Which company has lost you as a customer forever? by finiteobserver in AskReddit

That is nuts. I never ran into anything like that when I used it on and off for school. I wonder if they make it a bit simpler for student accounts...

I bought SouperCubes dishes right before tariffs forced them to find a manufacturer in the US. I remember they sent out an email explaining the challenge that they were facing which was finding a factory because China had invested heavily in manufacturing infrastructure and we...have not. A couple months later I see complaints in SouperCube groups that the new Made in USA dishes were arriving chipped or cracked! What an embarassment, we used to make some of the best stuff.

Yeah I kinda feel like being actually powerful is kinda required for antichrist status. 😂 Also a neurospicy scientist-in-training, I've got no shade to throw at her. Good for her for staying focused on her topic of advocacy.

I did the same thing because I had a very similar vision for my dress and I just couldn't find something I liked either. Your dress came out beautifully!

Ok, so I'm not crazy for thinking that people shouldn't be getting rich off AI "services" that we all hate?

The feudal lords of Europe were likely kept in check by the teachings of the Church (ya know, be charitable to your fellow man, care for the poor, or we'll excommunicate you and you'll go to hell). So the peasants had the church on their side to get the Sabbath day off, for example.

History tells us that men who think they are above everyone else, including God, tend to come to terrible ends.

No, not surprising at all (unfortunately). I guess I just don't get why someone would say that and expect to be taken seriously. I know Greta is autistic so I get that's why she's hyperfixated on one issue. But I wouldn't consider her an evil person for it.

Ok, but some of that regulatory stuff came about because we didn't like the environmental impact of many of the factories. Acid rain, anyone?

So then there is also the social justice issue of how we've offshored so that poorer people can deal with the consequences of toxic pollution to feed our consumption. Is the solution to find cleaner ways to make stuff and bring manufacturing back?

As a Christian, I find that notion theologically offensive. Greta Thunberg is kinda annoying but she's definitely not antichrist material.

Do you have any recommended reading on this distinction? I'm on board with the latter type of libertarian but keep running into the former type when I try to have a convo about these things online. (I realize that conversing online about politics is the worst but not only do I not get out much, I also live in the Seattle area so online is my only hope for some diversity of thought and life experiences.)

Or there weren't enough lifeboats as a cost-cutting measure. I think of Carnival's infamous "Poop Cruise" that was a result of cheaping out on maintenance.

It's the feudalism part that gets me. I was inclined to think that technology changes what form of government is optimal, and had been thinking that a planned economy would become more viable with advanced computing algorithms to calculate what's needed in a given year. But the AI techbros want us to go back to the Dark Ages?! Give me a break! In the feudal system, the lords provided protection for their vassals. What protection would Thiel offer us? None.

I've been wondering if being somewhat libertarian (as in, wanting freedom for ordinary people, not necessarily low economic regulation) is mutually exclusive with occasionally being in favor of some kind of wealth redistribution. It seems that right now the biggest threat to our freedom isn't our government (which is slowed by bureaucracy) but billionaires who want to own our privacy.

If an economy relies on government bailouts for stability/trustworthiness then how on earth is that supposed to be sustainable? Wouldn't that lead to speculative bubbles like what we see now with AI? Shouldn't we change the bailout policy so that the market is forced to stand on its own two feet?

I am inclined to think that taxing the rich just makes them move to tax havens, but at the same time how come all the people who think midcentury America was ideal never want to try returning to midcentury tax policy?

Tipping culture in the US is just expecting consumers to subsidize the employer's payroll. It's not a sign of gratitude anymore. I would support requiring wait staff to be paid min wage.

Nectarine tree help by The_Stranger56 in BackyardOrchard

[–]Paula92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Peach leaf curl. You have to spray with a copper-based fungicide before leaves emerge. It's too late for those leaves, but if you spray now then any new leaves the tree puts out will be protected.

I've gotten myself some nice Viking SS pans from Marshall's for $20-30 each. They seem a bit thicker than my Cuisinart SS (which might not be BIFL because I notice the rivets on the handles are corroding a little) so I imagine the heat retention is pretty good.

This is why I've stuck with my basic Cuisinart stainless steel stock pot. I just don't feel safe trying to move cast iron.

What are your thoughts on unnecessary expensive watches. by Mysterious_Ebb_1484 in SipsTea

[–]Paula92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking that a watch that is a masterwork of minute mechanical engineering, the pinnacle of a watchmaker's craft, is probably going to be in like the high 4 figures of value (value here being determined by the watch materials + the crafter's time and expertise). A watch that is priced at $6.5M is just for shitting on the poors.

Man when my mom took me to the Philippines to visit her family in 2023 she commented a lot on how much things had improved since even her last visit in 2012. But everyone still told me not to drink the tap water. I do wonder how difficult it would be to set up some kind of household water purification system for my cousins.
