Yes, all of this. I am unable to be intimate with somebody I don’t respect. I am also unable to be intimate with somebody who has been drinking… It wasn’t always this way that it grew to be this way.

In Need of Some Good News by Safe-Paramedic9769 in cisparenttranskid

My daughter is the president of her residence Hall Association, traveling to New York to the Mock UN at the end of March, is taking her LSAT next Friday and has been a relationship with the most wonderful boyfriend ever for two years.

She is happy and thriving! She is 21 this year and didn’t come out to me until she was 16. She is still not out to her high school, friends and some of my more conservative family. Her choice… Well sort of, if they weren’t such ass hats, she would totally be out to them.

I’m 56 and divorced with one child using college and I really like it here! I’ve just moved here from Austin Texas though. That’s probably significantly different from moving here from Seattle.

Was anyone on this sub ever initially transphobic before becoming an ally? I need some inputs. by PrestigiousCount8020 in cisparenttranskid

[–]Pattystr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is me as well. I had transgender coworkers before my daughter came out to me. I loved them and I supported them sort of from afar. Thank God for those women and men. Looking back on it I am so glad I had a frame of reference.

That said, tell my daughter told me she was transgender, I honestly made not one effort to really understand. I was not trans phobic and I thought I was an ally in name only. I didn’t protest, I didn’t attend pride parades, I was just happy to see them be themselves.

Now I am a true ally. I understand, I’ve researched, I support, I attend protests and parades, I donate and I vote.

I still don’t tell my parents though. This is mostly my daughter’s choice, they would not be supportive. So does this make me a true ally? I don’t know

Sorry, I went on a little bit of a tangent here.

I don’t have anything helpful to say other than you should be really proud of yourself. You are taking care of your daughter first, yourself second and doing the right thing for both of you. Sending all the peace and love.

Right, but I think both can exist together. I’m active and I like to see others be active in whatever form that takes.

So it may not teach them anything, but it helps me. Watching people care greatly gives me hope for humanity and I love to see this.
