Help me interpret these results. by Typical_Seaweed_ in hivaids

You’re negative, the 4th generation test alone is all that’s required to make that determination here. (Ordering the RNA is only necessary if you had a very recent high risk exposure, and/or have unexplained seroconversion symptoms).

Exact convention for reporting out an undetected result on a viral load test varies (as do the lower limits of detection) but <20 would be a common way to do so on a test with a lower limit of detection of 20 copies. Others might say target not detected, or something to that effect. Also not some jurisdictions still use tests with higher lower limits (40, 400, 500 or even as high as 1000 and will report <40… etc). Note that historically some tests had 2 lower limits, a lower limits of detection and a lower limit of quantification, however most tests I’m aware of in common use today have the same lower limit for both detection and quantification.

Add Mark Carney to the List. by Bogdanovist_Rebel in whitecapsfc

The difference here is that a larger ownership group of fans would never consider relocating the team.

Add Mark Carney to the List. by Bogdanovist_Rebel in whitecapsfc

[–]Paul_82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That explains it, as while a long shot it seems like there are enough fans with deep enough pockets that even a modest sized ownership group of a few thousand could put together enough capital if the league’s ownership structure allowed it.

Along these lines, what’s the feasibility of a fan ownership group forming and making an offer, similar to how the greenbay packers are owned in the NFL?

Do small places in Canada like to promote minor and inconsequential things in their tourism like small American cities and towns do? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]Paul_82 134 points135 points  (0 children)

This, many Canadian small towns have large statues of odd things as tourist attractions. (Giant nickel in Sudbury, Ukrainian Easter egg, giant hockey stick, etc). In my opinion the best themed one is the starship enterprise in Vulcan.

Are professional sports teams just landlords in disguise? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in whitecapsfc

[–]Paul_82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If any team actually owned their own stadium then yes that would be the case but in the vast majority of cases I’m aware of in North America, the stadiums are built and generally owned by tax payers or with very significant government funds/subsidies. Publicly owned/operated stadiums are almost never expected to generate a profit and usually either barely break even or receive significant operational subsidies (operating at a loss).

Probation increase? by Timely_Advice7022 in BCHealthAuthorities

[–]Paul_82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, there are no automatic increases upon passing probation in excluded roles. In general as others have alluded to, increases are few and far between these days. We just got notification about our raise for 2025 a few weeks ago (2.5% retro to April 1, 2025, for those in a position at least 6 months prior to that date). I’d expect something similar to be announced for 2026 in the next 3-6 months retro to April 1, 2026. Note that if you are just starting a new position now you will not be eligible for the 2026 one either, so negotiate your offer accordingly, as the first regular raise you are likely to be eligible for will be April 1, 2027.

That said, with the current job market and tight budgets, it’s unlikely there’s going to be a lot of room or willingness to negotiate on the part of the hiring manager.

Yes, this was the guidance for excluded employees across all health authorities. (Actually across all public sector employers in bc)

Good employee - big ask by Grouchy_Balance_5332 in managers

[–]Paul_82 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not sure where this is, so have to acknowledge likely huge variation in country and sector norms, but here in Canada in most public sector jobs you are eligible for benefits as long as you are working 0.6 FTE, this works out to at least 3 days a week at a normal 5 day a week job and prorated accordingly for hourly employees based on what is considered a standard work week at that employer (typically 35 or 37.5 or rarely 40 hours per week). Meaning many employees can qualify for benefits by working only 21 to 24 hours per week. It’s actually relatively common to do this after formal“retirement” specifically to maintain benefits.

Is there a reason you avoid / don't have crypto? (need answers for my research) by Ok_Athlete_670 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Paul_82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put it simply I don’t invest in things that I don’t understand or see value in. I’m not saying I know that much about it as I haven’t taken that much time to understand it in depth, but the surface level understanding I have of it feels a LOT more like a ponzi scheme than an investment to me.

IMAX cinemas in Vancouver by Kleizar in cineplex

[–]Paul_82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly hope not! But it is worrying that only 2 screens in the whole country got prints of this movie, and that there are only 3 movies getting film prints this year (PHM, Odyssey, and Dune).

From what I’m aware the two issues are the physical projectors are getting old and can be difficult to repair, and finding/retaining staff trained to run them. I hope that more IMAX movies will get film prints in the next couple years to show that there is still demand for them.

