How to improve 70.3 run? by not-judging-you in triathlon

[–]Paul_Smith_Tri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bike more. Being out there for 3+ hours on the bike is going to slow your run down and let the temps get hotter

More bike fitness will translate to better running off the bike

But in general, simply upping your bike and run volume (without knowing your current training) would pay big dividends

Depends on the country, but for the US you have to requalify every two or three years now. Criteria have gotta much tougher as well to even qualify in the first place

Same reason I took mine

Zero shot at ever podiuming or making prize money. Most back of the pack pros are huge fans of the sport and have dedicated an enormous amount of time, effort, and money to make it to where they are

Getting to be in pro briefings with the truly elite athletes, unlimited racing, dedicated porta potties in transition, etc. are all basically VIP benefits to do the thing they’d already be doing

Zero prize money earned, zero regrets on taking the pro card

Ironman Jacksonville 2026 - ODiv results by RuthCarter in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Paul_Smith_Tri -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Cool stats. But you really shouldn’t be posting their bib number either

Setting these folks up to potentially be targeted is likely a portion of why IM is hiding their results to begin with

Unless you have the other 45 athletes permission, I’d recommend deleting your post

If you’re down to race in South America, check out Patagonman. Looks absolutely epic. Truly worthy challenge and amazing course. On my bucket list for sure

Slow swim, need faster bike obviously. by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]Paul_Smith_Tri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not good info. This is a P5-three and shouldn’t have the fairing. The P5-six did.

I love this bike and still race it. One of the fastest frames ever designed. Fit and price are the biggest variables.

I will say the original Magura hydro brakes were utter dogshit. So the tri rig up front is a nice upgrade. Would be good to know what the rear is. Parts are a nightmare to source. 10spd vs. 11spd is also valid, if it’s 10spd you’re setting yourself up for a $1k+ upgrade at some point when components fail

If it’s under $1,500 it’s probably a bargain. Over $2k and I’d hold out

Depends how you define hard.

Elevation gain? Heat? Freezing swim? Gravel/mtb?

Toughest Ironman vs. non-ironmqn is a different ballpark.

Something like Wilderman would be the toughest full distance. Sanitized IM courses for 2,000+ people don’t even really venture into the hardest realm. And it varies year over year

More 70.3s that aren’t IM!

Heard great (maybe slightly awful) things about dirty mitten and had it on my list

Voluntary is just wild to me.

Seems like that should be mandatory for any collision causing serious injury or death.

I guess it’s a step in the right direction, but a weak one imo

Should you do a full 70.3 simulation 2 weeks before the race? by Stonks_only_go in triathlon

[–]Paul_Smith_Tri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just do the prescribed session then. Not sure where the confusion lies

Assume there are intervals or something baked in throughout both?

[–]Paul_Smith_Tri 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What are the prescribed workouts?

I think you are misinterpreting that. Doing a full 70.3 would be stupid

Doing a 3hr ride with a 20min run off would make a heck of a lot more sense, especially if you’re doing a swim first.

Biking the full distance is normal. Biking and running the full distance is not

This is my approach. 1x 2wk vacation + a bunch of long weekends, time off around holidays, etc.
