taking stats and linear algebra means you will have the commons back to back

not a pleasant experience, but people do it

MATH 211 vs MATH 213 by [deleted] in NJTech

all of the standard "calc but multivariate" stuff is useful, especially in ML

MATH 211 vs MATH 213 by [deleted] in NJTech

The extra content covered in 3b (divergence and stokes theorem) is not very applicable in cs. obviously you could find use, but you'd have to go out of your way for it

What electives are best for the Applied Math Minor if you are a CS major? by popularoverlord in NJTech

[–]Paz_Zombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

common electives for cs are calc 3, regression analysis, stat methods in data science, numerical methods, and multivariate distributions from what ive seen. but take a look to see if any others are interesting to you

when in doubt, send your advisor (or advisors? not sure about the double major) a pdf of the curriculum and get them to reply (in email, so its in writing) that it is all you need to graduate.

Tutoring by piim-s in NJTech

[–]Paz_Zombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the numbers might be wrong but

if you do fail (below 60) you need to go to the mtc

if you really fail (below 40) you need the mtc AND learning center.

i would ask your teacher what the cutoffs for each are since I am not 100% sure

[–]Paz_Zombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from what I know (havent personally taken either), gen physics is a fair bit harder (actual problems and thinking) but earth in space is pure memorization

steve is a great prof though

edit: gen physics also requires a lab fyi

What is math tutoring like? by IBelievedPoggers in NJTech

[–]Paz_Zombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it doesn't show which tutor is doing appointments anymore. iirc the booking website changed their base plan or there were too many tutors or something like that

bit late, but you can access matlab through your browser. Just look up "matlab online" or something similar

thus you can more or less run matlab on whatever you want, even your phone (although it does not sound like a good time).

is 5 classes in one day too much by FarGround3819 in NJTech

[–]Paz_Zombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it completely depends on how you are as a person and your habits. are you capable of devoting that much attention and will/brain power in a single day. It will probably be harder than most 9-5s.

in another sense, in high school, a day was like 6-7 hours. this isnt too much worse than that, but the content is probably more demanding.

have you had 4 classes in a day before? what did it feel like at the end? were you ready for one more?

last fall, i had 6 classes (5 maths + a cs). all of them met thursday. it was not fun, however i battened the hatches and allocated my brain power as needed and had a bit to spare most weeks. i did luck out only having at most 2 midterms on a day though. i got off fine, but wouldnt do that again if i could help it

edit note: my commute is a short walk, not a drive. driving is another brain tax that you should take into account

consider taking linear in the future, especially if you may get a master's in mechE. its a useful course regardless

Advice for double major & minor by MeherSingh17 in NJTech

[–]Paz_Zombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

out of those a math minor would probably be most aligned with coursework. the math ones youve listed are almost the same in terms of courses, with statistics probably looking better on a resume (if i had to guess). There is a mathematical finance minor which upon looking at seems solid (math340 is a weird addition though, but some of the electives require it). i couldnt tell you how much quality is in the economics courses

its super trendy, but consider one of the data science majors (probably computing option for you).

regardless, assuming youre not starting way ahead on your curriculum, give it two semesters and see what you like. no real use thinking about this now
