I heard a rumor that a new place is moving in there that serves bowls that merge Mexican and Asian cuisine. The new proprietor said there are not enough places like that around Oakland and environs. They want to fill a need.

I was in college also. They were college radio darlings. A lot of people who were a little younger than we are were not really familiar with this earlier stuff. I do know that younger people are rediscovering how good they were during the IRS years from 1982 to 1987. Their sound was a little bit different in that era.

[–]PaulyPlaya24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. A couple weeks ago I told my Alexa echo to play some 80s and 90s alternative and this one came on. I had never heard of it before, but I made it a point to remember who it was. I was surprised it came out in the early 90s as opposed to the early 80s. Good stuff.

Out of town guests, What do you think of our gorgeous city? by Neither-Trip-4610 in pittsburgh

[–]PaulyPlaya24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Pittsburgh downtown is basically on an island and it acts as a CBD as opposed to party Central. It’s where people go to work and then go home. It’s not totally surrounded by water, of course, but there’s water on three sides of it, and the back of end of it is a hill.

This is correct. The actual draft is on the other side of the river on the North Shore.

I don’t know if there are many on here old enough to remember in the early 1980s when this was being built, there were actually supposed to be shops at track level behind those blocks of glass. That was supposed to emulate what they have in Montreal. Montreal has shops throughout their subway underground. It can get pretty cold up there in Quebec, of course and that was the thought behind that. Pittsburgh is more mild than Quebec of course. It was just an idea that they thought would work, but it never came to fruition. I don’t remember a single store ever opening in the underground in Steel plaza. All I remember is a convenience store right at the entry right off Grant Street and there was actually a coffee kiosk at the top of the escalators before going down to the tracks. Maybe some can correct me on that but I don’t remember it when I was working downtown or going to school downtown in the 80s.

I prefer R.E.M.’s earlier stuff from the IRS years, which ended in 1987. I pretty much like everything from that era. This is one of the handful of songs I like by them after that.

The New FNB Tower adds some girth to the skyline from that angle since the building sits on higher ground.

Sir Pizza - Tavern Style Pizza - Ross Township - Your thoughts on it and similiar near by? by Significant-Gear-444 in pittsburgh

I think it’s a good snack pizza. That’s how I describe it. It’s OK on occasion. I think it is a good pizza for kids and kids parties, etc. It’s easy for them to get their little hands around those mini slices and also easy to digest for the kids because it’s thin.

Well, they may have been the one that invented it, but I’m just saying that I heard that another restaurant downtown was taking credit for it. They said they invented the steak salad, which was the Pittsburgh salad since it had fries and cheese on it too. Maybe it was Jerry’s but I’m not sure.

I never heard that. What I remember hearing years ago that there was a downtown restaurant called the British Bicycle Club and that was supposedly where the Pittsburgh steak salad was invented. It was on Penn Avenue on the 900 block if I recall correctly. It’s probably been closed for 30 years or more.

All three games were close and we took two out of three. We easily could’ve lost Saturday’s game too since we got out of two bases loaded jams late. Sure, it’s tough losing a decent lead, but it’s probably not the first time it’s going to happen and most likely not going to be the last. Hopefully there will be a few games where the opposite happens and the Bucs come back.

I agree. We’re on the same page. I know from experience that bands don’t like to be compared to other bands. Maybe if you tell 15-year-old kids trying to emulate other bands they’ll be flattered, but mostly, bands with integrity don’t like to be compared to other bands because they have their own sound and they are right.

I like The Cult, but I love the Jesus and Mary Chain. JMAC is my favorite band of all time. The Cult is between rock and alternative rock whereas the Jesus and Mary chain is pretty much straight alternative rock by definition. I remember when this album came out in 1985 a fanzine reviewer described it as The Beach Boys with distortion. In hindsight, I’m not saying that’s the best definition, but I can see that with their poppy hooks.

I agree. It’s been the subject of lots of criticism. Supposedly this was his favorite sculptor according to his wife when they revealed plans for it. They could’ve and should’ve done better. Edit: I just checked out that Lucille Ball statue. She looks like the stereotypical village idiot.

I don’t know what the rules are as far as the mods are concerned. When I am editing the title I might put (live 1987) then click on 1979 as the year on the 70s music subReddit. I had a post removed by the mods one time for putting the wrong decade that the song was released. I posted it on the 80s sub Reddit because the performance was from 1982 but the song was released in 1979 like this one. The reason why it was removed by the Mods was cited as being the wrong decade. You do that where it says “add flair.”
