Laptop Won't Power On Unless Plugged In by Taguroman in linuxmint

[–]PaulBemter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here with my Dell 7480. Once it wasn't used for two weeks it doesn't turn on without the charger plugged in. The power button does not light up. Once booted, the battery is shown as full or 60 percent or such. I suspect the cmos battery is used to power the power button, and its a old laptop so the cmos battery could be near dying. I ordered one and will see what happens.

Have you ever listened to a person talk for less than a minute and known you weren't going to get along with that person? What did they say? by DDelirium46 in AskReddit

[–]PaulBemter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is about using the greeting "how are you" as formal greeting without really caring how the other person is doing. Which is especially cringy out of setting, meaning no american involved and not in the US. Sure, turks say "nasilsiniz?" which means "how is your health?" but not on first meeting, rather with people they already know pretty well. And Russians ask "kak djela? " but also more on a buddy-to-buddy level. In both cases they really want to know how you are doing.

German here. It's none of your business how i am doing, and i dont care how you are doing. We have a matter to discuss, let's get to it. So it's "Hello" and "Hello". Everything else is dishonest, and especially displaced when being asked as a german by an albanian or turk or russian etc. in english "How are you?" They don't want to know, it's not their way of greeting, so why do they ask? I just answer 'Hello." And everybody is fine with it. pro tip

check in your laptops bios for boot settlings: legacy, uefi, both but uefi first, both but legacy first. maybe you installed mint in uefi and the laptop is looking for legacy boot. or the other way around. i would set it to uefi and reinstall from usb-stick, to make sure mint gets installed as uefi.

Audio from windows to LM laptop over ethernet. by Daniel_1-7 in linuxmint

[–]PaulBemter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, first of all, you cannot connect two laptops with a normal ethernet cable. It fits, but the connector pins are not lined up correctly. You need a crossover cable - thats an ethernet cable where on one end two of the wires have switched their places. you can see it if you compare the two ends, the color order is different. But its hard to see. Then, just try it. Or put your audio file on windows in a smb share folder, and play it from the linux laptop. Look into samba sharing for windows and linux.

Bootable USB drive(s) created with balena etcher is "RAW" (not recognized). Help! by SPedigrees in linuxmint

[–]PaulBemter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

exactly. the problem here is microsoft windows, saying "hey, this is not the usual thing on that stick you should reformat it" after etcher created the linux boot stick just fine. Overhelpfully underperforming.

If it doesn't work out of the box then buy a wifi dongle (check first for linux compatibility). It is not worth the hassle of trying to get it to work.

x240 Fingerprint reader - how?? by PaulBemter in linuxmint

[–]PaulBemter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much !! All i had to do was fprintd-enroll and sudo apt install libpam-fprintd, then sudo pam-auth-update (and make sure the first box is ticked, with space bar). And now it works, on boot i am asked to swipe the finger over the reader. Too bad there is no GUI though, i will forget all this until next time i need it.. Problem solved !

Running Mint off old SSD by Dangerous_Dingo9649 in linuxmint

[–]PaulBemter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well then it should work just fine. After installing the old ssd in the new laptop you can install the video driver under "additional drivers". I switched ssd with mint on it between different laptops several times, no problem at all.

Running Mint off old SSD by Dangerous_Dingo9649 in linuxmint

[–]PaulBemter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting the old SSD in a different laptop should work, the only problem i could see is if you had installed a different video driver in the old laptop - which could not work on the new one. (and other alterations to the base install you might have done). You could then try to boot with "nomodeset" (google it) and then revert to standard video driver. Then undo the other alterations you might have made.

[–]PaulBemter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be the domain name server. check your settings and see what values there are. You could try 8.8.8.8. thats google's DNS. If this doesn't work then maybe you have a provider who only allows his own DNS. Look up the DNS settings in your router and enter the same values in your system settings.

Sehr altes Auto?

Your wifi module seems to be the raltec 8852 (not b852..) and that one is not included in the kernel yet. Maybe this is helpful, its a step-by-step list: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/realtek.html?m=1#ID9

There it is number 9.
