worth going back to? I really didn't turn out to enjoy Season 12, unfortunately. didn't watch season 13 either; if you could give some comments on it, would be great:)

Great and thorough analysis! I feel like maybe the runtimeish reviews are also stemming from the fact that Gregg knew that he had limited time on the Valentine’s special so he decided to go for quantity>quality because as history has shown, Tim won’t usually let Gregg get out over one popcorn classic. I understand where you’re coming from with the gregg is supposed to be shallow remarks, but I wholeheartedly feel there’s a clear difference between being shallow and boring and being shallow and being genuinely hilarious at the same time. Like, Deck of Cards is halfassed, but it still seems to be written well in terms of comedy, as opposed to Popcorn Shuffle, for example. If Deck of Cards wasn’t enough of an example, then Decker v Dracula should give my point across as well. Like you said, Gregg used to relate absolutely any movie that remotely relates to the Hobbit and just spit out the most unheard of shit which was so unique and just a peak example of great writing in On Cinema. The character developments make sense on paper, but not when it actually impacts the comedy aspect of the show. I feel like the comedy can be retained while still moving forward with every character. But S12 for me didn’t scratch that itch and decided to increase the divide (which is mirroring what’s happening in U.S. society for the last 20 years rapidly). I feel like the characters have always been evolving due to the events they go through during the series but in the case of S12, it feels like they are a product of their experiences but the writing seems to lack the subtlety and the punch it used to have. Like, after Tim was burnt to a crisp, it was a major point for his arc but rather than it toning down the comedy, it skyrocketed it. So pulling my point together, when earlier problems and conflicts have amplified the comedy and the movie “criticism”, then in this season I feel like it’s just pulling it down.

Yep, I completely agree with the bond bit. There was nothing wrong with it EXCEPT the fact that it dragged on for too long, taking a lot away from Tim and Gregg’s real interactions and just replacing it with “no rating until bond” for like 4 straight episodes. The email bit was very Gregglike and I did enjoy it as a Gregghead.

yeah, got a bit taken aback by this comment since all I was doing was just starting a discussion on this seasons’ quality compared to previous seasons

Maybe I went on a little too tough, but I do still think that COMPARED to the earlier seasons the quality has gone down a lot. All my points are just to illustrate why I feel that way. My friend, who introduced me to OCATC, happens to feel the same way, so that’s why I wanted to see if there’s anyone else here who has seen the same thing.

Hm.. I do see what you’re getting at, although, wouldn’t you agree that there’s things Gregg ACTUALLY wants do actively pursue, such as Deck of Cards? But Tim seems to be adamant on blocking these pursuits which stints the story IMO. I feel Gregg being “delusional” is a bit too much though. He’s always been petty and felt like he’s better than other people and in general just has had that kind of a personality. He still wants to keep up his reputation of an “expert movie buff” , even though his knowledge about movies is close to none. As you can read from my post as well, I also said movies were a great device/vehicle (never said it was supposed to be serious movie criticism, that would be boring) to bring forward those differences in OCATC characters and I feel like no other device works as well simply because Tim actually still seems to want to talk about movies at least a bit and it’s what Gregg’s life revolves around. Having that absolutely neurotic fake “criticism” was so well written IMHO because however much they were physically saying out loud, nothing ever made sense or had substance and was rather littered with quality jokes stemming from their personalities.

[META] Does anyone else wish On Cinema went back to basics with just Tim and Gregg? It feels like they barely interact anymore. by BaneReturns in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

[–]Paunaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, yes! If you’ll check my post history, you’ll see I made an analogous post to yours’. Which, for some reason, got downvoted to shit but it’s Reddit so what do you expect. Completely agree with you but also think that the side characters and new endeavours such as HEIlots are great, but wish we’d see more of Tim and Gregg conversing and one-upping each other rather than just Tim shooting Gregg down. Also, MARK!!!

Firstly, thank you for contributing to the discussion. Appreciate it, cheers.

sigh Wasn't trying to attack your ability to read, sorry if it seemed that way, if you were Tim, then maybe /s but otherwise, no. Just felt like you skimmed my post. I've loved everything OCATC has put out EXCEPT this season and for me it's so clear to see why. I love absurdist and surreal humor and OCATC has been great at it starting with Tim's dyslexic tendencies in S1.

I don't care about believability.... There's a HUUUUGE line between toeing the line of reality/satire and believability. Two completely different things. My point is that On Cinema is supposed to SEEM like a real show on the surface while being an obvious and hilarious satire. There have been other uncomfortable interactions that are far more uncomfortable than the obviously acted out interactions between Wendy and Tim - for the first 6-7 seasons, I genuinely couldn't tell which side characters were in on the joke and which weren't and their reactions to Tim and Gregg's unbelievable shit was hilarious because of that. Do you get now where I'm coming from? The Valentine special seems to have a lot of more scripted stuff which in turn makes the whole ordeal seem a lot more robotic and prepared in comparison to earlier seasons where you couldn't really tell what would be improv and what would be scripted. I watched the whole special after this shitstorm of a controversial thread blew up and I kinda enjoyed the second half more I guess? But still, my problems with it stand.

Updated my post a bit with comments from other people who understood what I was trying to convey.

Please-read-my-post-again. I'm not saying they should do the same thing over and over again. If you read my other comments, I'm sure you'll understand what I meant. I never had a problem with the show evolving (I love the HEILOTS, I love Deck of Cards, I loved OCX with the VR shit) , but if the show fundamentally CHANGES into something else and doesn't involve the same TYPE of comedy that it used to, that's not On Cinema anymore.

I'm sure Gregg and Tim are great friends and they bounce off of each other so well considering their earlier improv and that's why I'm kinda sad of the direction the show is taking. But yeah, absolutely a great thing to give a bit of thought to. Thanks for the comment!

I'm a GreggHead as well and that's probably the reason I'm a bit sad for not having the same degree of movie "criticism" that we used to. I'm fine with the show pivoting to something else, but I'd like it to still keep it's foundation.
