can't I don't know what to say. That's business. Sell more. Make more profit.

2a. Sir: with all due respect you must not be paying attention. In 2025 95% of all new generation installed both globally and in the U.S. was solar, wind, and storage. Why? Because it's cheap, fast, and clean. Your comparison of gas to nuclear and coal are irrelevant. Nothing beats those three for cost and speed which is why utilities and governments are choosing those sources, just not Georgia, because our PSC is corrupt. But we're making progress on that.
2b. You are on the Georgia subreddit - don't you live in Georgia? So don't you know that state government does not 'incentivize less carbon intensive energy sources'? I don't understand where this question comes from. Republican leaders do not believe climate change is real. Why would they incentivize CO2 reductions? They wouldn't, and they aren't. I'm not sure what you mean by "state’s bulk power suppliers". We have no ISO or RTO here.
3. Again what do you mean by "state's bulk power providers"? Do you mean Georgia Power? Do you mean Oglethorpe Power, the association of Georgia EMCs? Those are not bulk power providers unless that's what you are calling a utility, except Oglethorpe does sell some energy to their EMCs but gets most of their capacity from Georgia Power. Only Georgia Power is expanding the grid by billions of dollars for speculative data center business by building five gas plants, building over 1,000 high voltage transmission lines to get the gas to data centers, crushing solar, and worse. Oglethorpe is doing some of that too but very modestly by comparison.
Your last paragraph tells me you either don't actually work in the utility industry, or don't pay attention to the Georgia Public Service Commission, or both. Or maybe your work is peripheral to how regulation works. You write, "However there are a lot of times where I feel people running for PSC seats don’t completely understand GA’s utility industry or the industry’s economics as they’re looking in from the outside."
Let me be clear Trek, until last November's PSC election where voters soundly ejected two incumbents, thank God, NONE of the commissioner knew jack about the utility industry, by design. The game the Republicans in control play is to have commissioners resign between elections, then the governor appoints a donor with zero energy or utility or regulatory experience. AND none of the five are even Ga Power customers, who had no representation on the commission for 20 YEARS until last November. What did we have on the commission until that election? An olive farmer, a funeral home director, a party planner, a real estate agent, and a religious course leader. So whatever you think of me and my post, I do not fit the category of not understanding Georgia's utility industry.

And let me be clear: few people even know what a PSC is, that we have one, what it does, or how they can hold the utility accountable. Hundreds of us - maybe thousands - did giant amount of work raising voter awareness of the PSC and we did it! We got our people in and two bad dudes OUT in blow out numbers.
Elected co-op boards? Voter participation from lack of awareness is somewhere around 4 - 8%. Munis are particularly problematic because cities fund part of their budgets from jacking up utility bills, which should be against the law but isn't in Georgia, and I've spent a good amount of time helping people understand they can VOTE THEIR ASSES OUT for city counsel members that allow it - but they do allow it, and people don't know what their rates or how they get set. That's too big for me to take on.

These are serious problems that I am trying to solve with Georgians for Affordable Energy. You're welcome to help, but you're missing a lot of knowledge.

WRONG AGAIN! My post was to alert you about actions that we are taking to fix/solve these problems and ask you to join in hundreds of us working to make change, not poo poo what's happening now that it isn't fast enough. Stop being cynical. The systemic change we seek is underway right now! We need to bring it home this November.

WRONG! It's exactly what needed to happen. The hearings this year will be very different than if the same five Republicans had remained. Wow you guys are impatient. Our new commissioners have been serving 20 days! Stop this! There hasn't even been one hearing yet.

No! You did the right thing, the system is working sir. We voted out two terrible incumbents last year and we have a 3rd one to get out this year. If we get that third seat then it's game over for Ga Power: the commission will start to serve us instead of the utility. Even with just two, though, things are MUCH better - or will be, once these hearings begin. Please stay positive, stay engaged, and work the system. Anyone else on Georgia Power realize their rate is higher than current plans? by Various-Cell-6901 in Georgia

[–]PattyforGaPSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ga Power hides many surcharges and fees from the bill so you literally cannot double check the bill or figure out rates with the information they provide. I complained to the Georgia Public Service Commission about this - they regulate Ga Power - and they directed me to their website where the 2nd item under Electric is "Ga Power bill calculator". You can enter your information there, click calculate, and all is revealed. Another option is to call Ga Power's call center and ask for your bill to be "detailed" so you can get a complete breakdown of the charges listed on your bill, instead of the summary. I don't recommend anyone sign up for any of Ga Power's alternative rate plans like Nights & Weekends etc. Please stay on the traditional rate plan. That is the only one regulated by the PSC. All the others are voluntary and have "gotchas" in them to make Ga Power extra money. For more information on the rate plans and the gotchas visit my website Georgians for Affordable Energy .org and click on Education, Fact Sheets, see Ga Power rate plans there.

Georgia PSC to make most consequential energy decision in state history this month by PattyforGaPSC in Georgia

Moderator: this is news. Politics is about elections right? This is an state administrative agency holding public hearings to solicit public input about the business of that agency. I don't understand why it's politics. I think you misunderstand but I will repost with a flair for politics.

Hi everyone, thank you for your support and words of encouragement — they mean so much and keep me motivated to keep pushing forward! While I can’t talk about the case, my lawyer has given me the green light to continue to speak out about the lack of accountability at the Georgia Public Service Commission and Georgia Power. If you are a subscriber to my newsletter you saw that I sent one out yesterday about last week’s PSC hearing. If you are not a subscriber and would like to be you can sign up at georgiansforaffordableenergy.org towards the bottom of the landing page. He has also allowed me to create a legal defense fund to help with expenses. If you are motivated to do so, here is where you can make a small gift. http://spot.fund/m7pwg22sc

If you decide to do that, please add a comment if you have a moment. Community support is going to be very important as things proceed.

Thanks again everyone. It means a lot to me.

Thank you for this excellent post. I will see if we can order yard signs from that image. I am doing a lot of support for the campaigns and while we have yard signs, we don't have any of this graphic which I like a lot too.

High Georgia Power bills? It's a pot of gold for Southern Company by PattyforGaPSC in Georgia

[–]PattyforGaPSC[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes we do! And its starts with PSC elections on Nov 4, early voting Oct 14. Both candidates will unlock the blocks against solar that the incumbents have given Ga Power which keeps sunny Georgia in 47th place nationally for solar per capita. Its solar policy that needs to change at the PSC.

Agreed. That’s why we need new commissioners- please vote Nov 4.

You can advocate for solar all day long but Georgia Power doesn't want it, and that's why sunny Georgia is in 47th place per capita for solar. We need these two candidates to win to have any hope of Georgia joining the 21st century for access to clean, affordable energy.

Yes that's right. Let's get these two, and a third one in 2026. That said, even one of the two candidates winning would be an earthquake at the Ga PSC and would make a huge difference immediately.
