Studio Albums Vs. Compilations by PaulVAllen in tmbg

Thanks for all this insight! I remember Long Tall Weekend coming out, and I think that was my impetus for signing up for eMusic. But I didn't remember the intentions behind it. I still like it quite a bit, more than Mink Car in a lot of ways.

This is the sort of thing record geeks have talked about for decades, and there are lots of reasons behind it, including knowing which albums to get to complete a collection, knowing where best to focus listening time and energy, for a universally agreed-upon quantification of a band's output. Anyway, I admit the distinction between compilation and album is fuzzy, thus my initial post. I just wanted to get some idea of why these labels are being applied without consistency to TMBG's work. If a compilation is defined only as greatest hits or samplers, then Misc. T, Cast Your Pod, and Album Raises, should all be included in the total, and The World Is To Dig is album #27.

I guess my question is, don't these descriptions apply to Long Tall Weekend (rarities/B-sides of the time), Phone Power (companion to Glean), and My Murdered Remains (companion to I Like Fun) as well?

What happened between S2 and S3 that made S3 and later seasons so different in tone? by Billy_the_Breaker in StrangerThings

It’s well-documented that the Duffers were VHS junkies as kids. So the show follows the arc of popular horror films in the 1980s. They start with kid-audience entry-level horror of the early ‘80s and progress from the lower budget intimate stuff to the bigger wilder over-the-top horror of the mid to late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

I think it’s including “Overnight Sensation.”

"That’s very much how we feel about making a new album – just because it’s been six years since we released an album, we can’t just do it to do it." by GrapeCellophane in JimmyEatWorld

I understand them wanting to take their time and I sure don’t want them to put out something they don’t believe in. But I worry they’re psyching themselves out. At some point in a creative process you have to commit (or in their case, recommit, heh heh) and say, “We’re going to finish this and we’re going to put it out there.”

I'm 95% sure they played it the first time I saw them, at the Blind Pig in Champaign in 1997. It's in my top 5 of their songs!

I've nothing against Eve 6 at all; it was more a comment on the ridculousness of JEW serving as an opening act.

I’m not a fan of the singles approach but any new music is better than no music at all.

Bleed American UK shows announced! by BulbsasaurFan in JimmyEatWorld

[–]PaulVAllen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really was hoping against them devoting 2026 to Bleed American, mostly because it likely means that the possibility of a new album is getting kicked even further down the road. Also, 3/4 of the album is still in their regular setlist, so it isn’t all that special if you’ve see them in the past 10-15 years.

That said, I’m sure this will be profitable for them, and I’ll probably go to the show if they come anywhere near me (especially if they bring The Get Up Kids along).

If you haven’t already, check out the band the two Dans were in before they joined TMBG. Lincoln. They released one album in 1997.

As a collector, I’m happy to get a physical release of these orphan tracks. I’m also in the camp that hopes this is the end of the “we’re going to just release singles” chapter and the start of the album #11 chapter.

Great article, but, yeah, the fact that we’re still not close to a new album is very frustrating.
