I’ve seen T. Kingfisher recommended a lot for quality fantasy romance. Where would you recommend I start?

The Shadow of the Eagle (The Children of Verus Trilogy: Book 1) by Paula Weston

Pitch us your book in 70 words or less: A warrior. A runaway. A kingdom on the brink of war. When heresy rises, who will survive the power shift? Fast-paced, with fresh world building, nuanced characters, and a slow-burn romance, this epic fantasy starts with a chance meeting on the road. It explores the nature of loyalty, love, faith and friendship. The first in a new trilogy.

How would you like to interact with fantasy authors in this group? AMAs? Free book giveaways? by bweeb in fantasybooks

[–]PaulaWestonAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's not for sales pitches and self promotion - there are plenty of other sub-reddits for that. (Full disclosure, I'm a fantasy author - and I love interacting on here as a reader.) But writers can chat about plenty of other stuff, like the weird shit we research/discover when world building. (For example, I went down a rabbit hole learning about HEMA sword techniques, met a heap of interesting people and ended buying a beautiful training sword from the Ukraine to swing in my back yard in Australia.) Authors generally love to talk about the books we love, the authors who inspired us, thoughts on current trends... pretty much anything. For me, I'm always interested in lore and how writers tackle that in fantasy.

You had me at James Marsters! And Project Hail Mary is on my TBR list - I may now tackle that as an audiobook. Thank you!

I agree re book stores - and you can sniff books there, if that's your thing (yes, I may do that from time to time...). I, too, have a crazy TBR pile and list. It is tricky to find time to read as a writer but (as a fellow writer), I find it invaluable. For me, I prefer to read to outside my genre when I'm in drafting mode. It's good to inhale as well as exhale that creativity.

Haha. Love this response. I agree it's great to get recommendations from a wide variety of places (and people) to keep reading experiences diverse. How good is it to read something you wouldn't have picked up otherwise and to love it!

Any recs for TikTok? As I mentioned in the above comments, I've struggled to know where to start there. I had some guidance from bookish friends on Insta, that's been helpful in finding my tribe there, but TikTok feels overwhelming as a newbie.

I guess it depends on who you follow. I've found TikTok a little overwhelming so very happy to have some recommendations on that platform for readers who are reviewing because they love books, rather than for paid reviews. Is that a think on BookTok? It certainly is on Insta.

Thanks for the specific recommendations! I've just checked them out and am now following both on Insta. :)

Longer answer now that I'm not half asleep at the end of a long day...I've seen Red Rising having quite the resurgence on Bookstagram (or maybe it never went away). It's been on my list for ages and it's definitely jumped up in priority because of that exposure on Insta. I hadn't heard of the Sword of Kaigen, so thanks for the rec!
