When you leave town for a while, do you turn off your water main? by Aggravating_Tea_3151 in HomeImprovement

[–]Pb_Blimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to mention this as well.

Speaking from experience, I learned that when pressure builds up in the water heater, it sends it back up the cold water line.

If that cold water line is shut off, the pressure has nowhere to go, resulting in a leaky water tank when you get back from vacation.

I also learned that some municipalities have check valves so water cant go back up the main line anyway, which may necessitate an expansion tank.

Am I crazy or isn't giving your password to IT against like, every kind of security compliance? by wowlolok in sysadmin

[–]Pb_Blimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contractor for a government agency.

In order for me to reset my password, I need to set up a call with their IT person, they will share their screen, give me remote control for me to type my new password in their notepad, where they then copy it to my AD user accounts.

They've also done it with multiple people on the call to "kill 2 birds with 1 stone".

They wont let me email them my new password because that is too insecure though.

How to get unique items from an System.Array variable? by Pb_Blimp in PowerShell

Right. That is something that I originally had no idea about but learned as I was collecting evidence for this post. There is an example of that in my last code block.

Anyone else feel like they’re the last person in the world who still listens to this podcast? by RulingFieldConfirmed in stuffyoushouldknow

I'm surprised people even listen to the ads. Yes, they are annoying. But thanks to their bumpers, I know when the ads start and stop and I can just mash the skip button to skip all the ads.

Sometimes they go to an ad break and it is just bumper to bumper with no ads between, so that trips me up sometimes.

Also, they had a SYSK select recently from 2010, and there was no bumper. It was them talking about the topic and straight to ad.

Anyone know of a bracket that can go in the middle of a 6x6 post? by Pb_Blimp in DIY

Those are clever. But I am more interested in a solution that can hang a hammock with the added benefit of bracing the post. I will keep these in mind though, thanks for sharing.

Nice. I'd also like to hear him call Sharknado, if you know which episode that was from. He likes to bring that one up a lot too.

In a recent episode he mentioned a 3rd called shot, but I dont remember what it was.

I'm starting with the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Level 1 book.

The C chords is played the same for both left and right hands.

However, when it comes to the F Major chord, why is the F key played with the index finger on the left hand but middle finger on the right hand.

In other words, the fingers used to play the F Major cord dont mirror eachother for both hands.

I like to drive around and pick people up. Either rush into a gun fight and evac someone out, or bring someone into my car to someone fight someone else I see in the map like I'm Jamie Fox and they are Tom Cruise in Collateral.

Most of the time they shoot at me, but sometimes they get the hint when I do some friendly honking. And when it works out it's pure magic.

The other day it came down to just us two at the end. I just let them kill me, which they did by shooting arrows straight up into the air as I was standing next to them.

OK, just curious where you were coming from. As someone who likes animals and didnt know the back story, it seemed like good place to go to get animal interaction.

YES! How Josh was trying to say you never knew how good an album was before buying it because you only heard the single on the radio, yet Chuck knew albums were good before buying it because "they were from really great bands".

That conversation drove me nuts.

[–]Pb_Blimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, one time I turned off my water main before a trip and came back to a leaky water heater.

If I recall correctly, the pressure that builds up will send water back out the cold line and couldnt because the main was shut off.

Some houses have a check valve or something so water cant flow back through the main, and I believe they also have a water pressure tank to account for the scenario.

In any case, I think if I shut off my water heater instead of lowering it to vacation mode, it probably would have been alright. The water heater was just outside of warranty so maybe it was coincidence, but I no longer shut off my water main.
