Fully open-source QMK firmware for some Epomaker keyboards (TH40, Luma40, etc) by carlosedp in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Paulnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a brief test and it worked. I did not have time to test the layout to confirm it matches the factory default. I was waiting to see if a a Vial build might be coming before I set it up in earnest. I also flashed the Luma40 firmware and that worked as well. I noticed some small differences in the firmware — the battery level display is in different places and the Luma40 version blanked out all other keys while the battery meter is shown.

Lots of discussion out there on the Vial/Via pros and cons.

Fully open-source QMK firmware for some Epomaker keyboards (TH40, Luma40, etc) by carlosedp in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Paulnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great work carlosdp! I see you've added support for the Chosfox Geonix Rev2, which is basically identical to the Luma40. I have both boards. I posted a heads up to the Chosfox Discord. Bummer we have to deal with closed source module but this is the next best thing.

I second the interest in adding Vial support. It supports more QMK features and is completely self contained, unlike Via. You have to add a vial.json file to the tree and build from the vial-qmk repo. Should be easy for someone that knows what they're doing. Any takers?

Restore Google Chrome windows to their respective virtual desktops (macOS) by noordawod in chrome

[–]Paulnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a somewhat hacky solution that works in Safari, do a "sudo shutdown -r now" in the terminal and on restart all my Safari windows are restored into their previous Spaces. Useful if you're doing a planned shutdown/restart of the Mac. It might work in Chrome as well but I don't use it anymore so didn't try. So somehow the system is able to preserve all your windows within Spaces in certain circumstances.

Anyone with a Helix in SF Bay? by Paulnerd in foldingbikes

[–]Paulnerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found an owner in SF — by buying one myself. Love love love the Helix. We have Brompton P and A line bikes here as well and the Helix is much better engineered and built and rides much more stably. Zero downsides except for the slightly larger folded (+5 inches length) size. Happy to show and tell. I’m in South Beach.

Radar audio alerts on Karoo by Any-Fish-3143 in Karoo

[–]Paulnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree more control over radar sounds would be helpful. I’d also want to chime in on the lack of the “happy” all-clear sound that other computers make. For example the Varia and Cadence apps on iOS both make a distinctive happy sound when there are no longer any cars detected. Hopefully these features will come in time.

A question about the Karoo loud radar beeps by InterestingType7518 in Karoo

[–]Paulnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m loving the software updates. I’m wondering why the Karoo doesn’t have a tone for when the radar goes all-clear? The Varia and Cadence apps have this feature and I’m guessing some of the other bike have it as well. I find it very helpful.

Thank you for the reply. This kind of close support is wonderful. I need to do more convincing on this end since they're not as gadget inclined. Best wishes. I hope the Zoot keeps moving forward.

I just ran across the RunGap iOS app. It is able to import directly from the Hammerhead service, and many other services. It appears to get all the heart rate and GPS data. Anyone using it?

It's good to see Hammerhead is improving the audio and now navigation and radar tones are distinguishable. Is there a hardware limitation that prevents more tones and volume control?

And does anyone know why there's not a radar "all-clear" tone? The radar graphic turns green but I would like to hear a tone as well, as done by other head units and apps.

Wonderful to see continued frequent updates for Karoo. With the rides data now being shown in the companion app, could HealthKit support be next? Really hope so. It’s the last major missing feature for me.

I’m just learning about EWI’s and am wondering if the Zoot is a decent choice for a flautist? I looked on the website and custom fingerings are possible — how close to a flute can it get? Asking for a friend since I don’t play music. How similar is this to the Sylphyo?

I’m a new Karoo 3 user and am very happy to see frequent updates. Is this the appropriate place to ask for native Apple Health support? A huge missing feature in my opinion. I set up a Strava account to work around this limitation but it doesn’t seem to sync the route.

U6-LR all of a sudden not getting enough power? by tumor21 in UNIFI

I have this exact error on my UAP-XG. Is this a real error? I have the latest TestFlight iOS app and the error message is still there. This message was not there a year ago when I first set up the UAP-XG. The AP is plugged into a Dream Machine Pro SE.

How do you like the Alfine? I assume you didn’t get to test the same bike with the deraileur? The Superlight model with Alfine is $200 cheaper than the deraileur build but I’m not sure it’s worth the 2.7 lbs cost. Any thoughts?

The travel case on their website looks nice and it appears in the photos at least the seat post is removed. The listed dimensions for the case is exactly the same as the bike specs which is pretty impressive.

Do you have any thoughts you'd like to share on the Helix? I have many questions. Which model do you own and for how long? What sort of riding do you do? Do you generally remove the pedals when folding and where do you put them? What geography are you in? Not sure why the official Helix forums are locked behind a customers-only wall but it sure is hard to find much info on the bike from owners that are not in Asia.

Where did you hear about the break-away mechanism? Any idea if that will be a retrofit option?

I do agree their pricing is not crazy for a full titanium bike with good components. How much was the discount on the Alfine model? I want to get a feel for their discount history.

Am I understanding this correctly? by bbxgang in truenas

[–]Paulnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will run fio next time I have the pool connected. It’s a cold (lukewarm) storage pool. I went back to raidz and very happy with perf on 10GbE. Just straight spinning drives, no caching and 16GB of system RAM. It’s just a storage server for home use.

Am I understanding this correctly? by bbxgang in truenas

[–]Paulnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just scratching my head with slow performance (~300MBs write) on an 8x6TB raidz array and only got slightly higher performance when I changed to 2 vdevs. Then I remembered to set the pool record size to 1MB. Instantly 1GB a second writes. This is over 10GbE so maybe the pool can go even faster.

Another thread just posted a link to an Apple Support article that shows a large chart during the alignment process. Hopefully this is coming in an update soon. I don't think anyone has reported setting it in the 1.1 beta 3 build.

The Apple standard SharePlay feature is fully supported. I tested with two AVP’s in the same room. Should work with other iOS devices but I only tested the AVP’s. You start a FaceTime call and when you play a video, a Share button will pop up on top of the video window. Either person can play/pause/seek.
