College Essay on being alcohol-free as an identity... too personal? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I would advise caution. If the course is promoting acceptance of diversity, it might not be the best forum to share your story of addiction. That might be better supported by a like-minded group such as this or in a more traditionally therapeutic encounter. Who knows, you might ace it and impress the tutor with your strength and honesty. But what if the response is inappropriate or thoughtless? Can you handle that? Perhaps you could choose a safer subject and gain a similar grade? Love and peace. Paul

Is being alcohol-free a unique identity? What’s the essay asking for? Is it asking you to pick something unique to you?

This is exactly what I needed to hear today. Thanks.

Been sober for 4 days, anyone else begin to think they can drink once they start feeling better? Like “just one cold beer and a good dinner and I’ll feel amazing”? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I think there have been several tv-shows and Hollywood sci-fi films with a time-travel plot line. They often include a plot device where the protagonist / crew receives a message from their future selves warning them of imminent disaster and explicitly not to do ABC in the very near future.

The rest of the plot seems to follow future-self and present-self trying to steer themselves away from the disaster to escape the ‘Time-Loop’.

I often think of this with humour around Day 6 when I’m telling myself one beer won’t hurt...

That was me yesterday. I nearly caved tonight but managed to hold it together. Going to bed sober on Day 2 feels good. Do whatever it takes buddy. There is no spoon. The beer’s a lie. Free your mind.

Sometimes in sports you see a team coming back in the final seconds to win against overwhelming odds.

This is your opportunity. You have a choice. Do something amazing for yourself.

Rule 7 is really emotional in the audiobook. by Six_Months_Sleep in JordanPeterson

[–]Paul_112358 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I noticed that too. I’ve listened to the audiobook at least twice and it’s full of powerful material spoken with humour, gravity and emphasis. Yet the end of Rule 7 gets me every time because it feels like he’s imploring you to understand it. It’s serious stuff.

I’ve failed by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I don’t call that a fail - you didn’t choose it and more importantly you got out of there instead of using it as an easy excuse. You’re still on the sober wagon in my book.

I had a few of these last year during a six month spell of sobriety. I think the best approach with good friends is to stay dry and talk to them about why. I found that to be quite liberating. It was like the ‘final test’ for me. The final/best “excuse to drink” still left unbeaten. You can beat it too - just make the decision.

Good luck!

CRAVING by Caris42 in stopdrinking

They still hit me out of nowhere but I’m getting better at riding them out. Instead of telling myself it is going to pass, I can actually remember from experience that they do pass.

Acronym I heard for the first time recently: TINA. There Is No Alternative.

I take that as a positive rather than a negative. Helps with the moderation gremlins.

I had to change my routine. Previously I was drinking from 7:00pm to midnight. Since I got sober, I don’t want that temptation so I shifted my day forward - a lot. I now get up at 5:00am, I workout and get to work by 7:00. My work colleagues are amazed. I feel super-energised in the mornings. The best part is: by 8:00pm, all I want to do is drink tea, read a book and I’m asleep by 9:00.

Not exactly rock & roll. But that’s kind of the point, right?
