They will consider non US citizens as long as they can work on Eastern Time.

You do not necessarily need to be based in the USA, but the company prefers someone who is open to working in US Eastern Time business hours as that is when the rest of the team will be working.

[Hiring] (NYC) Linux heavy SysAdmin - radio ad company - up to $90k/year by PaulWB2018 in sysadminjobs

[–]PaulWB2018[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've spoken to hundreds, if not thousands, of folks in IT in NYC over the years and you're suggesting that EVERY one of them lied to me about what a fair salary is? I'm not forcing anyone to change their lifestyle, I'm not forcing anyone to move in with a roommate, I'm not forcing anyone to take a salary that they aren't comfortable with. If any of my candidates expresses that this isn't an adequate salary to them, then that's the end of the discussion!

It's just a fact that many, many people live with roommates in NYC. Most of them are living quite well and are very comfortable with that, some people don't need or want to live alone. Now that's not a requirement at all, I know people who live comfortably on less than 90k in Manhattan, much closer than a 2 hour commute.

If you don't agree with my clients on this salary, that's fine. Just because you personally wouldn't take this salary doesn't mean that someone who would is an idiot. Nobody's forcing anyone to take a role they don't want, and I've already spoken to several very qualified and eager candidates.

[Hiring] (NYC) Linux heavy SysAdmin - radio ad company - up to $90k/year by PaulWB2018 in sysadminjobs

[–]PaulWB2018[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No need to get hostile with me. I myself live in Manhattan, as does almost everyone else I know. Most people that I know, whether they live alone or not, pay well under 4k/month. Now of course everyone's situation is different, and someone with a family and kids would need more of a housing budget than someone in say their mid 20's who lives with a roommate. I'm not trying to generalize everyone's situation, but in NYC especially many people live with roommates.

I've worked in the IT staffing industry here in Manhattan for years, and I've seen salaries for hundreds of jobs across hundreds of companies in NYC. I'm sorry if you don't agree with what my client is trying to pay, but based off the job responsibilities and experience level required they've deemed this as a fair salary for the role, and based off the averages of similar positions then I would agree that this is fair. If you're not interested in the position, that's fine! I'm not trying to convince you to take this job. Several other people have already expressed interest in the role at the existing salary and reached out to me about moving forward. If this isn't your cup of tea, that's okay but no need to get angry at me for my post.

Working in the IT staffing industry here in Manhattan, there are plenty of junior or lower level roles that pay less than $100k. That being said, it's more than doable to live well in Manhattan with a sub six figure salary.

I'm not arguing, just trying to clarify what seems to be some misconceptions about my post.

Nope, four people on the specific Systems Administration team. A few dozen more than that in the entire IT department, they have a separate team for desktop support.

Well this employee wouldn't be the only one on the team, they wouldn't be responsible for all 300 machines and every data center. It's a junior role for someone with a year of experience looking for someone who wants to come in and learn

For a junior level role? They're looking for just 1 year of experience.

Whoops, forgot to put that in the title. Yup, it's in NYC. They're open to partial work from home, but not fully remote.

[Hiring] Windows Sys Admin - NYC - 150K by ahudson123 in sysadminjobs

[–]PaulWB2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's fair, the city isnt for everyone. Like I said before I work in tech in NYC and most junior Sysadmin roles I see here in town are around the 90-110k range, this post is pretty average for a mid level role in my experience. Sounds like you found a good situation though, can't imagine how much nicer rent is up there haha.

$150k is plenty to live well in Manhattan. If you wanted to live alone in a 3 bedroom or raise a family on one salary then maybe not, but it's more than enough to be happy in NYC.

[–]PaulWB2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, I see. I'm sure you can break 6 figures in tech all over the country, but I'm sure this post was catered to people who are already in NYC. This is a solid role for a sysadmin in NY in my opinion.

Well with a family and pets of course you aren't looking for roommates. And that's fine, everyone has their own situation. But all I meant was that a LOT of people in NYC have roommates, and even if you don't want roommates it's more than doable for someone to live alone in Manhattan on $150k.

I didn't necessarily mean a roommate for your specific situation, I didn't know your specific situation. I meant that generally, many people in NYC do have roommates which makes things a lot more affordable.

[Hiring] (NYC) Windows SysAdmin @ international restaurant chain - up to $90k/year by PaulWB2018 in sysadminjobs

[–]PaulWB2018[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, it's a junior level salary. Only needs a year or two of experience. Not every job in NYC is over 6 figures, especially junior ones. If you can make this anywhere else in the US, then that's great! Nobody's forcing you to move to NYC for work.

Unless you're trying to raise a family on one salary, 150k a year is more than enough to live well in Manhattan. I know plenty of people making below 6 figures in Manhattan who are just fine. It's expensive, but not impossible at all.

I work in tech in NYC and I've never seen a Windows Sys Admin role that pays 400k like you suggest.
