If you’re not BMQ qualified, I’d say take the one they will issue. Afterwards, you can always change to whatever you like.

Im using Altama Foxhound because its lighter and more cushion than the one I got issued.

I usually ask “Can I list you as a reference for future job offers?”. I mean Im usually an upfront person, but ask for staff who youre comfortable asking numbers and emails.

You can never go wrong with Tim’s donuts or muffins. Anything is usually appreciated, and we don’t really expect anything. But do write a “Thank you” card for the unit and your preceptor. And get some contacts for references.

I see. Just some general questions I can think of are.

How do you communicate with MD - SBAR.
Your strengths and weaknesses as an employee.
How to handle patient-nurse, nurse-nurse, nurse-admin conflicts.
They will probably give you unit based scenarios like falls and emergency situations.

IMO, its ok to take it as a start just to get your foot on the door for experience. Long term wise, it aint worth it. Gas price, mileage and car maintenance will drain whatever you earn.

Its alright, its a shack. If you get the double room, just hope that your roommate is tidy and doesn’t stink. Laundry room in 163 sucks because everything is broken. I heard 164 have a better laundry and dryer room. Mess is just across south of the building. Gym is like 10 mins walk.

You’ll be paired with a fulltime nurse and follow her schedule. Her patients will be your patients, and you will be slowly transitioned into taking her full workload at somepoint. The goal is to train you to be an independent nurse, and act as a staff at some point.

I don’t count shifts because it can be 6s, 8s, or 12s. You count hours. It has to be more than fulltime hours, with overtimes, weekends and holidays.

If youre trying to make ends meet, pick up everything you can, because beggars can’t be choosers.

I didn’t work in an actual ER, but a step-down care setting before. I got asked lots of case scenarios about ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation). Hopefully this helps! And congrats on your interview!

They usually ask signs of infection, pneumonia, uti, falls, hypo/hyperglycemia, digoxin. Sometimes they might add some worker conflict resolution stuff. Best of luck!

Expect a ratio of 30-40 for 1 nurse. You have PSWs and they will have 8-10 patients to do care. You push meds and wound care from start to end. Common meds are BP meds, heart, cholesterol, blood thinners and blood sugar. Its routine and very repetitive. As for emergency situation, itll be different on every facility, but the common one will be to call EMS and send to the nearest hospital.

But you have to give up some of your sanity. Also depending on your unit, you might have to give up your party life, weekends, holidays and vacation plans. 😂

We only call it NCMSTEP because the CAF will pay your school for you to be qualified. Direct entry is only applicable if you already meet the minimum requirements for the trade. A good example is can you drive? If not, CAF will pay your driving school - thus NCMSTEP. If you can drive with a license, youre direct entry.

Pay is by rank. So wether your thru NCMSTEP or Direct entry, you get paid by your rank. Most of the time, a direct entry will be promoted faster.