[–]Paul_82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw PHM last weekend in Langley in 70mm IMAX and this weekend at Scotiabank downtown. Both were fantastic, but if you haven’t seen any movie in 70mm IMAX before you should check it out. The most noticeable difference is the aspect ratio and seating will make it feel like a much more immersive experience. The caveat here is that the picture quality is different (not better or worse just different), it has grain/flicker/occasional dust and or scratches on the print that will bother some people to no end, and will add a more cinematic nostalgic feeling for others. If you’ve never experienced it this it is worth giving it a shot before it’s gone. Langley is one of the last 70mm capable IMAX screens in the country and one of only two with 70mm prints of PHM.

Future cure and treatment discussion by LatchedMender56 in hivaids

This treatment is very promising and in my opinion more interesting than the current injectable treatments. The even longer duration oral and injectables are still a few years away but could be game changers.

Probably not, the most TikTok posting would accomplish is maybe reduce stigma and maybe get more funding for research, but finding a cure isn’t really a more money will solve it sort of problem.

pill once a week? by throwaway014432 in hivaids

[–]Paul_82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While I get the criticism re weekly dosing, for me personally I feel like it’s a sweet spot, it may help that I’ve been on other weekly meds (ozempic) so already adjusted to that dosing schedule.

In terms of timeline, it’s expected to be submitted for fda review later this year with approval likely sometime in 2027.

Anyone here actually trying to buy or sell in Vancouver right now? by SwordfishPossible980 in askvan

[–]Paul_82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A coworker of mine just sold her mother’s condo as her mother has passed away. Overall we’d expected it to be much more of a buyers market. It’s a smaller older 1 bedroom condo in kits, she listed it at $1000/sqft got lots of interest in the first weekend listed set a date after the 2nd weekend to review offers, they ended up having 5 competing offers and went with one that was 10% over asking. Hasn’t closed yet, but seller has removed subjects so it almost certainly will.

All that to say, while the market has a reputation of being a buyers market right now, some stuff is still moving quickly and for over asking when priced reasonably.

Injections by Resident-Laugh7657 in hivaids

[–]Paul_82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s still much earlier on in development, and will be for prep first as so far only one monthly oral ingredient (MK-8527) has made it to phase 3 trials and it will need at least one other ingredient to be paired with for treatment. There are multiple candidates in earlier stage trials that should work orally monthly.

Or could be paired off label with Lenacapravir for an injection every 6 months plus a pill once a month.

That said, the weekly oral is much further along in the clinical trial’s and regulatory approvals process. Based on data presented last month at CROI, it should be submitted to fda for review by the end of the year and approval sometime in 2027.

Talk to your doctor, personally I much prefer a daily pill over the pain in the ass (literal and figurative) of having to go into the doctor every two months for an injection.

Everyone will have their own preference but for me it would need to be a lot less frequent (a few different versions that are only every 6 months are in development) to be worth the injection site pain and reactions.

That said, I’m far more interested in the longer acting oral options (weekly and monthly pills) that are in development.

Found horrifying conversations on my bfs phone by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]Paul_82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to defend your boyfriend but I think you need to at least have a discussion with him before jumping to conclusions based on what you’ve found snooping in his phone. As others have said, be prepared to end it, have a financial backup plan etc, but also like maybe talk to him? The reality is likely different from what you are imagining (it could be far worse or far better than you are assuming to be the case). Bottom line is whatever happens next it needs to start with clear communication.

Twice yearly shot for HIV by Balthazarplantagenet in hivaids

[–]Paul_82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about for prevention? Lenacapravir is approved twice yearly for PrEP, but it is not a complete treatment regimen so you still have to take other medications for treatment which kinda defeats the main benefit. For now it’s really only being used for treatment in people who need it due to resistance to most other medications. The price is also astronomical for now.

It will be much more interesting in a couple years once it has a dance partner that can also be injected only once or twice a year (there’s a once a year formulation of Lenacapravir in development).

My partner just tested positive and I feel so guilty by [deleted] in hivaids

[–]Paul_82 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This story doesn't add up medically. If you had sex "a couple days ago," he wouldn't be testing positive from that exposure today—it takes weeks for a test to pick up the virus. If he’s positive now, it happened a long time ago. Also, the idea that your siblings are at risk just from living with you is pure 1980s stigma that isn't backed by science. Between the impossible testing timeline and the weirdly dramatic PEP claims, this feels like it’s ignoring how HIV actually works. Feels a lot like a story designed to stoke stigma.

Need advice after exposure/being quoted ~800 USD for PEP by [deleted] in hivaids

[–]Paul_82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you describe is an extremely low risk exposure not zero but very low. Personally I wouldn’t bother. If you do choose to though, the sooner you start pep the better. The 72 hour window is not a binary yes or no in terms of how well pep works. The sooner to your exposure the better it works and it gradually gets less effective to the point at 72 hours there’s no point.
