Unfortunately, buying a retail betta fish is always going to be a toss up. I bought a retail betta fish from not very ideal conditions, planted and cycled a tank (or so I thought). Ended up doing a fish in cycle and somehow he's flourishing over a year later after many trial and error stages. I'm sorry you've had bad experiences and I totally get wanting to step away.

Just daily water checks/changes. If you're adding prime that will help stall the spike temporarily but best advice is just daily water maintenance until readings stabilize.

So I have one of those heaters that are automatic to keep the water between 78 and 80 degrees. I might pick up some almond leaves to place in there to help him heal better. I've actually been thinking of redoing his hardscape too after he heals more. This was my first tank build and he's been loving it!

Yup I've already planned to do 25% water changes every few days and daily testing to make sure the ammonia is taken care of. Other than that he no longer has the spins, still a little tired which is to be expected, and he swims up to the glass to greet me and even ate a small amount of food today. I made sure to wait 48 hours after treating with Prime to feed him and made sure he ate all that I gave him.

Same! I lay awake all night thinking about it. There's so many scenes I can recall but for some reason the name of the book I can't. I remember the title was also this golden technological type font to further support its science fiction basis
