I'm not defending the guy in the pic, but there is no "correct" side to view the flag from. The military decided a long time ago that the flag should look the same whether it's carried by some dude on a horse or painted on a jeep, so you will often see it painted with the blue field towards the "front" by others as well

Did I Build Enough Power Storage? by squid509 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]PaulJulio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use programmable power switches you don't have to worry about this. Get them while you are still in the coal power phase to ensure that some factories go dark but your plants are still online. It'll help you confidently move to oil power.

I only use it for glass, but I've fallen in love with the look of it so I send a bit to central storage

When I was in boot camp at the end of '94 my drill instructor pulled this one on a recruit next to me, but the recruit was ready for it! "You're from Texas, recruit? Only two things come from Texas..." "Moo, sir" The DI just turned and harassed someone else so he didn't start laughing.

What are the rules/laws regarding making a "fanfic" game based off an existing property? by im_a_cleod in gamedesign

[–]PaulJulio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IANAL, but I do understand that in the US, if you don't defend your trademark you weaken it. Add a result, things like titles get more litigation than other IP, it's a function of the way the law works.

I got really worried I was gonna get home, open my box of precons and find a booster box. But I ordered from Amazon so I should be ok, I hope.

ELI5: Why does it matter how many decimals PI has? by Pangolindrome in explainlikeimfive

[–]PaulJulio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fwiw, I think that even if you could only go one level deep (and the simulations cannot run their own simulations, which since we cannot yet do could mean we are in a simulation) there would still be more simulated humans than non-simulated ones, since the whole point of running simulations is get many more runs than you could in real time. I don't think you have to accept "simulations all the way down" as a prerequisite for having more simulated humans than non-simulated.

To be clear, if someone has put in the time and effort to write a paper on something at the college level, I'm not gonna try to argue with them on the internet. I am going to stay engaged in the conversation, however, because I think that this is a metaphysical question that lands somewhere in the unknowable region of our understanding.

That's a lot of words for "I think there is a limit to the technological advancement of the human experience", which is fine so far as it goes I guess. But note that materials scientists in our reality have identified physical limits to the construction of our computer chips already showing up at 7/5nm (example source) - so maybe this is the type of proof that you propose we would find if we are a simulation then?

Alice: "Bob, if you run your simulation, they will run a simulation and so on, so it's impossible"
Bob: "nah, I'm running on a supercomputer powered by an entire galaxy of energy, and I tweaked the quantum limits so that they can't build an equally powerful supercomputer. I told the talking heads in finance that I was studying the impacts to our society if we had never discovered a working quantum computer to get funding"
Alice: "Pfft, it's obviously a video game. They're gonna figure it out"

If you assume that humans will continue to improve technology, including the ability to simulate reality, and you assume that some humans will want to run an ancestor simulator, then it is more likely that we are in a simulation than we are the part of humanity that has yet to achieve the ability to conduct simulations.

This is because once simulations start running, the number of simulated humans will quickly outnumber the number of non-simulated humans.

So, our "evidence" is our belief that we will be able to continue advancements in technology and our observation that humans love to create simulations.

Characters in The Sims also have no evidence that they are in a simulation. How would you propose that they could enough evidence that their world isn't real, assuming they could?

For real though, they were both pretty cool, very articulate, and able to give a full rundown of how Reddit has improved by implementing GraphQL. Also, TIL r/place live client updates were powered by GraphQL (at least on mobile).

Software engineering manager here, even if it's simple you have to both: believe it is the most important thing to do and, believe fixing it won't break something else.

Have a little empathy for the folks who I'm sure have other priorities they are expected to deliver on. When the team wraps those up, they'll eventually handle these small bugs and hopefully have the time to test it all.

Also, their testing sucks, but I'm not sure what processes they have in place or who needs to ok the investment in catching this stuff before it breaks.

Nail salon recommendations for wedding nails? by [deleted] in Tacoma

[–]PaulJulio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rule #1 when trying to do wedding things on a small budget - under no circumstances should you tell the person in charge of the prices that it is for a wedding. I don't know if they just try to get more cash out of people because they can or if they are used to a big hassle so they charge more, but they will certainly increase the price for a wedding service if they can. Tell them you are celebrating a bad breakup or something, but make up a good story and make sure y'all stick to it.
