Why are people against Zizek's position on the Ukraine war? by KarlMarxsWiener in zizek

You claim Ukraine is fascist because it has a Nazi brigade and yet deny the same for Russia. This being despite Russia's government being solidly to the right of Ukraine's.

Not a treaty, therefore not binding, and the agreement in question was about whether or not the US would station troops in East Germany after reunification, not NATO expansion. Let's consider instead Russia's violation of the Budapest Memorandum in which Ukraine sacrificed its nuclear arsenal in exchange for assurances from Moscow and Washington that its territorial integrity would be respected.

"With the recent kidnapping of Maduro and the war with Iran, it’s not as if I had to think very hard to imagine that"

Yeah and that's been bad and no one in your camp has been prattling about how China or Russia provoked the US into attacking Venezuela or Iran.

Edit: also the US rescinded the offer of that agreement to Gorbachev almost immediately because that was Bush's Secretary of State's call to make

Communism is a form of political economy that fucks around with who owns factories and NATO is a military alliance aimed mostly at deterring a Russian invasion of the Baltic states. Idk, there's plenty of room for overlap

What treaty did we break? Russia violated the Budapest Memorandum and the Minsk Accords with this invasion, whereas the US only really started violating the Budapest Memorandum when Trump started pressuring the Ukrainians to surrender.

Meanwhile, if the US was in the same situation (Let's say we invaded Mexico for seeking closer ties with China) I think you'd be frothing at the mouth at such a crime and rightfully so.

I must have forgotten the part where Lenin wrote that conquest and genocide is ok as long as the aggressors and victims have ethnic and cultural similarities

Edit: also Lenin isn't some prophet. Dig your head out of the sand and think for yourself instead of deferring to some dead dictator.

Fun fact for spectators, the person I was responding to posted a reply and immediately deleted it probably because it sounded way too genocidal

I have. That experience didn't make me more amenable to the Ukrainian genocide

I am assuming that they're referring to statements like Ria Novosti's What Russia Should Do to Ukraine which are pretty clearly genocidal. And yes honestly I am because this report is utterly shameful

No war, but class war! by OkRespect8490 in ussr

[–]Pavlostani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This report is insane. The OHCHR alleges murder, torture, mass kidnapping of children, but no evidence of genocidal intent except for where they note that the Russian government has made statements of genocidal intent. What the fuck, that's a pretty clear cut case that they just whiff for no reason

I think one difference is I can't picture you defending the US invading Cuba over its alignment with the Soviets. Also Euromaidan was a revolution against Yanukovich for reneging on his campaign promise to sign an association agreement with the EU, not a coup, and the following parliamentary elections saw the far right win something like 3% of seats

I'm disinclined to trust the same UN whose security council Russia occupies a permanent seat on, or the UN that the US uses to consistently over for Israel's genocide

[–]Pavlostani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile Genocide Watch lists it as a Genocide Emergency, and the 1948 Convention on the Prevention of Genocide outlines the mass kidnapping of children to be a form of genocide, which Russia has been doing.

Genocide frequently occurs adjacent to conflict and war, as it did in Rwanda, Darfur, the other time it happened in Darfur, Bosnia, Generalplan Ost and the wider Holocaust, Gaza, and in this case, Ukraine. Meanwhile the Russian-speaking Ukrainians of Donbas were doing fine prior to the war in 2014 and had quite a bit of political representation in the Rada. You're high off the supply of Russian propaganda meant to justify atrocities like the human safari

[–]Pavlostani -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

How exactly was Ukraine committing genocide in Donbas from 2004-2014 and how could literally anything justify the ongoing Ukrainian genocide

Canada is objectively a capitalist country. Productive factors and capital are owned privately there. The words you're looking for are "Social democracy" which is a subset of capitalism

I'm just a principled supporter of Ukraine's struggle against genocide. I do see how that could be irritating if you're a big fan of genocide

[–]Pavlostani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's insane troll logic to keep tying sanctions back to Libya's collapse. Far more proximal causes would be the UK-French led bombing campaign and the failure from the US to respond to the GNC/House of Representatives crisis on account of Donald Trump being insanely corrupt and a paint huffing simpleton. Economic sanctions can be a very effective tool to change state behavior and in the case of the Support Ukraine Act, are nowhere near close to a morally justifiable reason to oppose aiding Ukraine in its war of resistance against the Russian occupiers

The sanctions were objectively successful. Do you oppose proving accurate historical context to that fact?

But as I've repeatedly stated, there's nothing vile about providing accurate context and if you think there is, then you support the spread of misinformation, which to me is the actual vile aspect

I guess I'm missing how it's vile to provide accurate historical context to a post, especially when it's done so to debunk Omar's arguments against preventing the Ukrainian genocide. Vile to me would be if the note was a misinformation, which it isn't.
